"Piplup, dazzling entrance!"
Dawn's voice, though slightly tight with nerves, carried across the arena. She flicked her wrist, releasing a Capsule Ball adorned with bubble stickers. Piplup emerged in a burst of iridescent blue spheres that mirrored the shimmering lights of the hall.
"Bubble Beam!"
The penguin Pokémon unleashed a torrent of sapphire bubbles, blowing them upward to mingle with the sticker's effects. As they began to descend like a slow-motion rain, Dawn signaled the finisher. "Piplup, Peck!"
This wasn't the standard move. Under Ash's veteran guidance during their journey, Piplup had practiced focusing its kinetic energy. Its beak glowed with a white light, nearly doubling in size as it dove through the air. With surgical precision, Piplup weaved through the falling bubbles, popping each one with a sharp clack. The resulting colorful sparkles showered the stage as Dawn and Piplup bowed in perfect synchronization.
The applause was thunderous. For a rookie coordinator, it was a masterful display of highlighting a Pokémon's growth.
The First Round Judging soon concluded. In the Contestant Lounge, the atmosphere was stifling as everyone stared at the massive digital monitor. Out of dozens of performers, only eight names would flicker into existence.
One by one, the slots filled. Zoey. Jessilina. Ash. And finally—Dawn.
"We did it!" Dawn cheered, hugging Piplup. Ash gave her a thumbs-up, but his mind was already shifting to the Second Round: the Performance Battle. Unlike a standard gym match, this was a duel of points where flair was as important as damage.
Ash's first draw was none other than Jessilina.
"It's the little brat! Perfect," Musashi hissed as they stepped onto the stage. Through her thick glasses and disguise, her eyes burned with the frustration of a hundred failed heists. "I'll show you what a real performer looks like! Go, Carnivine!"
She sent out the massive Venus flytrap Pokémon. It immediately lunged at Jessie, biting her head in a display of "affection" that would have hospitalized a normal human. Ash didn't blink.
"Aipom, center stage!"
Aipom landed on the tail-hand, her face set in a determined grin.
"Carnivine, Seed Machine Gun!"
A barrage of glowing green seeds tore through the air. Ash countered instantly. "Swift!"
The golden stars intercepted the seeds mid-air, creating a series of sparkling detonations that chipped away at Jessie's point bar. Aipom didn't wait; she charged through the smoke, her body spinning like a top.
"Focus Punch!"
The tail-hand, glowing with white-hot energy, slammed into Carnivine's forehead. The impact was heavy, but the flytrap was resilient.
"Endure it! Use Bind!" Jessie screamed.
Carnivine's vines whipped out, ensnaring Aipom before she could retreat. The flytrap opened its hideous maw, ready to deliver a crushing Bite.
"Aipom, stay calm! Use Tickle!" Ash commanded.
It was an unconventional choice. Aipom's hands and tail began to franticly scratch at Carnivine's sensitive vines and stem. The effect was immediate. Carnivine's terrifying expression broke into a fit of uncontrollable, high-pitched laughter. Its grip loosened, and its Attack and Defense stats plummeted as it doubled over in a giggling fit.
"Focus Punch, once more!"
Aipom landed a second, even more devastating blow on the laughing Pokémon, driving it into the floor. She followed up with a spiraling Swift for the finish. As Carnivine's eyes turned to spirals, the buzzer rang. Ash was moving to the semi-finals.
On the other side of the bracket, Dawn had successfully navigated her first match using Buneary's speed. But the "script" of the tournament had saved its hardest challenge for last. Her semi-final opponent was Zoey.
"Dawn, Zoey is a veteran," Ash said, catching her in the tunnel. He didn't sugarcoat it. "She's polished. You'll need to use everything we practiced."
"I know," Dawn said. She didn't say her usual "no problem." Her eyes were fixed on the stage, reflecting a new, quiet intensity. "But I'm not going down without a fight."
The match was a brutal lesson in high-level coordination. Dawn's Buneary was agile, using Ice Beam to create frozen terrain and Dizzy Punch to try and scramble the opponent's senses. But Zoey's Glameow was a master of redirection.
Every time Buneary attacked, Glameow used its spring-like tail to parry and counter with Shadow Claw or Iron Tail. Zoey played the point bar like an instrument, draining Dawn's score by turning her own attacks against her. When the timer hit zero, the scoreboard told the story: Zoey had won by a landslide.
Dawn stood on the stage, her chest heaving, looking at her fallen Buneary. The "Rookie's Wall" had been hit, and it was as tall as a mountain.
