For a brief moment, no one spoke. Neither the Virelli nor Kairos, whose gaze remained fixed on my face as his grip tightened around my wrist.
I swallowed, wincing slightly. "You're hurting me," I whispered.
But Kairos didn't let go. He wasn't even listening. His attention had already shifted, his eyes moving from my face to Matteo and the men standing beside him, all of whom stared back in stunned disbelief.
"And who the hell are you?!" Matteo growled, arrogance lacing his words as he pulled out his gun and aimed it directly at Kairos. "How dare you shoot at me? Me, Matteo Virelli?!"
Oh God.
My heart began to pound violently against my chest as more men stepped out from the shadows at the sound of his voice, emerging into the dim light like they had been waiting for this exact moment.
They wore the same suits, the same berets, only bulkier, more intimidating.
One by one, they drew their guns, cocking them and pointing them at Kairos… and me.
