Chapter 32 - Chapter 8 — The Keeper's Burden

The blue light faded slowly.

Silence settled over the archive room.

Dean still held the Covenant Blade.

Its glow had disappeared, but the ancient symbols engraved along the blade remained visible, pulsing faintly like a heartbeat.

No one moved.

Not even the Watchers.

Asterion slowly rose to his feet.

His sword of celestial fire vanished into countless particles of white light.

He looked at Dean with a mixture of respect... and concern.

"It has been thousands of years."

Dean looked at the blade.

Then back at Asterion.

"Mind explaining what just happened?"

Asterion nodded.

"The Covenant Blade cannot be claimed."

He paused.

"It chooses."

Ben folded his arms.

"Yeah, we've established Dean has terrible luck."

Dean smirked.

"Tell me something I don't know."

Even Malach couldn't suppress a faint smile.

Asterion walked toward one of the ancient maps hanging on the archive wall.

With a wave of his hand, the paper transformed into a living image.

A map of the world.

Seven points began glowing with blue light.

Dean stepped closer.

"The chains?"

Asterion nodded.

"The Seven Celestial Chains."

One point suddenly faded.

The church.

Destroyed.

The first chain.

Broken.

Six remained.

Ben stared at the map.

"If all of them break..."

Asterion answered before he finished.

"The First Gate opens."

Dean frowned.

"And what's behind it?"

The room became unnaturally quiet.

Even the emergency alarms had stopped.

Asterion spoke carefully.

"Not Hell."

Another pause.

"Not Heaven."

His eyes met Dean's.

"Something older than both."

Dean looked down at the Covenant Blade.

"Then why me?"

Asterion's expression softened.

"Because the Keepers cannot choose their successor."

He looked directly into Dean's eyes.

"Only the Blade can."

Dean sighed.

"Great."

He slid the sword into the leather scabbard hanging beside the display case.

The moment the blade disappeared inside...

The bunker lights flickered back on.

Ben blinked.

"...Well that's convenient."

Suddenly—

Every computer terminal inside the archive powered on by itself.

Monitors flashed to life.

Old servers began humming.

One screen displayed a single incoming transmission.

UNKNOWN SOURCE.

Dean exchanged a glance with Ben.

"Didn't we already do the creepy phone call thing?"

Ben shrugged.

"Apparently we're upgrading."

Dean pressed the accept button.

Static filled the room.

Then the image stabilized.

A man appeared on the screen.

White hair.

Blue eyes.

A calm smile.

Dean immediately recognized him from the old photographs hidden throughout the bunker.

Sam Winchester.

Not a recording.

Not exactly.

The image looked... aware.

Sam looked directly into the camera.

Directly at Dean.

"If you're seeing this..."

He smiled sadly.

"...then I was right."

Dean took a slow step closer.

The room was completely silent.

Sam continued.

"The Blade chose you."

Ben's eyes widened.

"He knew?"

Sam nodded gently, as if he had heard the question.

"Your father and I always feared this day would come."

Dean's heart pounded.

He had dreamed of hearing his father's stories.

Now he was hearing Sam's own voice.

"Listen carefully."

Sam's expression became serious.

"The Watchers are not your enemies."

Asterion lowered his head respectfully.

Sam continued.

"But the one hunting them is."

The image suddenly flickered.

Heavy interference crossed the screen.

A deep growl echoed through the speakers.

Sam looked behind him.

For the first time...

Fear crossed his face.

"He's already found me..."

The lights inside the bunker flickered violently.

The transmission became unstable.

Dean stepped forward.

"Sam!"

Sam looked back toward the camera one final time.

"Dean..."

A faint smile appeared.

"Whatever happens..."

The image began breaking apart.

"...never let him open the Seventh Chain."

The screen turned black.

At that exact moment—

The bunker shook violently.

A distant explosion echoed from somewhere above.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

One of the security monitors automatically switched to an exterior camera.

The farmhouse above the bunker...

Was burning.

Ben stared at the screen.

"...We've got company."

Dean looked toward the emergency exit.

Then tightened his grip on the Covenant Blade.

The blue symbols lit up once more.

Asterion calmly drew his celestial sword again.

This time...

Not against Dean.

Beside him.

He looked at the young Winchester and spoke with absolute certainty.

"Keeper..."

He pointed toward the burning staircase leading to the surface.

"...it's time to defend your Gate."
