The fog rolled silently across the empty highway.
It swallowed the road.
The fields.
Even the stars.
Only the two Impalas remained visible beneath the pale moonlight.
The older Dean Winchester stepped in front of his nephew.
His expression had completely changed.
No more jokes.
No more smiles.
Only the calm determination of a hunter who had faced the impossible his entire life.
The blue eyes in the fog drew closer.
Not walking.
Gliding.
Watching.
The older Dean spoke quietly.
"Remember one thing."
The younger Dean listened.
"Every monster wants you to believe fear makes you weak."
He glanced toward the fog.
"They're wrong."
Dean tightened his grip around the Covenant Blade.
"Then what makes us strong?"
The older Dean smiled.
A genuine Winchester smile.
"The people we'd die for."
The words echoed in Dean's mind.
His father.
Sam.
Ben.
Bobby.
Everyone who had sacrificed something so that others could live.
The fog suddenly erupted.
A massive creature emerged from the darkness.
It wasn't made of flesh.
Or smoke.
Its body was formed entirely of broken chains wrapped around a shadow that had no shape.
Its burning blue eyes locked onto Dean.
The creature spoke with a voice that shook the highway itself.
"Keeper..."
The older Dean sighed.
"Man, they really need new material."
The younger Dean laughed despite the danger.
The creature roared.
The entire road cracked beneath its weight.
Dean raised the Covenant Blade.
Its blue light burst to life.
The chains around the creature recoiled.
Almost afraid.
The older Dean noticed.
"See?"
He pointed at the Blade.
"It knows you're stronger than you think."
The creature attacked.
Chains shot through the air like giant spears.
Dean rolled beneath the first strike.
He swung the Covenant Blade.
The glowing edge sliced through one of the chains effortlessly.
The creature screamed.
Not in pain.
In surprise.
The older Dean watched proudly.
"Nice."
Another chain whipped toward Dean.
He blocked it with the Blade.
The impact nearly knocked him to the ground.
The older Dean remained where he was.
Watching.
Not helping.
Dean looked at him.
"You gonna jump in?"
The older hunter folded his arms.
"Nope."
Dean blinked.
"Seriously?"
He ducked another attack.
The older Dean shrugged.
"My test's over."
He smiled.
"This one's yours."
The creature lunged again.
Dean planted his feet.
Instead of retreating—
He charged.
The Covenant Blade blazed brighter than ever before.
Dean leapt.
With a powerful swing—
He cut straight through the creature's chest.
A burst of blue light exploded across the highway.
The chains shattered into thousands of glowing fragments.
The creature let out one final roar before dissolving into nothingness.
Silence returned.
The fog slowly faded.
The moonlight returned.
The older Dean walked toward his nephew.
A smile of pride crossed his face.
"Not bad."
Dean laughed softly.
"Coming from you..."
He looked at the Blade.
"...I'll take that as a compliment."
The older Dean nodded.
Then his smile slowly faded.
He looked toward the Impala.
His beloved Baby.
He gently rested a hand on the hood.
"Take care of her."
Dean smiled.
"I will."
The older Dean looked back at his nephew one last time.
"And one more thing."
Dean waited.
The legendary hunter grinned.
"Family doesn't end in blood."
Dean froze.
He recognized the phrase.
His father had said it countless times.
Ben had repeated it on hunts.
Now he knew where it truly came from.
The older Dean stepped backward toward the fog.
His form slowly began to fade.
"Tell Ben..."
He laughed softly.
"...he still owes me a windshield."
Dean burst out laughing.
"I'll make sure he hears that."
The older Dean gave a final wink.
Then disappeared into the light.
Dean opened his eyes.
He was back in the bunker.
The Covenant Blade rested firmly in his hand.
Ben was kneeling beside him.
"Dean!"
Dean looked around.
The Gate.
The chains.
Malach.
Asterion.
Everything was exactly where he had left it.
Only a few seconds had passed.
Ben helped him to his feet.
"What happened?"
Dean looked down at the Blade.
Then smiled.
A calm.
Confident.
Winchester smile.
"I met family."
Before Ben could ask another question—
One of the six remaining celestial chains cracked.
A sound unlike anything they had ever heard echoed through the bunker.
CRACK.
Everyone looked toward the abyss.
Asterion's face turned white.
Malach whispered:
"The Sixth Chain..."
A pulse of darkness erupted from below.
And for the first time...
Something began climbing toward them.
