Chapter 17 - Wolf In The Kennel

It would not stop howling. The wolf we kept in the kennels had been at it for hours now, and I rose from my bed, irritated. The thing sounded like a sobbing widow with the way it refused to allow us any peace or quiet.

I unwrapped another piece of chocolate, eating it in one bite. It never tasted like much of anything to me, not sweet but just slightly bitter, but it always soothed my hungry soul.

If I had one…

There was something painfully familiar about the crinkle of the wrapper and the earthiness that coated my tongue. Like a memory I couldn't quite grasp, hovering just beyond reach. I'd been eating chocolate since I could remember—hoarding it, actually. Karn insisted I keep stashes hidden throughout the estate, in every room, every drawer. The need to possess it, to always have more, was bone-deep.

But I never knew why.
