I unlocked the cage and the wolf limped out immediately, its broken leg splinted but still causing it pain. It looked up at me like it was waiting for permission, and I found myself jerking my head toward the dungeon corridor.


I grabbed some bread and cheese from the kitchens on the way back, my hands moving on autopilot while my mind screamed at me to stop, to turn around, to go back to bed and forget this ever happened.


When I returned to the dungeon, the wolf was already there, having somehow made its way down faster than I had despite its injury. It stood at Aurora's feet, whining softly, its tail wagging in desperate, frantic sweeps.


Aurora's eyes went wide when she saw it, shock and disbelief written across her face in equal measure. Then her expression crumpled, and she tried to reach for the wolf but the chains held her wrists too high.
