The descent into the Deep Roads swallowed the light.
Lucifer led the way down the massive, spiraling stone ramp. The air grew stale and heavy, thick with the smell of damp earth and old sulfur. Faint blue moss clung to the cavern walls, casting long, unnatural shadows. Behind him, the one hundred Cryo-Vanguards marched in perfect, silent unison. Their boots hit the stone without a single echo. The passive frost magic radiating from their ice-crystal armor dropped the tunnel's temperature below freezing.

[Zone Level: 25-40]
[Warning: High density of hostile lifeforms detected.]
Lucifer dismissed the prompt. He unhooked the Carnage Core from his belt. The cursed artifact looked like a jagged, fist-sized chunk of black glass. It rested cold and dormant in his palm.
"The tunnel widens ahead," Elara said softly. She walked at his right shoulder. Her golden eyes pierced the gloom.
As a celestial being, the darkness offered no cover against her sight. "I see artificial structures. Walls made of scrap metal and bone. A settlement."
"The Deep Gnome Capital," Lucifer confirmed. He did not slow his pace. "It blocks the only route to the Cult of Decay's stronghold."
They turned a massive bend in the tunnel. The cavern opened up into a sprawling underground vault. A crude, jagged city filled the space.
Rusting iron towers bolted into the stalactites hung over a maze of stone hovels. A massive wall of spiked metal plates and sharpened logs stretched across the entire width of the cavern, entirely blocking the Deep Roads.
Hundreds of gray-skinned figures moved along the top of the barricade. They had bulbous yellow eyes, wide, bat-like ears, and mouths full of needle-sharp teeth. They carried rusted crossbows and jagged iron spears.
A heavy iron gate in the center of the wall groaned open.
A Deep Gnome riding a massive, blind cave lizard trotted out. The lizard hissed, its forked tongue tasting the freezing air.
The Gnome rider wore armor made from hardened leather and human ribs. He carried a long pole with a severed, rotting head tied to the top.
Lucifer stopped. He raised a hand. The Cryo-Vanguards halted instantly, raising their heavy sniper rifles to their shoulders.
The Gnome rider halted fifty yards away. He spat a wad of black phlegm onto the stone floor.
"Surface meat!" the Gnome shouted. His voice was a harsh, scraping rasp that echoed through the cavern. He spoke a broken, guttural version of the human tongue. "You walk the Deep King's road! Pay the toll!"
Lucifer stared at the creature. He said nothing.
The Gnome banged his spear against the lizard's thick scales. "Gold is no good! The Deep King demands soft meat! Give us ten of your tall slaves, and you pass! Refuse, and we take you all for the breeding pits!"
On top of the wall, hundreds of crossbows raised. The grating sound of tightening winches filled the cavern.
Behind the walls, thousands more Gnomes began to shriek and bang their weapons against rusted metal, creating a deafening, chaotic war drum.
Elara stepped forward. Her grip tightened on her silver spear. "They demand human sacrifices. Lucifer, let me strike the rider."
Lucifer looked at the sprawling city. He looked at the tens of thousands of hostiles swarming the walls and the towers. He looked down at the dormant Carnage Core in his hand.
[Ding!]
[Item: Carnage Core (Cursed)]
[Charge: 0 / 100,000]
[Effect: Absorbs death energy to grant True Damage and massive stat amplification. Requires total slaughter to awaken.]
Lucifer closed his hand around the black glass. It began to pulse with a faint, greedy crimson light.
"No parley," Lucifer ordered. His voice was cold, carrying clearly over the Gnomes' war drums. He turned to the Cryo-Vanguard Captain. "Total purge. Leave nothing alive."
Elara's eyes widened. She grabbed his arm. "A total purge? Lucifer, there are thousands of them. An entire city. Many are just defending their gates. We can break their line and march through. We do not need to massacre them all."
"They are in my way," Lucifer said. He pulled his arm from her grasp. "And I need the souls."
Lucifer activated the Zephyr's Grace Emblem.
A surge of god-like speed ripped through his veins. The world slowed to an agonizing crawl. The Gnome rider's mouth was still open, halfway through a laugh. The crossbow bolts leaving the wall hung suspended in mid-air.
Lucifer vanished.
He moved faster than the eye could track. He bypassed the lizard rider entirely. He ran straight up the vertical face of the scrap-metal wall.
He crested the top, weaving between the frozen crossbow bolts, and dropped down into the city behind the barricade.
He deactivated the emblem. Time slammed back to normal.
Crack-BOOM!
Behind him, outside the wall, the Cryo-Vanguards opened fire. One hundred heavy ice-rounds shattered the sound barrier. The Gnome rider and his lizard exploded into frozen shrapnel.
The entire front row of Gnomes on the wall froze solid, their bodies turning to brittle ice before shattering under the kinetic impact of the follow-up volleys.
Elara stood outside, her spear lowered. She watched the absolute devastation. The snipers fired with mechanical precision. They did not miss. Every shot took a life.
The Carnage Core attached to Lucifer's belt across the wall began to glow brighter, transmitting a red aura to the snipers. Their ice rounds turned dark crimson. The True Damage shredded the Gnomes' iron shields like paper.
It was a massacre. It was efficient, cold, and utterly merciless.
Elara gritted her teeth. She unfurled her silver wings and launched herself into the air, flying over the barricade.
She landed heavily on the stone streets inside the city, her boots cracking the pavement.
"Lucifer!" Elara shouted over the din of battle. "This is slaughter! It is not war!"
Lucifer stood a few yards away in a large, open square. The red glow of the Carnage Core illuminated his face, casting harsh shadows across his features. His eyes held no pity. He did not look at the Gnomes dying on the walls.
He pointed his sword at the center of the square.
"Look," Lucifer commanded.
Elara turned her head.
The square was not a market. It was a butchery.
Rows of rusted iron cages lined the cavern walls. Inside the cages, dozens of humans huddled together. They were stripped naked, shivering in the freezing dampness. They were emaciated, covered in filth and sores. Men, women, and children. Many were missing limbs.
In the center of the square stood massive stone chopping blocks. Deep Gnome butchers in blood-soaked leather aprons held heavy meat cleavers.
Human remains hung from iron hooks suspended from the ceiling. Baskets of severed human hands and feet sat ready for transport. The smell of raw, rotting meat and copper was overpowering.
When the Cryo-Vanguards opened fire, the butchers had stopped their work. Now, seeing Lucifer and Elara, they raised their heavy cleavers and hissed.
Elara stared at the hanging bodies. She looked at the cages. She saw a young human girl, no older than seven, clutching the severed arm of a woman. The girl's eyes were wide, dead, and entirely broken.
The Deep Gnomes did not just take slaves. They farmed humans. They ate them.
"This is their economy," Lucifer said objectively. He did not raise his voice. He stated a simple fact. "They raid the surface.
They drag the survivors down here. They breed them in the dark, and they eat them. There are no civilians in this city, Elara. There are only monsters."
A deep, trembling breath left Elara's lungs.
The hesitation vanished from her golden eyes. The moral conflict evaporated, replaced by a blinding, holy fury.
The silver light radiating from her wings shifted, taking on a harsh, burning golden hue. Golden ichor pumped through her veins, reacting to her righteous wrath.
"I see," Elara whispered.
She turned toward the Gnome butchers. She gripped her spear with both hands.
"Let them burn."
Elara lunged. She closed the distance in a single heartbeat. Her spear thrust forward, piercing the lead butcher straight through the chest.
Golden flames erupted from the spear tip, incinerating the Gnome from the inside out. He didn't even have time to scream before he turned to ash.
Lucifer drew his longsword. The blade caught the crimson light of the Carnage Core.
[System: Carnage Core charging... 500 / 100,000]
[True Damage Buff: Active]
"Vanguards, advance!" Lucifer commanded through his comms rune.
The iron gates of the barricade blew inward, shattered by a concentrated volley of crimson ice.
The Cryo-Vanguards marched into the city. They formed a tight phalanx, sweeping down the narrow stone streets.
The Gnomes swarmed them from the alleys and rooftops. Thousands of gray bodies poured out of the hovels.
Lucifer met the charge. He swung his longsword. A wave of crimson energy detached from the blade, slicing cleanly through a dozen Gnomes in a single arc. The True Damage ignored their armor entirely. They fell in pieces.
He activated Zephyr's Grace again in short bursts. He became a blur of black and red, appearing behind groups of Gnome spearmen, severing heads and limbs with surgical precision. Every kill fed the core on his belt. The red light grew blinding.
[System: Carnage Core charging... 2,400 / 100,000]
Elara fought like the Valkyrie she was. She did not bother with defense. She walked straight into the Gnome formations.
Spears struck her silver armor and shattered. Crossbow bolts bounced off her skin. She swung her spear in massive, sweeping arcs, unleashing waves of golden fire that consumed entire city blocks.
The shrieks of the burning Gnomes echoed off the cavern walls, mingling with the deafening cracks of the Vanguard snipers.
Lucifer orchestrated the slaughter with perfect clarity. He directed the snipers to target the hanging iron towers, shooting the support chains.
The massive rust-metal structures crashed down into the crowded streets, crushing hundreds of Gnomes under tons of debris.
[Warlord's Trial: 22,040 / 500,000 Hostiles Eliminated]
Lucifer marched through the blood-soaked square, cutting down any Gnome that approached the cages. He reached the iron bars of the holding pens. He raised his sword and brought it down on the heavy lock. The True Damage shattered the iron instantly.
He ripped the cage door open. The humans inside cowered, terrified of the man bathed in red light and blood.
Lucifer did not offer them comfort. He simply pointed his bloody sword back toward the ramp leading to the surface.
"The path is clear," Lucifer said. "Run."
The slaves scrambled out of the cages. They wept, clutching each other as they sprinted toward the broken gates, fleeing the nightmare city.
Lucifer turned back to the battle. The Deep Gnome military was broken, but thousands still lurked in the deeper tunnels and breeding pits.
[System: Carnage Core charging... 8,900 / 100,000]
He looked at Elara. She stood atop a pile of burning corpses, her spear dripping with dark blood. Her golden eyes met his. There was no more questioning. There was only the grim execution of their grim task.
"Clear the lower levels," Lucifer ordered.
He gripped his sword and walked deeper into the dark. The red light of the Carnage Core led the way. The slaughter continued.
