Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Cult Stronghold

The lower levels of the Deep Gnome city were a nightmare of twisted tunnels and rusted metal grates.

Lucifer marched down the spiraling stone stairs. The red light of the Carnage Core pulsed at his hip. It cast long, bloody shadows against the damp cavern walls.

Below him, the breeding pits stretched out into the dark. It was a massive, bowl-shaped crater filled with tens of thousands of Deep Gnomes.

They swarmed over each other like gray ants. The air was thick with the stench of sweat, rust, and decaying meat.

"They are funneling into the main chamber," Elara said. She hovered a few feet off the ground, her golden wings beating slowly. "The snipers cannot hit them all in these tight corridors. There are too many."

"They don't need to," Lucifer replied.

He stood at the edge of a massive stone bridge overlooking the crater. The Gnomes shrieked. They spotted the intruders.

A wave of gray bodies surged up the cavern walls, crawling over the rocks with their bare, jagged claws. They carried crude spears and rusted blades.

Lucifer sheathed his longsword. He opened his Dimensional Vault.

He pulled out a single, glowing blue crystal. It was a standard High-Explosive Mana Mine. A common item used by miners to clear rock blockages.

He looked down at the endless swarm. He looked at the massive stone pillar in the center of the crater supporting the cavern roof.

Lucifer armed the mine. He threw it directly at the central pillar.

The crystal fell through the dark air. It struck the base of the massive stone column.

[Ding!]

[Divine Talent: Apex Multiplier Activated!]

[Applying 10,000x multiplier to Blast Radius and Kinetic Force...]

Lucifer turned his back to the crater. He grabbed Elara's arm.

"Brace," Lucifer commanded.

The mine detonated.

There was no sound at first. All oxygen in the cavern was sucked into the epicenter. Then, a blinding flash of blue light erased the darkness. The shockwave hit a microsecond later. It hit like a solid wall of iron.

The central stone pillar vanished. It was instantly vaporized by the multiplied explosive force.

The ceiling of the cavern groaned. Millions of tons of solid rock cracked. A fault line ripped across the entire underground dome. Then, the ceiling collapsed.

Massive boulders the size of castles rained down into the breeding pits. The Gnomes did not even have time to scream.

The crushing weight of the mountain flattened the entire subterranean crater.

Dust exploded up the tunnels, blowing past Lucifer and Elara in a choking, gray hurricane.

The ground shook violently. Lucifer dug his boots into the stone bridge, shielding his face with his arm. The Cryo-Vanguards behind him dropped to one knee, anchoring themselves against the tremor.

The earthquake lasted for a full minute. Then, the dust began to settle.

Lucifer looked down. The breeding pits were gone. A flat, jagged plain of crushed rock sat in their place. Nothing moved. Nothing breathed.

A blue interface exploded across Lucifer's vision. The text scrolled so fast it was a blur of light.

[Hostile Eliminated: Deep Gnome Grunt]

[Hostile Eliminated: Deep Gnome Warrior]

[Hostile Eliminated: Deep Gnome Broodmother]

...

[Mass Casualty Event Detected.]

[Calculating totals...]

[Hostiles Eliminated: 489,201]

[Warlord's Trial: 511,241 / 500,000 Hostiles Eliminated]

The Carnage Core at Lucifer's hip vibrated violently. It drank the massive surge of death energy radiating from the crushed cavern. The black glass turned a solid, burning crimson.

[Quest Complete: Warlord's Trial]

[Condition Met: Prove your right to rule.]

[Initiating Class Ascension...]

Lucifer gasped. A sudden, crushing weight slammed onto his shoulders. It was not a physical force. It was the metaphysical law of the world rewriting itself around his soul.

A column of pure, dark energy punched through the cavern ceiling and struck Lucifer. It bathed him in a deep, violet light.

His bones cracked. His muscles tore and rebuilt themselves instantly, growing denser and stronger.

The Warlord Class was not just a title; it was a physical evolution. The system did not use code. It used the raw magic of creation to mold him into a higher tier of existence.

Lucifer threw his head back. He did not scream. He gritted his teeth and absorbed the pain.

[Ascension Complete.]

[Class Upgraded: Tier 1 Warlord -> Tier 2 Warlord]

[All Base Stats Increased by 500%]

[Mana Capacity Doubled]

[New Passive Skill Unlocked: Sovereign's Weight]

[Sovereign's Weight: Your mere presence exerts physical gravity on all hostile or neutral entities of a lower Tier. Weak-minded enemies will be paralyzed or crushed.]

The dark column of energy faded. Lucifer stood perfectly still.

He opened his eyes. His irises glowed with a faint, violet ring. The air around him shimmered, distorting the light.

The Warlord aura was no longer just an intimidating presence. It was a tangible force of nature.

Fifty yards away, a handful of surviving Gnomes crawled out from the rubble. They bled from their ears and eyes. They raised their rusted daggers, preparing to charge Lucifer.

Lucifer simply looked at them. He did not move. He did not draw his sword. He let his aura expand.

The invisible wave of Sovereign's Weight rolled over the rubble.

The surviving Gnomes froze. Their eyes widened in absolute terror. They dropped their weapons. They fell to their knees.

The physical pressure of Lucifer's aura pressed down on them like an anvil. They collapsed onto their faces, gasping for air.

A second later, their hearts gave out from the sheer strain. They died without Lucifer lifting a finger.

Elara landed softly beside him. Her golden wings folded behind her back. She looked at the dead Gnomes, then at Lucifer.

"I can feel it," Elara said softly. She placed a hand over her chest. "It is heavy. Like standing at the bottom of the ocean."

"Does it hurt you?" Lucifer asked. His voice was deeper, vibrating with a new, commanding resonance.

"No," Elara replied. She stood tall. "I am a Valkyrie. My Tier is divine. Your aura demands respect, but it does not crush me."

Behind them, the one hundred Cryo-Vanguards stepped forward in perfect unison. They slammed their rifles against their chests and dropped to one knee.

Their heads bowed. They did not speak, but their absolute loyalty radiated through the cavern. The Warlord's aura did not crush allies. It empowered them.

Lucifer looked at his hands. He clenched his fists. The strength flowing through his veins was intoxicating.

He was the first Tier 2 being in the world. The rest of humanity was still struggling to figure out their basic Classes. He was already ascending the mortal ladder.

"Rise," Lucifer commanded.

The Vanguards stood up in a single, fluid motion.

"The Deep Gnomes are finished," Lucifer said. He looked past the collapsed breeding pits toward a massive, dark tunnel leading even further down. "The path is clear. We march for the Cult of Decay."

Lucifer led the way. The descent became steeper. The air grew colder. Necrotic energy hung in the air like a thick fog.

The stone walls of the tunnel changed. The rough, natural rock gave way to smooth, polished obsidian. Faint green runes glowed in the floor, pulsing with dark magic.

"Necromancy," Elara stated. She gripped her spear tightly. The golden light of her wings pushed back the green fog. "This magic is foul. It defies the natural cycle."

"The Cult of Decay worships death," Lucifer explained. He kept his eyes fixed forward. "They believe life is a disease.

They want to cure the world by turning everything into mindless, rotting flesh. They are the ones controlling the undead on the surface."

"Then we will cut out the rot at its root," Elara said.

They marched for another hour. The tunnel finally widened into an impossibly massive cavern.

Lucifer held up a hand. The army halted.

They stood on a high cliff edge overlooking the abyss. Below them stretched a vast, underground lake.

The water was not blue or black. It was a glowing, toxic green. Sludge bubbled on the surface, releasing clouds of poisonous gas.

In the center of the toxic lake sat an island. On the island stood the stronghold of the Cult of Decay.

It was a fortress built from black stone and massive, bleached bones. The necromantic pressure radiating from the fortress was suffocating.

A narrow bridge made of fused spines connected the cliff to the island.

Lucifer activated his Warlord sight. He zoomed in on the main gates.

"Guards on the wall," Lucifer noted. "But they are not zombies. They are not mindless."

Elara stepped to the edge of the cliff. She narrowed her golden eyes. "Elves. But their skin is dark as pitch. Their armor is made of shadow and bone."

"Dark Elves," Lucifer confirmed.

He remembered the lore from his past life. Dark Elves were elite, highly intelligent, and lethal. They were masters of shadow magic and poison.

They did not fight like the brainless undead. They used tactics. They used traps.

A dozen Dark Elf archers patrolled the bone gates. Their bows glowed with toxic green enchantments.

"This is not a simple monster den," Lucifer said. He placed a hand on his sword. "This is a military installation. The Cult Leader is inside. He is directing the plague."

"Do we charge the bridge?" Elara asked. She readied her spear. "My fire can burn away their poison."

"No," Lucifer said. He studied the layout of the fortress. "A frontal assault on a choke point is exactly what they want. The bridge is likely rigged to collapse. We need a different approach."

Before Lucifer could issue a new order, the air around him froze.

It was not cold. It was absolute stasis.

The toxic bubbles on the lake stopped popping. The green flames in the braziers froze mid-flicker. Elara stopped moving entirely, her wings locked in place. The Cryo-Vanguards stood like ice statues.

Time itself had stopped.

Lucifer did not panic. He had experienced magic like this only once before, in his past life. It was not a spell cast by a mortal. It was divine intervention.

The green fog in front of him swirled. It parted, revealing a massive, glowing projection.

A woman made of pure starlight stepped out of the void. She wore a gown woven from the night sky. Galaxies spun in her long, silver hair. Her eyes held the sorrow of a thousand dying stars.

[System Warning: Divine Entity Manifestation Detected.]

[Entity Name: Astrid, the Starweaver]

Lucifer stood his ground. He looked the Goddess in the eye. He did not kneel.

"You have come far, Regressor," Astrid's voice echoed in his mind. It sounded like a choir of silver bells. "But you stand at the edge of a slaughter I cannot allow."

Lucifer crossed his arms. "I am here to destroy the Cult of Decay. Unless you are their patron, you have no reason to stop me."

Astrid looked toward the black fortress. A single, glowing tear fell from her starry eyes.

"I do not care for the Cult," Astrid whispered. "I care for the guards at the gate. The Dark Elves. They are not evil, Lucifer of Obsidian. They are my children."
