Chapter 30 - The Battle at Shadow Cave

The horn echoed again through the mountains.

Long.

Loud.

Dangerously close.

Rowan stood at the cave entrance, staring down the rocky trail. Torches were climbing the mountain like a line of fire. Soldiers were moving fast.

Too fast.

"They're closer than I thought," Rowan said quietly.

Behind him, Kael was already giving orders.

"Positions," he said to the hooded fighters.Instantly the cave came alive.

Men and women moved quickly, grabbing weapons, lighting more torches, and blocking narrow entrances with heavy stones.

These people weren't just hiding in the mountains.

They were trained.

Rowan watched them for a moment and nodded slightly.

"Your people know what they're doing."

Kael picked up a sword from the wall.

"We've been preparing for this day for years."

Aria stood near the stone table, still holding the pendant tightly. Her heart was racing.

Only hours ago she had believed the war was over.

Now she was standing in the middle of another one.

Rowan noticed her silence.

He walked over to her.

"You okay?"

Aria looked up at him.

"They killed my father for this."

Rowan didn't try to argue.

Instead he said quietly,

"Then tonight… we make sure they regret it."Aria took a deep breath.

Then she nodded.

"Tell me what to do."

Outside the cave, the wind grew stronger.

Clouds covered the moon, turning the mountains into a dark maze of shadows.

Below the cliff, the army finally reached the narrow path.

A commander raised his hand.

"Spread out," he ordered.

"Search every passage."

Dozens of soldiers began climbing toward the cave entrance.Inside the cave, Rowan crouched near the rocks, watching the path carefully.

He counted quietly.

"Twenty… thirty… maybe more."

Kael joined him.

"There will be more behind them."

Rowan glanced at him.

"You planning to fight the whole army?"

Kael gave a small smile.

"No."

He pointed to the narrow path.

"We fight the first wave."Rowan understood immediately.

The path was too small for many soldiers to attack at once.

If they held the entrance…

they could slow the army.

"Not bad," Rowan admitted.

Aria stood behind them with a sword in her hands.

She had trained with weapons before, but never like this.

Never in a real battle.

Kael looked at her carefully.

"You don't have to fight."

Aria shook her head."If this is about my family… then I'm not hiding."

Rowan smirked.

"That's the spirit."

The first soldiers appeared seconds later.

Heavy boots scraped against the stone path.

Shields raised.

Swords ready.

The commander stepped forward.

"Princess Aria!"

His voice echoed across the rocks."By order of the council, surrender yourself peacefully!"

Rowan leaned against the cave wall.

"Funny," he muttered.

"They keep saying that."

The commander continued.

"Anyone protecting her will be treated as a traitor to the kingdom."

Kael stepped forward into the dim light.

"The council lost the right to speak for the kingdom a long time ago."

The commander's eyes narrowed.

"Kael."

Rowan glanced sideways."You two know each other?"

Kael answered calmly.

"Yes."

The commander drew his sword slowly.

"I warned the council about you."

Kael's voice turned cold.

"And I warned them about you."

The commander raised his hand.

"Archers!"

Rowan's eyes widened.

"Archers?"

Before anyone could react—

arrows flew from the darkness. They struck the cave walls, sending sparks and stone fragments flying.

"Down!" Rowan shouted.

Everyone ducked behind rocks and shields.

More arrows rained down.

Kael gritted his teeth.

"They brought archers this time."

Rowan peeked over the rock.

"Guess they're not warning us anymore."

Suddenly the arrows stopped.

The commander stepped forward again.

"Last chance!"

Kael stood up slowly."No."

The commander's expression hardened.

"Then kill them."

The soldiers charged.

Steel clashed instantly.

The narrow path exploded into chaos.

Rowan moved like lightning.

His dagger flashed through the air as he blocked a sword and pushed a soldier off the cliff.

Another rushed toward Aria.

She raised her sword just in time.

The impact sent a shock through her arms. The soldier swung again.

But Aria stepped aside and struck back.

The blade hit his shoulder.

He fell.

Her heart pounded.

She had just fought her first real battle.

Rowan grinned briefly.

"Not bad!"

More soldiers poured onto the path.

Kael fought at the front, his sword moving with deadly precision.

Every strike was controlled.Every step calculated.

But the soldiers kept coming.

Too many.

Rowan noticed it first.

"They're pushing through!"

Kael glanced at the path.

More torches were climbing the mountain.

Dozens more soldiers.

"We can't hold them forever," Rowan said.

Kael nodded grimly.

"I know."

Aria stepped back, breathing hard."What do we do?"

Kael looked toward the back of the cave.

"There's another tunnel."

Rowan blinked.

"You were saving that information?"

Kael smirked slightly.

"Just in case."

Another group of soldiers forced their way onto the path.

The commander shouted,

"Push forward!"

Kael turned toward Aria.

"You take the tunnel."Aria shook her head.

"No."

"You must," Kael said firmly.

"Without you, the council cannot unlock the power."

Rowan grabbed her arm.

"He's right."

Aria looked between them.

"And leave you here?"

Rowan gave a small grin.

"Someone has to make sure they don't follow you too quickly."

Kael nodded."My fighters will hold the entrance."

Aria's chest tightened.

"This isn't a goodbye."

Rowan chuckled.

"Relax."

He spun his dagger once in his hand.

"I'm very hard to kill."

Another wave of soldiers charged.

Kael shouted,

"Go!"

Rowan pushed Aria toward the dark tunnel behind the cave.

"Run!"Aria hesitated for a second.

Then she ran into the darkness.

Behind her, the sound of battle grew louder.

Steel clashing.

Men shouting.

Stone cracking.

Rowan stood beside Kael at the cave entrance.

The commander stepped forward again.

"You cannot win."

Rowan smirked.

"Winning isn't the goal."

Kael raised his sword."Surviving long enough is."

The soldiers attacked again.

And deep inside the mountain…

Aria ran through the dark tunnel alone.

Not knowing that the path ahead would lead her closer to the secret her family had protected for a thousand years.

And the power that could change the fate of every kingdom.
