Chapter 32 - The Awakening

The rumbling grew louder.

The entire chamber trembled as the ancient stone door slowly opened wider. Dust fell from the ceiling, and the torches along the walls flickered violently.

A cold wind rushed out from the darkness behind the door.

It felt… wrong.

Ancient.

Alive.

Varic stepped back instinctively.

"What… is this?" he whispered.

Aria stared into the darkness beyond the door. Her heart was beating so fast it felt like it might break through her chest."I don't know," she said quietly.

For a thousand years her family had protected whatever was hidden here.

But no one had ever told her what it actually was.

Behind Varic, the soldiers tightened their grip on Rowan.

Rowan watched the open doorway carefully.

"That sound," he muttered.

"Yeah," Aria replied.

"I hear it."

Slow.Heavy.

Like something massive moving deep inside the mountain.

Varic recovered first.

His fear quickly turned back into excitement.

A dangerous smile spread across his face.

"Perfect."

Aria looked at him sharply.

"Perfect?"

Varic stepped toward the door again, his eyes glowing with ambition.

"All this time your family guarded it like a secret."He laughed softly.

"And now… it belongs to me."

Rowan shook his head.

"You still don't get it, do you?"

Varic ignored him.

"Bring the prisoner closer," he ordered the soldiers.

They dragged Rowan forward.

Varic pointed his sword toward Aria.

"You will step aside."

Aria didn't move.

"No."

Varic's patience snapped."You think you're protecting the world."

His voice became cold.

"But the world needs power."

The rumbling from the darkness suddenly grew stronger.

Stone cracked.

The ground shook violently.

Everyone stumbled slightly.

Then—

a sound echoed from inside the mountain.

A deep roar.

Not human.

Not anything Aria had ever heard before. The soldiers froze.

One of them whispered nervously,

"What was that?"

Rowan's eyes widened.

"Oh… that's definitely not good."

Varic's smile slowly disappeared.

Something moved in the darkness beyond the door.

A massive shadow.

Slow.

Heavy.

Closer.

Aria stepped back. Her instincts screamed danger.

Then two glowing eyes appeared inside the darkness.

Huge.

Burning like molten gold.

The soldiers panicked.

"What is that thing?!"

The creature stepped forward into the torchlight.

Gasps filled the chamber.

It was enormous.

Its body was covered in dark stone-like scales. Wings folded tightly against its back, larger than the chamber walls.Smoke drifted from its nostrils.

And its golden eyes stared directly at the humans standing before it.

Rowan blinked slowly.

"Okay," he said quietly.

"That's a dragon."

Silence filled the chamber.

Varic looked stunned.

"A… dragon?"

The creature lowered its massive head slightly.

Its gaze locked onto Aria.

Not Varic.Aria.

Her heart pounded.

The pendant symbol on the door suddenly began glowing faintly.

The dragon's deep voice echoed inside the chamber.

Not spoken aloud.

But inside her mind.

"Blood of the Guardian."

Aria froze.

"Did… did it just talk?" Rowan asked.

The dragon stepped closer.

Its claws scraping against the stone floor. The soldiers trembled.

Varic stared in disbelief.

"This is impossible…"

The dragon's eyes remained on Aria.

"You carry the blood of the first king."

Aria swallowed hard.

"My father… protected you?"

The dragon's voice rumbled again inside her mind.

"Your bloodline swore the ancient oath."

Suddenly the dragon turned its massive head toward Varic.

Its golden eyes burned with anger."But he… comes with greed."

Varic raised his sword desperately.

"Kill it!"

The soldiers hesitated.

Rowan laughed weakly.

"Good luck with that."

One terrified soldier fired an arrow.

The arrow struck the dragon's scales.

And bounced off harmlessly.

The dragon's eyes flared.

Its chest expanded.

Rowan's eyes widened instantly."Oh no."

A blast of fire exploded from the dragon's mouth.

Flames roared across the chamber.

Soldiers screamed and scattered as the fire slammed into the stone floor, forcing everyone back.

Varic stumbled backward in shock.

"This wasn't supposed to happen!"

Aria stared at the dragon.

Her mind racing.

This creature…

had been the secret her family protected for centuries. Not a weapon.

Not power.

A guardian.

And now it was awake.

The dragon lowered its head toward her again.

Its voice echoed inside her mind once more.

"The world outside has changed."

Aria nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Then the oath must be renewed."

Before Aria could respond—

Varic shouted in rage."You think a monster will stop me?!"

He grabbed Rowan and pulled a dagger to his throat.

"Control it!"

Aria froze.

"Or your friend dies."

The dragon growled.

The entire chamber trembled again.

Rowan sighed.

"You know," he said calmly,

"I'm really starting to hate this guy."

Aria looked between Rowan… the dragon… and Varic.Everything had led to this moment.

Her father's death.

The war.

The chase through the mountains.

Now the fate of the kingdom stood inside this chamber.

And the dragon was waiting.

Waiting for her decision.
