The smoke from the dragon's fire slowly faded into the cold air of the ancient chamber.
For a moment, no one moved.
The only sound was the distant echo of falling stones and the heavy breathing of terrified soldiers. Flickering torches cast long shadows on the walls, making the enormous creature at the center of the chamber look even more terrifying.
The dragon.
Its massive body was covered in dark, stone-like scales that reflected the firelight. Its folded wings were larger than the chamber walls themselves. Thin trails of smoke curled from its nostrils as its golden eyes glowed like molten metal.
And those eyes were not looking at VaricThey were looking at Aria.
Aria felt frozen in place.
Her heart was pounding so violently that it hurt. Every instinct in her body screamed that what she was seeing was impossible.
Dragons did not exist.
They were legends.
Stories told to children.
And yet the creature standing before her was very real.
For centuries her family had guarded the secret hidden inside this mountain.
But no one had ever told her the truth.
It wasn't a weapon.It wasn't treasure.
It was a guardian.
Suddenly a sharp voice shattered the silence.
"Don't move!"
Varic's voice echoed through the chamber.
Aria's head snapped toward him.
During the chaos, Varic had grabbed Rowan and pulled him back. Now he stood several steps away, holding Rowan tightly while pressing a dagger against his throat.
The blade gleamed in the torchlight.
A thin line of blood slowly formed on Rowan's neck.Aria's breath caught.
"Varic… stop," she said quietly.
But Varic only smiled.
It was not a normal smile.
It was the smile of a man who had gone too far to turn back.
His eyes burned with ambition.
With madness.
"You think you've won?" Varic said coldly.
His grip tightened around Rowan's collar.
"Control the dragon."
Aria stared at him."What?"
"You heard me," Varic said. "Control it."
He pressed the dagger harder against Rowan's throat.
"Or your friend dies."
The dragon let out a low growl.
The ground trembled beneath its weight.
The soldiers who remained alive slowly backed away in fear.
Even they no longer believed they were in control of the situation.
Rowan sighed.
Despite the dagger at his throat, he somehow looked… annoyed."You know," he muttered calmly, "I really hate this guy."
Varic ignored him.
His attention was fixed on Aria.
"Your family guarded this thing for a thousand years," he said.
"Which means it must obey your bloodline."
He gestured toward the dragon with his sword.
"So command it."
Aria felt her mind racing.
She looked at Rowan.
Her friend gave her a small shrug."Don't worry about me," Rowan said.
"Honestly, this whole adventure has been a terrible idea from the beginning."
Aria almost laughed.
Almost.
But fear twisted inside her chest.
If she tried to control the dragon and failed—
Varic would kill Rowan.
If she obeyed Varic—
he would gain the power of a dragon.
And the entire kingdom would burn.
The dragon's voice suddenly echoed inside her mind again.
Deep.Ancient.
Powerful.
"He comes with greed."
Aria slowly turned toward the creature.
Its massive golden eyes remained locked on her.
"You carry the blood of the first king."
Her pendant began glowing faintly.
A warm golden light spread across the chamber.
Aria swallowed hard.
"My father… protected you?"
The dragon's voice rumbled inside her thoughts."Your bloodline swore the ancient oath."
Memories flashed in Aria's mind.
Her father standing before the mountain.
His serious voice.
His warnings.
One day you will understand.
She understood now.
The dragon was not a weapon.
It was a guardian.
A protector of the world.
And Varic wanted to enslave it.
Behind her, Varic shouted impatiently"I'm running out of patience!"
The dagger pressed deeper into Rowan's neck.
A small drop of blood fell onto the stone floor.
Aria's heart twisted.
"Wait!" she said.
Varic smiled again.
"That's better."
Aria slowly stepped forward.
The dragon watched her carefully.
The chamber felt strangely quiet.
Almost as if the mountain itself was holding its breath. Her pendant glowed brighter with every step.
Golden light reflected across the dragon's scales.
The dragon lowered its massive head slightly.
Respectfully.
Aria stopped just a few steps away from it.
Its enormous eye was level with her entire body.
She raised her hand slowly.
For a moment she hesitated.
Then she touched the dragon's scales.
They were warm.Almost like living stone.
Power surged through her body.
Not painful.
But overwhelming.
Her mind filled with ancient memories.
Kings.
Wars.
Battles fought beside dragons.
A sacred promise.
The dragon spoke again.
"Renew the oath."
Aria closed her eyes.
Behind her, Varic shouted angrily"Stop whispering to it!"
Aria ignored him.
She took a deep breath.
Then she spoke.
"I am Aria, daughter of the Guardian."
Her voice echoed through the chamber.
"I carry the blood of the first king."
The golden light from her pendant exploded outward.
The torches flickered wildly.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
"I swear to protect this world.""From greed."
"From darkness."
"And from those who seek power at the cost of everything else."
The dragon's wings slowly spread.
Wind rushed through the chamber.
Its golden eyes blazed brighter than ever.
Varic's expression suddenly changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"No…" he whispered.
"This wasn't supposed to happen."
The dragon lowered its head before Aria.A gesture of loyalty.
Of recognition.
"Guardian accepted."
The mountain shook violently.
The bond was complete.
Varic's face twisted with rage.
"You think this changes anything?!"
In a desperate move, he shoved Rowan forward and grabbed his sword.
"If I can't control it—"
He charged toward the dragon.
"I'll kill it!"Rowan stumbled and fell to the ground.
"Oh this is going to end badly," he muttered.
Varic raised his sword and ran straight toward the dragon.
The creature did not move.
It simply watched him.
Then its chest expanded.
Rowan's eyes widened.
"Oh no."
Fire exploded from the dragon's mouth.
A massive wave of flames filled the chamber.
Varic screamed as he was thrown backward by the blast. The remaining soldiers scattered in terror.
Some dropped their weapons and fled toward the tunnel.
Others collapsed in fear.
Within seconds, the battle was over.
Silence returned to the chamber.
Smoke drifted through the air.
Varic lay on the stone floor, barely moving.
Rowan slowly sat up, coughing.
"Well," he said.
"That escalated quickly."
Aria rushed to his side."Are you hurt?"
Rowan rubbed his neck where the dagger had been.
"I've had better days."
Then he looked at the dragon.
A huge smile appeared on his face.
"Okay."
He pointed at it.
"That is officially the coolest thing I've ever seen."
Aria laughed softly.
The dragon slowly approached them.
Its enormous body filled the chamber.
But its presence no longer felt terrifyingIt felt… protective.
It lowered its head toward Aria once more.
"The Guardian has returned."
Outside the mountain, thunder rolled across the sky.
Storm clouds gathered above the peaks.
The world beyond the mountain was changing.
War was coming.
Dark forces were rising.
But now the ancient guardian had awakened.
And it had chosen its rider.
Aria stood beside the dragon, staring toward the distant tunnel that led back to the world.
Rowan stood beside her.
"Just so you know," he said casually."If we survive this…"
"I'm definitely writing a book about it."
Aria smiled faintly.
Far away in the shadows of the tunnel, Varic's fingers twitched.
His eyes slowly opened.
Burning with hatred.
The war had only just begun.
