"My ex," she snapped.
"Wasn't it your childhood crush?" Ben corrected, a small, knowing smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
"I think it might have been my mum, actually." Patricia sighed, her shoulders slumping as the conversation took a sharp turn into unexpected territory.
Now that a completely different kind of discussion had started, and seeing how Ben was leaning in to ask more about her family history, I realised I'd better seize this chance and start working. The silly banter between Ben and Patricia after questioning Xavier's humanity had distracted them, and even though I rankled slightly at how they laughed about it, I was happy to ignore both of them once they changed the subject.
