Chapter 21 - Thing That Watches

The rain had stopped, but the world still felt wet.

Not outside. Inside.

Arjun walked through the abandoned corridor of the academy, shoes echoing softly against cracked marble. Every step felt heavier than the last, like the building itself was watching him move.

Lights flickered overhead. Not broken. Breathing.

He hated that feeling.

Since the incident underground, silence no longer meant peace. Silence meant something was waiting.

Behind him, slow footsteps followed.

Mira caught up, slightly out of breath. Her hair was damp, strands sticking to her face.

You walked off again.

Arjun didn't stop.

Needed air.

This place doesn't have air anymore, she said quietly.

He knew she was right.

The academy had changed after the Rift opened. Walls felt closer. Shadows stayed longer than they should. Even people spoke less, as if afraid their words might wake something.

They reached the balcony overlooking the courtyard.

Students gathered below in nervous groups. Guards stood at every entrance now. Weapons visible. Fear visible.

Arjun leaned against the railing.

You feel it too, right?

Mira nodded immediately.

Like someone counting us.

Her words sent a chill down his spine.

Not watching.

Counting.

A faint vibration passed through the air.

Both of them froze.

The sky darkened slightly, even though evening hadn't arrived yet. Clouds twisted unnaturally, forming a slow spiral above the academy.

Then came the whisper.

Not sound.

Thought.

A pressure inside the skull.

Arjun grabbed the railing as memories flashed violently through his mind. The underground chamber. The broken seal. The shadow with white eyes.

And a voice.

Incomplete.

Hungry.

Below, students began panicking. Some covered their ears. Others collapsed.

Mira grabbed his arm.

It's back.

No.

Arjun's gaze sharpened.

It never left.

The spiral in the sky tightened.

For a single second, reality cracked.

A massive silhouette appeared behind the clouds. Too large to understand. Too wrong to describe. Its shape shifted constantly, like existence itself refused to define it.

Then it vanished.

The pressure disappeared instantly.

Silence returned.

But the damage remained.

People screamed below. One student laughed hysterically. Another stared upward without blinking.

Arjun exhaled slowly.

It's getting closer.

Mira looked at him.

What is it?

He hesitated.

The word felt dangerous even inside his own head.

A witness.

She frowned.

Witness to what?

Arjun's eyes darkened.

To the end of this world.

A sudden voice interrupted them.

So you felt it too.

They turned.

Kael stood at the balcony entrance, hands in his pockets, expression unusually serious.

For once, he wasn't smiling.

The higher council just confirmed it, he said. That thing wasn't an accident.

Then what was it?

Kael looked directly at Arjun.

A response.

The air grew heavy again.

Response to who, Mira asked.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

His eyes stayed fixed on Arjun.

To you.

The words landed like a blade.

Arjun felt his heartbeat slow instead of speed up.

Somewhere deep inside him, something stirred.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Far above the academy, hidden behind layers of reality, something unseen opened its eyes again.

And this time, it was fully awake.
