Chapter 22 - Echoes That Should Not Exist

Night arrived too quickly.

The academy lights turned on one by one, but darkness still felt stronger than usual, like it had weight now. Students stayed inside their rooms. Corridors that were once loud with conversations now carried only distant footsteps and nervous whispers.

Arjun sat alone near the window of the empty classroom.

Outside, the sky looked normal again.

That was the problem.

It was pretending.

His fingers tapped slowly against the desk. A rhythm he didn't remember learning. Each tap felt synchronized with something far away, something vast.

Across the room, Mira watched him quietly.

You haven't blinked in three minutes.

He finally moved his eyes.

Didn't notice.

She walked closer and sat on the desk beside him.

You're changing.

Not accusation. Not fear. Just observation.

Arjun looked down at his hands.

They felt unfamiliar. Warmer than usual. Faint lines of pale light flickered beneath his skin for a split second before disappearing.

He clenched his fist.

You saw that too, Mira said softly.

Yeah.

Silence stretched between them.

Outside, wind brushed against the glass.

Then Arjun spoke again.

When it appeared… I felt recognized.

Mira's expression tightened.

Recognized how?

Like… it already knew me.

The words felt wrong the moment they left his mouth.

Before Mira could reply, the classroom lights flickered violently.

Once.

Twice.

Then darkness swallowed the room.

A low hum filled the air.

Not electrical.

Alive.

Mira stood immediately.

This isn't normal.

Arjun didn't move. His eyes focused on the far corner of the classroom.

Something stood there.

A girl.

White hair. Barefoot. Motionless.

Lyra.

She hadn't entered through the door.

She was simply there.

You shouldn't be here, Mira said cautiously.

Lyra tilted her head slightly.

You misunderstand. I am always here.

Her voice was calm, almost gentle, yet every word felt heavier than gravity.

Arjun stood slowly.

You felt it too.

Lyra nodded once.

The Observer has begun counting.

Mira crossed her arms.

Counting what?

Lyra looked directly at Arjun.

Remaining possibilities.

A cold silence filled the room.

Arjun frowned.

Possibilities of what?

Lyra stepped closer. No footsteps. No sound.

Of survival.

The lights suddenly turned back on.

For a brief second, Lyra's shadow stretched unnaturally across the floor, forming shapes that did not belong to a human body.

Then it returned to normal.

Kael burst into the classroom.

Emergency meeting. Now. Everyone with anomaly exposure is being called.

He stopped when he saw Lyra.

His expression hardened instantly.

Who is she?

Lyra smiled faintly.

No one important.

Kael clearly didn't believe that.

We don't have time for this. Something is happening outside the city barrier.

Arjun felt it before Kael finished speaking.

A distant pulse.

Slow.

Massive.

Like a heartbeat larger than the world itself.

Boom.

Windows trembled.

Boom.

The ground shook lightly.

Students screamed somewhere down the corridor.

Mira whispered.

That's not inside the academy.

Kael nodded grimly.

No. It's coming from beyond the walls.

Arjun walked toward the door.

Then we shouldn't stay here.

Kael grabbed his shoulder.

You don't understand. The council ordered lockdown.

Arjun looked back at him calmly.

It's not coming for the academy.

His eyes reflected faint silver light.

It's coming for me.

The heartbeat echoed again across the night sky.

Closer this time.

And somewhere beyond human sight, reality itself began preparing for impact.
