Chapter 18: The Calm Before
---
[Scene: Class 1-A - Morning]
(Kenta sits at his desk, but he's not working. He's staring out the window. Takahashi leans over.)
Takahashi Kenji: "Dude. You've been staring at nothing for ten minutes."
Kenta: (not responding)
Takahashi Kenji: "Kenta? Earth to genius?"
Kenta: (blinking) "What?"
Takahashi Kenji: "What's wrong with you? You've been weird ever since your mom left."
Kenta: (quietly) "Nothing's wrong."
Takahashi Kenji: (not believing) "Sure. And I'm the prime minister."
(Kenta's phone buzzes. Group chat.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun! You okay? You seemed distant this morning! "
Yui: "We're worried about you! Did we do something wrong? "
Kenta: (typing) "I'm fine. Just thinking."
Sui: "Thinking about WHAT?!"
Yui: "Tell us!"
Kenta: (pause) "Astronomy."
Sui: "..."
Yui: "..."
Sui: "That's so Kenta-kun."
Yui: "We'll take it! As long as you're okay! "
(Kenta almost smiles. Puts his phone down.)
Takahashi Kenji: (reading over his shoulder) "Astronomy, huh? You thinking about the stars?"
Kenta: "Something like that."
---
[Scene: School Hallway - Between Classes]
(Sui and Yui walk together. Both wear their matching hair clips.)
Sui: "Yui... did you notice? Kenta-kun keeps looking at us."
Yui: "I noticed. But when we look back, he looks away."
Sui: "Is he avoiding us?"
Yui: "I don't think so. It's like... he's thinking about something. Something important."
Sui: (nervous) "What if he figured out how we feel?"
Yui: "What if he DID figure it out? What if he's trying to figure out how to let us down gently?"
Sui: (panicking) "DON'T SAY THAT!"
Yui: "I'm just saying! We haven't actually told him! He might think we're just... friends!"
Sui: (grabbing Yui's arm) "What do we do?!"
Yui: (thinking) "We wait. And watch. And when the time is right..."
Sui: "When will that be?"
Yui: (looking out the window at the clear sky) "Maybe sooner than we think."
---
[Scene: School Entrance - Afternoon]
(Kenta walks toward the gate. Sui and Yui are waiting.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun!"
Yui: "Wait for us!"
(They catch up. Fall into their usual positions on either side.)
Kenta: "You didn't have to wait."
Sui: "We WANTED to."
Yui: "Always."
(They walk in silence for a moment.)
Sui: (noticing) "Kenta-kun... you're doing it again."
Kenta: "Doing what?"
Yui: "Staring at us. Then looking away."
Kenta: (ears red) "I wasn't staring."
Sui: (grinning) "Your ears say otherwise."
Kenta: "..."
Yui: (softly) "Kenta-kun... is something on your mind?"
Kenta: (long pause) "I've been thinking."
Sui: "About?"
Kenta: "The stars. My father. You two."
Sui & Yui: (in unison, blushing) "US?!"
Kenta: "You're always there. In my thoughts. I don't know why."
Yui: (quietly) "Maybe because we care about you."
Kenta: "Maybe."
(They reach the gate.)
Sui: "Same time tomorrow?"
Kenta: "Actually... can we meet on the hill tomorrow night?"
Sui & Yui: (in unison) "THE HILL?!"
Kenta: "The sky will be clear. I want to show you something."
Yui: (heart racing) "Like... stars again?"
Kenta: "Something like that."
Sui: (nodding) "We'll be there."
Yui: (also nodding) "Always."
(They part ways. Kenta walks home. The girls watch him go.)
Sui: (whispering) "Yui... tomorrow night... on the hill..."
Yui: (whispering back) "This feels different. Important."
Sui: "What if he... what if he wants to tell us something?"
Yui: "Then we'll be ready."
---
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(Kenta sits at his desk. The astrolabe is polished. The whiteboard has equations. But in front of him is a new notebook. Small. Plain.)
(He opens it. Writes.)
Kenta's Journal:
"January 28th. Mom visited. She said Sui and Yui care about me a lot. I already knew that. But hearing it from her made me think.
I think about them all the time now. When I wake up. When I solve problems. When I look at the stars.
Is this what caring feels like? This warm feeling in my chest? This need to see them, to hear them, to have them near?
I don't understand it. But I don't want it to stop.
Tomorrow night. The hill. I'll tell them something. Not everything. I'm not ready for everything. But something.
I hope they understand."
(He closes the notebook. Looks at the astrolabe.)
Kenta: (whispering) "Father... I think I'm falling."
---
[Scene: School - Next Morning - The Blackboard]
(Kenta arrives early. The hallway is empty. But the main bulletin board has a new section—a blackboard for students to share interesting discoveries.)
Teacher: (passing by) "Morik? You're here early."
Kenta: "Sensei. Can I use the blackboard?"
Teacher: (curious) "For what?"
Kenta: "A proof. Hawking radiation."
Teacher: (eyes widening) "Hawking radiation?! That's university level—no, that's PhD level theoretical physics!"
Kenta: "I know."
(Word spreads fast. Within 20 minutes, students gather around the blackboard. Teachers too. Professor Hayashi arrives, pushing through the crowd.)
Professor Hayashi: "Morik?! What is this?"
Kenta: (already writing) "Hawking radiation. Black holes emit radiation due to quantum effects near the event horizon."
(He writes rapidly.)
---
[The Blackboard - Kenta's Proof]
Step 1: Quantum Fields in Curved Spacetime
"In a Schwarzschild black hole metric: ds² = -(1-2M/r)dt² + (1-2M/r)⁻¹dr² + r²dΩ²"
Step 2: Vacuum Fluctuations Near the Event Horizon
"Particle-antiparticle pairs fluctuate. Normally they annihilate. But near the event horizon, one falls in, one escapes."
Step 3: The Bogoliubov Transformation
"The vacuum state at future infinity differs from past infinity. The Bogoliubov coefficients β ≠ 0 indicates particle creation."
Step 4: Temperature Derivation
"Using the surface gravity κ = 1/4M, the Hawking temperature is: T_H = κ/2π = 1/8πM"
Step 5: The Spectrum
"The radiation is thermal with spectrum: N(ω) = 1/(e^(ω/T_H) - 1)"
Step 6: Black Hole Evaporation
"Mass loss rate: dM/dt = - (constant)/M². A black hole of mass M will evaporate in time t ~ M³."
(He fills the entire board. Equations. Diagrams. Notes.)
Kenta: (turning around) "Hawking radiation proves black holes aren't eternal. They slowly evaporate. And when they do, they take information with them—which creates the information paradox."
(Dead silence.)
Professor Hayashi: (staring) "You did this... in 20 minutes?"
Kenta: "I've been thinking about it."
Student 1: (whispering) "He just proved Hawking radiation. On a blackboard. In 20 minutes."
Student 2: "Is he even human?"
Sui: (pushing through crowd) "KENTA-KUN!"
Yui: (also pushing) "WE HEARD!"
(They reach him. Stare at the blackboard. Stare at him.)
Sui: (awed) "You did all this?"
Kenta: (ears red) "It's just physics."
Yui: (grabbing his arm) "It's NOT just physics! It's GENIUS physics!"
Professor Hayashi: (taking photos) "Morik, I'm sending this to colleagues at Tokyo University. They won't believe it."
Kenta: "I have more. About the information paradox."
Professor Hayashi: (wiping a tear) "You're going to be famous one day."
Sui: (squeezing his arm) "He already is. To us."
---
[Scene: After School - The Walk]
(They walk together. Sui and Yui won't stop staring at him.)
Kenta: "You're staring."
Sui: "You just proved Hawking radiation!"
Yui: "On a blackboard! In 20 minutes!"
Kenta: "It's not that impressive."
Sui: "IT IS!"
Yui: "VERY IMPRESSIVE!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "You're both weird."
Sui: "YOUR weird!"
Yui: "Always!"
(They reach the gate.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun... tonight. The hill. We'll be there."
Yui: "We promise."
Kenta: (nodding) "I know."
Sui: (kissing his cheek) "For the Hawking proof."
Yui: (kissing his other cheek) "For being a genius."
Kenta: (touching his cheeks) "Two more."
Sui: (grinning) "Count them all!"
Yui: (also grinning) "You're almost at 30!"
Kenta: (almost laughing) "Maybe."
(They run off.)
Kenta: (standing there, touching his cheeks) (thinking) "Tonight. I'll tell them something."
(He walks home, heart pounding.)
---
[Scene: Sui's Room - Evening]
(Sui and Yui are on a video call.)
Sui: "Yui... tonight feels different."
Yui: "I know. He's been acting strange. Thoughtful."
Sui: "What if he wants to tell us he doesn't want us around anymore?"
Yui: "That's impossible. He let us read his diary. He shares his father's astrolabe. He proves Hawking radiation and the first people he looks for are us."
Sui: (tearing up) "You think... he might...?"
Yui: (also emotional) "I don't know. But I think tonight is important."
Sui: "What do we do?"
Yui: "We go. We listen. And whatever happens... we face it together."
Sui: "Together."
---
[Scene: The Hill - Night]
(The sky is clear. Millions of stars. Kenta arrives first. Astrolabe in hand. Heart pounding.)
(Footsteps. Sui and Yui appear. Their hair clips shine in the starlight.)
Sui: (nervous) "Kenta-kun..."
Yui: (also nervous) "We're here."
Kenta: (looking at them) "You came."
Sui: "Always."
Yui: "Always."
(They sit on the grass. Same spots. Sui left. Yui right. Kenta between them.)
Kenta: (looking at the stars) "My father used to bring me here. He'd point at the stars and tell me their names. Their stories."
Sui: (quietly) "He sounds wonderful."
Kenta: "He was."
Yui: "What did he tell you about the stars?"
Kenta: (pause) "He said they're like people. Some burn bright and fast. Some burn slow and steady. Some explode and become something new."
Sui: (softly) "Which one are you?"
Kenta: (looking at them) "I don't know yet. But I think... I'm changing."
Yui: "Changing how?"
Kenta: (long pause) "I've been thinking. About you two. About how I feel when you're near."
Sui: (heart racing) "How... how do you feel?"
Kenta: (touching his chest) "Warm. Safe. Like I'm exactly where I belong."
Yui: (tearing up) "Kenta-kun..."
Kenta: "I don't understand everything. I don't know what this feeling is called. But I know I don't want it to stop."
Sui: (crying) "We don't want it to stop either."
Yui: (also crying) "We've felt this way for so long."
Kenta: (looking at them both) "Then maybe... we should keep feeling it. Together."
Sui: (grabbing his hand) "Together."
Yui: (grabbing his other hand) "Together."
(They sit in silence. Hands held. Stars above. Hearts full.)
Kenta: (quietly) "I'm not ready to say everything yet. But I wanted you to know... you're important to me. More than math. More than problems. More than anything."
Sui: (leaning on his shoulder) "That's enough."
Yui: (leaning on his other shoulder) "More than enough."
Kenta: (looking at the stars) "Tomorrow night... same time?"
Sui: "Same time."
Yui: "Same place."
Kenta: "I'll tell you more then."
Sui: (smiling through tears) "We'll be waiting."
Yui: (also smiling) "Always waiting."
---
[Scene: Walking Down]
(They walk down the hill. Hands still held.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun... tonight was perfect."
Yui: "The best night."
Kenta: "It's not over yet."
(They reach the bottom.)
Sui: (standing on tiptoes) "For tonight."
(She kisses his cheek.)
Yui: (also on tiptoes) "For tomorrow."
(She kisses his other cheek.)
Kenta: (touching his cheeks) "Two more."
Sui: (grinning) "Getting closer to 30!"
Yui: (laughing) "Maybe 40 by next week!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "Maybe."
(They part. The girls run off. Kenta watches them go.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Tomorrow night. I'll tell them everything."
(He walks home, heart full.)
---
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(He opens his journal. Writes.)
Kenta's Journal:
"January 29th. I told them they're important to me. They cried. They held my hands. They said 'together.'
Tomorrow night. The hill. I'll tell them the rest.
I think I know what this feeling is now.
It's not math. It's not physics. It's something else.
Something I want to keep forever."
(He closes the journal. Looks at the astrolabe. Looks at the stars.)
Kenta: (whispering) "Father... I think I'm ready."
(His phone buzzes. Two messages.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun! Tonight was magic! Thank you for sharing your heart with us! Tomorrow night... we'll be ready too! Sleep well!"
Yui: "My prince~ tonight changed everything. We'll see you on the hill tomorrow. And we'll tell you everything too. Goodnight!"
Kenta: (smiling) (typing back to both): "Goodnight. Tomorrow night. The hill. I'll be waiting."
(Immediate replies:)
Sui: "WE'LL BE THERE! "
Yui: "COUNTING THE HOURS! "
Sui: "SWEET DREAMS OUR KENTA-KUN!"
Yui: "DREAM OF US! (TOMORROW IS THE DAY!) "
Kenta: (putting down the phone) (looking at the stars)
Kenta: (thinking) "Tomorrow. Everything changes."
(He closes his eyes, smiling.)
Kenta: (thinking) "And for the first time... I'm not scared."
(He falls asleep, happy.)
