Chapter 17: A Mother's Love

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Saturday Morning]
(Kenta is at his desk, working on problems. His phone rings. Unknown number. He answers.)
Kenta: "Hello?"
Woman's voice: (warm, familiar) "Kenta! My baby!"
Kenta: (freezing) "Mom?"
Mom: "Surprise! I'm at the station! Which bus do I take to your hostel?"
Kenta: (standing abruptly) "You're HERE?!"
Mom: "I haven't seen you in months! And you never send photos! I had to come check on my genius son!"
Kenta: (panicking internally) "Mom, I—my room is small—I wasn't expecting—"
Mom: "Too late! Already here! Send address! Love you! Bye!"
(She hangs up.)
Kenta: (staring at phone) (thinking) "Mom is coming. Mom is coming. MOM IS COMING."
(He looks around his room. It's messy. Papers everywhere. Clothes on the chair. The astrolabe needs polishing.)
Kenta: (grabbing phone) (thinking) "I need help."
(He opens group chat. Types.)
Kenta: "My mom is coming. She'll be here in an hour."
(Immediate replies:)
Sui: "WHAT?!"
Yui: "YOUR MOM?!"
Sui: "KENTA-KUN'S MOM?!"
Yui: "WE'RE COMING OVER!"
Sui: "DON'T MOVE! WE'LL HELP!"
Kenta: "You don't have to—"
Yui: "TOO LATE! ALREADY LEAVING!"
Sui: "CLEANING SQUAD ASSEMBLE! "
Kenta: (staring at phone) (almost smiling) "...Okay."

[Scene: Kenta's Room - 20 Minutes Later]
(Sui and Yui burst through the door, armed with cleaning supplies.)
Sui: "KENTA-KUN! WE'RE HERE!"
Yui: "WHERE DO WE START?!"
Kenta: (already cleaning) "Everywhere."
Sui: (grabbing a broom) "ON IT!"
Yui: (grabbing a cloth) "ME TOO!"
(They work frantically. Sweeping. Dusting. Organizing. Kenta polishes the astrolabe carefully.)
Sui: (noticing) "You're polishing your father's astrolabe?"
Kenta: (nodding) "Mom will want to see it."
Yui: (softening) "She must miss him too."
Kenta: (quietly) "She does."
Sui: (stopping for a moment) "Kenta-kun... we're nervous."
Kenta: "Why?"
Yui: "Because it's your MOM! What if she doesn't like us?!"
Sui: "What if she thinks we're weird?!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "You ARE weird."
Sui: "NOT HELPING!"
Yui: "KENTA-KUN!"
Kenta: (pause) "She'll like you. She likes everyone."
Sui: (doubtful) "Really?"
Kenta: "She liked the stray cat that kept stealing our food."
Yui: (giggling) "That's... somehow reassuring?"

[Scene: The Door Knocks - An Hour Later]
(The room is spotless. Sui and Yui stand nervously behind Kenta. He opens the door.)
(A small woman stands there. Worn clothes. Warm eyes. The same tired but kind expression Kenta has. She's carrying a large bag.)
Mom: (smiling) "Kenta!"
Kenta: (quietly) "Mom."
(She drops the bag and hugs him. Tight. Long.)
Mom: "My baby... you're so thin. Are you eating properly?"
Kenta: (stiff but not pulling away) "I'm fine."
Mom: (pulling back, cupping his face) "Those dark circles. You're still not sleeping."
Kenta: "I sleep."
Mom: (noticing Sui and Yui behind him) "Oh!"
Sui: (bowing deeply) "HELLO! I'M SUI MAKOTO!"
Yui: (also bowing deeply) "I'M MISU YUI! NICE TO MEET YOU!"
Mom: (eyes widening, then smiling warmly) "Kenta... you have friends?"
Kenta: (ears red) "They're... childhood friends."
Mom: "Childhood friends? Both of them?"
Sui: (nodding vigorously) "We knew him when we were kids! At the park!"
Yui: (also nodding) "We played together every day!"
Mom: (thinking) "The park... the sandbox... wait." (Her eyes widen) "You're the girls from his diary!"
Sui & Yui: (in unison, blushing) "We know."
Mom: (confused) "You know?"
Yui: (nodding) "He let us read it."
Sui: (smiling softly) "We saw everything. The sandcastles. The ice cream. The promises."
Mom: (looking at Kenta, surprised) "You SHOWED them?"
Kenta: (looking away, ears red) "They asked."
Mom: (grinning) "My son, sharing his feelings? Progress!"
Kenta: "Mom."
Mom: (grabbing Sui and Yui's hands) "Then you know. You know how much he's always cared."
Sui: (tearing up) "We know."
Yui: (also tearing up) "We know."
Mom: (softening) "Good. That's all I could hope for."

[Scene: Inside - Gifts from Mom]
(They all squeeze into the small room. Mom sits on the bed. Sui and Yui sit on the floor. Kenta stands awkwardly.)
Mom: (looking around) "It's small. But it's clean. You're taking care of yourself."
Kenta: "I manage."
Mom: (opening her large bag) "I brought things!"
(She pulls out container after container.)
Mom: "Homemade croquettes. Pickled vegetables. Rice balls. And..."
(She pulls out a small box. Holds it out to Kenta.)
Kenta: (eyes widening) "Warabimochi?"
Mom: (smiling) "From the shop near our old house. The one you loved as a child."
Kenta: (quietly) "You remembered."
Mom: "I remember everything, my baby."
Sui: (whispering to Yui) "He has a favorite dessert?!"
Yui: (whispering back) "AND HIS MOM KNOWS!"
Mom: (turning to them) "And for you two—"
(She pulls out two small wrapped packages.)
Sui: (surprised) "For US?!"
Yui: (also surprised) "You didn't have to—"
Mom: "Nonsense! Any friend of Kenta's is family!"
(They open them. Matching hair clips. Simple. Beautiful. One soft blue. One soft pink.)
Sui: (tearing up) "They're beautiful..."
Yui: (also tearing up) "We can't accept—"
Mom: (firmly) "You can and you will. Wear them. Make my boy blush."
Kenta: (ears red) "Mom."
Mom: (grinning) "What? It's true!"

[Scene: Eating Together]
(They share the food. Sui and Yui compliment everything. Mom beams.)
Mom: "So tell me about yourselves. How did you find my Kenta again?"
Sui: "I crashed into him in the hallway!"
Yui: "And Kenta-kun accidentally saw me changing!"
Kenta: (choking) "YUI!"
Mom: (laughing hard) "Oh my god! That's how you reunited?! That's amazing!"
Sui: (grinning) "He's always been accident-prone with us!"
Yui: (nodding) "Even as kids! He fell on me once!"
Kenta: "The slide was slippery."
Mom: (wiping a tear) "I can't believe this. My son, surrounded by beautiful girls, reuniting through chaos. It's perfect."
Kenta: "It's not—they're not—"
Mom: (patting his cheek) "Let them talk, dear."

[Scene: Mom's Observation]
(Later. Sui and Yui are washing dishes in the tiny kitchenette. Mom pulls Kenta aside.)
Mom: (quietly) "Kenta."
Kenta: "What?"
Mom: "Those girls. They care about you a lot."
Kenta: (quietly) "I know."
Mom: (surprised) "You know?"
Kenta: "I'm not completely oblivious."
Mom: (smiling) "Then what are you going to do about it?"
Kenta: (pause) "I don't know yet. I'm... figuring it out."
Mom: (hugging him) "Take your time. But don't take too long. Good friends like that are hard to find."
Kenta: (muffled) "I know."
Mom: (pulling back) "They look at you the way your father looked at me."
Kenta: (freezing) "Mom..."
Mom: (softly) "I'm just saying. Don't let them slip away."
Kenta: (nodding) "I won't."

[Scene: Mom's Goodbye]
(Two days have passed. Mom stands at the door, bag packed.)
Mom: "Kenta, eat properly. Sleep properly. And call me more than once a month."
Kenta: "I will."
Mom: (turning to Sui and Yui) "Take care of him. Make sure he eats. Make sure he sleeps. Make sure he smiles."
Sui: (nodding firmly) "We will."
Yui: (also nodding) "Promise."
Mom: (hugging them both) "Thank you. For being there for my boy."
Sui: (tearing up) "We'll always be there."
Yui: (also tearing up) "Always."
Mom: (pulling back, smiling) "I can see why he keeps you around."
Kenta: (ears red) "Mom."
Mom: (laughing) "I'm just saying!"
(She hugs Kenta one last time.)
Mom: (whispering) "They're special. Don't mess it up."
Kenta: (whispering back) "I won't."
Mom: (pulling back) "Love you, baby. Call me!"
(She leaves. The door closes.)
Sui: (wiping eyes) "Your mom is amazing."
Yui: (also wiping) "The best."
Kenta: (quietly) "Yeah."

[Scene: Aftermath - The Hair Clips]
(Sui and Yui look at their hair clips. Matching. From Kenta's mom.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun... we should wear these. Always."
Yui: "To remember her visit."
Kenta: (nodding) "She'd like that."
(Sui puts hers on. Yui puts hers on. They look at each other. Smile.)
Sui: "How do we look?"
Kenta: (looking at them, then looking away) "...Good."
Sui: (grinning) "His ears!"
Yui: (also grinning) "They never lie!"
Sui: (kissing his cheek) "For your mom."
Yui: (kissing his other cheek) "For being her son."
Kenta: (touching his cheeks) "Two more."
Sui: "Count them all!"
Yui: "You'll need a new diary just for kisses!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "Maybe."

[Scene: Walking Home - Later]
(They walk together. Sui and Yui on either side. The hair clips shining.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun... your mom is amazing."
Yui: "She really loves you."
Kenta: "I know."
Sui: "And she approves of us."
Yui: (grinning) "She said we're special!"
Kenta: (ears red) "She says that about everyone."
Sui: (squeezing his hand) "But she meant it. She wants you to be happy."
Kenta: (quietly) "I am happy."
Yui: (softening) "Are you?"
Kenta: (looking at them) "When I'm with you. Yes."
Sui: (tearing up) "Kenta-kun..."
Yui: (also tearing up) "That's enough for now."
(They reach the gate.)
Sui: "Same time tomorrow?"
Kenta: "Library?"
Yui: "Library!"
Sui: "With our hair clips!"
Yui: "Matching!"
Kenta: (almost smiling) "Okay."
(They kiss his cheeks. Quick. Sweet.)
Sui: "Goodnight, Kenta-kun!"
Yui: "Sweet dreams!"
(They run off.)
Kenta: (standing there, touching his cheeks, looking at the stars)
Kenta: (thinking) "Mom was right. They care about me. And I... I care about them too."
(He walks home, smiling.)

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]
(He looks at the leftover warabimochi. The astrolabe. The whiteboard with their drawings still there.)
(His phone buzzes. Two messages.)
Sui: "Kenta-kun! Your mom is the best! Thank you for letting us meet her! We'll treasure these hair clips forever! Sleep well!"
Yui: "My prince~ your mom is amazing! Now we know where you get your kindness from! Goodnight! "
Kenta: (smiling) (typing back to both): "Goodnight. Thank you for being here. For meeting her. For being you. She really liked you both."
(Immediate replies:)
Sui: "HE SAID SHE LIKED US! "
Yui: "MOM APPROVED! PROGRESS! "
Sui: "SWEET DREAMS OUR KENTA-KUN!"
Yui: "DREAM OF US! "
Kenta: (putting down the phone) (looking at the stars through his window)
Kenta: (thinking) "Mom was right. They care about me. And I... I care about them too."
(He closes his eyes, smiling.)
Kenta: (thinking) "I'm not alone anymore. That's enough."
(He falls asleep, happy.)
