Chapter 16 - Cutting Loose ends

By the next day, Jensen slowly rose up from his bed. It been days since he had been able to actually sleep.

He walked through the house until he reached the dining room. The table was laid with well prepared food something he hadn't eaten for years.

Maria made a good spread with part of the money Jensen gave her yesterday.

Jensen sat at the head of the table and immediately dug in.

Maria already had her share before leaving for a name change while Daisaku was still sleeping although his situation had visibly improved even if not by much.

While he was eating, he was also thinking about the next step.

One thing he was sure he had to do was cut off loose ends.

One such loose end was the father of the boy he killed.

While he had been careful when picking his target, he had inevitably asked a few people questions about his target that would no doubt lead to him.

He couldn't necessarily need to stop these people, in fact it was far easier to kill the only person that would want to come after him for revenge, his father.

Daisaku finally woke up.

For a moment, he was confused by the unfamiliar ceiling above him.

His mind felt slow and heavy but then the memories slowly returned.

The betrayal… The battle… His defeat… and then finally, Jensen.

Although he couldn't tell where he was, he understood his situation very clearly.

Daisaku slowly pushed himself up from the bed, the pain spread through his body, but he ignored it and struggled to stand.

Step by step, he made his way through the house toward where he sensed Jensen was.

Honestly, when he surrendered to Jensen, he never expected to survive, in fact he was just taking a gamble more than anything.

Yet now that he was alive, the more he examined his body, the more he wished he had simply died.

Not only was he not as strong as he used to be, but he also would not live much longer.

Even worse, the more he used his power, the faster his life would burn away.

The more he thought about it, the heavier his heart became. Sadness slowly turned into anger.

There was no way he would allow that foolish son of his, Daihachi, to inherit his legacy.

There was also no way he would allow the XR gang's plan to succeed.

Eventually, he reached the dining room.

Jensen was sitting at the table, calmly eating the meal in front of him.

Without saying anything, Daisaku walked over and sat down on the right side of the table.

He bowed his head slightly toward Jensen.

"Thank you very much for saving me."

Jensen glanced at him briefly before returning to his food.

"My pleasure," he said calmly.

He then pointed at the food on the table.

"Please feel free to dig in."

Daisaku nodded and immediately began eating to be honest he was famished and starving.

For a while, the two men simply ate in silence but after some time, Jensen finally spoke.

"What do you plan to do now?"

Daisaku paused for a moment before smiling faintly, "I plan to make those bastards suffer."

And that was all he said before returning to his meal.

Once he finished eating, he politely excused himself from the table.

He went to wash up and took a long bath. Afterward, he changed into a clean set of clothes taken from his spatial ring.

When he returned, he walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned toward Jensen. "Thank you for your hospitality."

Jensen gave a small nod. Daisaku hesitated for a moment before asking a question.

"With how powerful you are, why do you live here?" He quickly raised a hand as if to clarify.

"I'm not saying this place is bad," he said. "But I'm sure someone like you could do much better."

Jensen understood immediately, the old man was trying to recruit him.

Still, Jensen simply nodded.

"I understand your concern," he said calmly. "But this is just one of the properties the Morvath Family owns."

He took another bite of food before continuing. "It just happens to be the closest one to the gate."

Daisaku's eyes narrowed slightly. 'The Morvath Family?' He had never heard of such a family before.

But in the end, he didn't ask any more questions as he turned around and left.

Edward slowly walked out of the skyrise building behind him, which had a massive "B" logo on its front.

He stopped for a moment and turned around to look up at it.

A long sigh escaped his mouth.

He had been one of the lucky ones who managed to build a family legacy, at least that was what most people believed.

But only he knew the truth.

His younger brother had been the real brain behind the operation, while Edward had simply been the face of the company.

After his brother's death, Edward had struggled to expand the business the way his brother once did, but he had failed.

Now his niece was beginning to show the same talent her father once had.

Edward had already noticed it during the last few meetings that most of the investors were slowly gravitating toward her.

That thought irritated him and he used to clench his jaw tightly every time he thought about it.

After all he had done, he knew his son would still live a comfortable life no matter what happened to the company.

But Edward didn't want his son to live an average life.

'No father wanted that.'

So, he had done everything he could to suppress his niece, even though she was family, while pushing his own son forward.

Unfortunately, it seemed the business talent had only passed down through his brother's branch of the family.

Edward had even gone as far as interfering with her marriage prospects.

He publicly claimed he would only allow her to marry for true love, saying that it was what her father would have wanted for her.

In reality, he simply wanted to prevent her from forming powerful alliances.

Thankfully, his son had finally awakened a path. The Mind Path.

Edward had immediately bought him a Mind Path skill and hired a mercenary group to escort him while he trained.

At the same time, Edward began arranging a marriage alliance between his son and the daughter of a high official in Oakland Town.

Everything had finally begun to fall into place but now…

Now none of it mattered.

He had not been able to contact his son for several days.

Even the mercenary guild couldn't help with contacting the mercenaries.

At this point, it was almost certain that his son had died.

More than anything, Edward hoped it was a kidnapping.

At least then the kidnappers would eventually demand a ransom, but the more days passed, the less likely that seemed.

Edward had investigated as much as he could.

Rumours even reached him that several Level 4s had fought a battle in the same forest where his son had been.

If his son had died in the aftermath of that fight, then there was nothing he could do.

But he wanted someone to pay, he wanted some he could touch to be responsible.

Which was why he kept digging for answers.

Suddenly, a young man brushed past him, but Edward barely noticed.

He continued walking toward his luxury hover car.

He stopped beside it and stared at it for a moment.

'Perhaps I should walk,' he thought. 'I really need the breeze to calm me down.'

He closed the car door after placing his suitcase inside. 'It's been so long since I've taken a walk.'

Edward turned around and began walking down the street.

At first, he only planned to walk for a few minutes, but he kept going and half an hour passed before he realized how far he had gone.

To his surprise, he was still able to walk comfortably, although he felt slightly tired, the cool air made it feel refreshing.

'Maybe I should call my ride soon,' he thought.

He turned a corner, suddenly, a sharp pain exploded through his chest.

Edward looked down in shock as a blade had pierced straight through his chest.

He tried to struggle, but the attacker stabbed him again and again.

The world around him spun as he collapsed onto the ground.

The assailant quickly searched his body, taking his wallet and personal belongings before running off.

Edward lay there, staring up at the sky as his vision slowly grew darker.

'Seriously… A robbery… this is how I die?'
