Chapter 11 - Chapter Eleven: The Weight of the Heart

The Heart of Balance pulsed brighter as the army advanced.

Each glow sent ripples of warmth and frost across the plateau, as if the crystal itself could feel the approaching danger.

Aeralyn stood beside it, her fingers hovering just above the glowing surface.

It hummed beneath her hand.

Alive.

Ancient.

And impossibly heavy—not in weight, but in responsibility.

Behind her, the thunder of marching constructs echoed across the valley.

They were coming faster now.

Hundreds of them.

Ice soldiers, towering giants, and the massive Sentinel of the First Winter leading them all.

Rovan looked over the ridge again and let out a low whistle.

"They're making good time."

Lysa nocked an arrow.

"That's one way to say we're about to be buried under an avalanche of monsters."

Teren nervously checked the bandage on his arm.

"I vote we run."

Caelum stepped beside Aeralyn.

His expression was calm, but his eyes reflected the same tension she felt.

"We are running," he said.

"But first, we move the Heart."

Aeralyn looked back at the crystal.

"Alright," she said quietly.

"How do we carry something that powerful?"

Caelum lifted both hands.

Frost gathered in the air around him, swirling slowly like a forming storm. The ground beneath the Heart began to glow faintly as he focused his power.

"Carefully."

The ice beneath the crystal rose upward, shaping itself into a smooth pedestal of frozen stone. Slowly, gently, the Heart lifted from its resting place.

The moment it moved, the wind screamed.

Across the valley, the Sentinel stopped walking.

Its enormous head turned toward the plateau.

And then it roared.

The sound shook the mountains.

"They noticed," Teren said weakly.

"No kidding," Rovan muttered.

The constructs surged forward, their march becoming a charge.

Snow exploded beneath their feet as they rushed toward the mountain.

Caelum strained slightly as the floating crystal stabilized in the air before him.

"Once we start moving," he said, "I won't be able to fight."

Aeralyn nodded.

"Then we'll handle that part."

She turned toward the others.

"We hold them off long enough to reach the southern path."

Rovan grinned and spun his spear once in his hands.

"Now that's a plan I understand."

Lysa released her first arrow.

It flew across the valley and shattered against the chest of a charging construct, exploding into shards of ice.

"Let's not stand here discussing it all day," she said calmly.

The battle began.

---

The first wave reached the base of the plateau in minutes.

Massive ice creatures climbed the rocky slopes, clawing their way upward with terrifying speed.

Aeralyn stepped forward.

Warm golden magic flared around her hands as she slammed her palm into the snow.

A shockwave of heat blasted outward.

The nearest constructs cracked instantly, their frozen bodies splintering apart as the sudden warmth disrupted their magic.

"Move!" she shouted.

Caelum began walking down the narrow mountain path, the Heart floating before him like a small star.

Teren followed close behind, glancing nervously over his shoulder.

Rovan stayed near the front, blocking the narrow trail with his spear.

The first construct reached him.

It swung a massive frozen arm.

Rovan ducked and drove his spear upward, shattering the creature's chest in a burst of ice fragments.

"Next!" he barked.

Lysa's arrows flew continuously, striking the climbing enemies before they could reach the path.

But there were too many.

More constructs crawled up the mountainside, their glowing eyes burning with ancient purpose.

"They just keep coming!" Teren shouted.

Caelum didn't look back.

"They will not stop."

Aeralyn ran beside him, casting bursts of warmth behind them to slow the advancing army.

Her magic clashed violently with the cold filling the valley.

The air hissed and steamed where their powers collided.

Far below them, the Sentinel continued its march.

Each step shook the mountains.

Its glowing eyes never left the floating Heart.

---

Halfway down the mountain path, disaster struck.

The Sentinel raised its arm.

The sky darkened instantly.

A storm exploded above the mountain.

Blinding snow and razor-sharp wind tore across the cliffs, shaking loose chunks of ice and rock.

The narrow path began to crumble.

"We're losing the trail!" Lysa shouted.

Rovan grabbed Teren's arm and pulled him away from a collapsing edge.

"This thing is bringing the whole mountain down!"

Caelum staggered slightly as the storm intensified.

Moving the Heart was draining his strength quickly.

Aeralyn saw it immediately.

His breathing was heavier.

Frost no longer flowed smoothly around him—it flickered, unstable.

She grabbed his arm.

"You're pushing too hard."

"We must reach the valley," he replied.

"Or the Heart will be destroyed here."

Another tremor split the path.

A massive construct leapt onto the cliff ahead of them, blocking their way.

Rovan charged forward.

His spear slammed into the creature's leg, cracking the ice but not breaking it.

The construct swung its arm.

Rovan barely dodged the blow.

"Little help!" he shouted.

Aeralyn raised both hands.

Golden light erupted outward like a miniature sunrise.

The blast shattered the construct into a rain of ice shards.

But the effort made her stumble.

Too much magic.

Too quickly.

Caelum steadied her.

"For someone exhausted," he said quietly, "you're remarkably stubborn."

She gave him a tired smile.

"I'm not letting an ancient snow monster ruin our day."

Behind them, the Sentinel finally reached the base of the mountain.

It looked up.

And began climbing.

Teren paled.

"That thing is climbing the mountain."

Rovan looked down and sighed.

"Well… that's unfortunate."

Lysa drew another arrow.

"We need to move faster."

Caelum nodded.

"The valley is close."

Through the storm, the group could finally see the frozen forest below the mountain ridge.

Just a little farther.

Aeralyn felt the Heart pulsing stronger now, reacting to the approaching threat.

The Sentinel roared again.

The sound echoed through the blizzard like the voice of winter itself.

Caelum tightened his focus, guiding the crystal down the last stretch of the path.

"Almost there," he said.

But Aeralyn could feel it.

The storm was growing stronger.

And the Sentinel was getting closer.

The final battle was coming.

And the Heart of Balance was right in the middle of it.
