Chapter 18 - Chapter 18:Bombs, Wizards and Bad vibes

Deep Forest – Survivor Camp

The forest had grown darker as Elena and the kids continued walking.

Branches snapped beneath their tired feet. The sun was now high in the sky, but the dense canopy allowed only thin beams of light to reach the ground.

Daniel walked beside his mother, holding the strap of her bag.

"Do you think Sam will find us?" he asked quietly.

Elena didn't answer immediately.

She didn't want to lie.

But she also didn't want to take away the children's hope.

"…Sam is strong," she finally said gently. "If anyone can survive out there, it's him."

Lily looked back toward the direction they had come from.

The valley was far behind them now.

Too far.

After another hour of walking, the forest finally opened into a clearing.

Smoke rose into the sky.

Wooden structures stood between the trees.

Dozens of survivors moved around a rough camp surrounded by sharpened wooden stakes.

Elena slowed.

"…People."

Several guards spotted them immediately.

Crossbows were raised.

"Hold it!" one man shouted.

Elena quickly lifted her hands.

"We're not hostile!"

Daniel and Lily stood close beside her.

The guards approached cautiously.

Then a deeper voice spoke from behind them.

"Relax, boys."

The guards stepped aside.

A tall man stepped forward.

He wore a strange brown animal hat made from what looked like bear fur. His clothes were simple but durable, and a large axe rested across his back.

He studied Elena and the children carefully.

"Well now," he said casually. "Looks like the forest spat out some new survivors."

Elena nodded respectfully.

"My name is Elena. These are my children, Lily and Daniel. We had to leave our shelter after monsters tracked us."

The man scratched his beard thoughtfully.

"Monsters are kinda the forest's thing these days."

Then he smiled slightly.

"But you made it here, so that's something."

He turned to the guards.

"Lower the weapons."

They obeyed.

The man gestured toward the camp.

"Name's Brann. I run this place."

He adjusted the animal hat proudly.

"We keep the monsters out and the people alive."

Daniel looked around the camp in awe.

"…This place is huge."

Brann chuckled.

"Been building it for a while."

He looked back at Elena.

"You and the kids can stay. Anyone who survives the forest deserves a warm meal."

Elena felt a wave of relief.

"…Thank you."

Brann nodded.

"Just don't wander too far outside the walls."

His tone became serious.

"There's things out there that don't like humans much."

Meanwhile – Dungeon Depths

The cavern shook.

Stone exploded across the floor as Sam rolled behind a pillar.

One of the four-armed dungeon creatures slammed its fists into the ground where he had been standing.

BOOM.

Sam popped up from behind the pillar.

"Okay... wow. You guys hit hard."

The creature roared.

Another one charged from the side.

Sam jumped backwards and launched a lightning bolt.

CRACK!

The electricity struck the monster's chest—

But it only staggered slightly.

Sam blinked.

"…Oh."

He rubbed his chin mid-battle.

"Equal strength monsters."

The three creatures advanced slowly.

Their stone skin cracked slightly as green energy pulsed beneath the surface.

Sam grinned suddenly.

"Alright then."

He held up his hand.

Three mana spheres formed in the air.

Small glowing blue orbs.

Then

He added telekinesis.

The spheres floated around him like tiny satellites.

Sam pointed at the monsters.

"Remote control bombs."

He flicked his finger.

The first sphere shot forward.

The creature tried to swat it.

Too late.

BOOM.

A bright blue explosion blasted its arm clean off.

The monster roared.

Sam laughed.

"Oh man that worked!"

The second sphere curved through the air like a guided missile.

BOOM.

Another explosion shattered the monster's shoulder.

The third creature lunged.

Sam slid under it and launched two more spheres.

BOOM.

BOOM.

The cavern echoed with magical explosions.

Dust filled the air.

When it cleared—

Two monsters were down.

The last one staggered forward with cracked stone skin.

Sam cracked his knuckles.

"You're tough… but I've got like… a million ideas."

The monster charged.

Sam jumped forward.

Lightning wrapped around his fist.

CRACK.

The punch shattered its skull.

The creature collapsed.

Sam breathed out slowly.

"…Dungeon training is great."

But then—

The ground trembled.

A deeper roar echoed somewhere far below the ruins.

Sam looked toward the dark tunnels stretching deeper into the dungeon maze.

"…Nope."

He turned and jogged down another corridor.

"I'm exploring first before fighting the dungeon boss.", he continued exploring deeper.

Deeper in the Dungeon

The maze twisted endlessly.

Ancient stone corridors turned in strange directions.

Some walls were covered in glowing moss.

Others had strange magical symbols carved into them.

Sam turned a corner,

And stopped.

Someone stood there.

A tall figure wearing a dark cloak.

The hood completely hid their face.

The figure held a crooked wooden staff.

Sam blinked.

"…Oh."

The cloaked figure tilted their head slowly.

"Ah."

Their voice was strange.

Almost cheerful.

"A mortal wandering the lower maze. That is unusual."

Sam crossed his arms.

"Yeah. Same question for you."

The cloaked figure tapped their staff on the ground.

"Just a humble traveler."

Sam raised an eyebrow.

"Inside a magical dungeon?"

"…Yes."

They paused.

"…I enjoy caves."

Sam stared at them.

"…You're weird bro ."

The figure suddenly lifted their staff.

A strange magical glyph appeared in the air.

Sam's system window flashed violently.

Sam sighed.

"Man."

He pointed at the cloaked wizard.

"You're in a cult, aren't you?"

The wizard sounded offended.

"Excuse me."

"It is not a cult."

Sam waited.

The wizard continued.

"…It is a mystical philosophical society devoted to the awakening of the ancient god Concanteppi."

Sam stared.

"…That's a cult."

The wizard raised their staff.

"Prepare yourself, intruder."

Magical runes formed in the air.

Sam rolled his shoulders.

Lightning sparked along his hands.

"Well this dungeon just got interesting."

The wizard fired the first spell.

A screaming skull made of green magic shot across the corridor.

Sam ducked.

It exploded behind him.

Sam grinned.

"Oh wow you've got spooky wizard magic."

The cultist pointed dramatically.

"And you have barbaric lightning!"

Sam launched three mana spheres.

"Let's compare."

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

The corridor exploded with chaotic magic.

The wizard jumped behind a pillar.

"This is highly unprofessional combat etiquette!"

Sam laughed.

"You started it!"

The dungeon trembled with their battle.

And somewhere deeper in the ruins…

Something ancient was waking up.
