The dungeon corridor had become a mess of shattered stone and glowing magical residue.
Smoke drifted lazily through the air.
Sam stood on one side of the ruined hallway, lightning dancing across his fingertips.
Across from him, the cloaked wizard leaned against a cracked pillar, their crooked staff glowing with eerie green energy.
Both of them were breathing slightly harder now.
Sam wiped dust from his shoulder.
"You know," he said casually, "for a guy in a spooky ancient cult, you're actually pretty fun to fight."
The wizard adjusted their hood indignantly.
"Fun?!"
They slammed their staff into the floor.
"I am a disciple of Concanteppi, seeker of forbidden truths and cosmic enlightenment!"
Sam scratched his chin.
"…That's a lot of titles."
The wizard raised a finger dramatically.
"You will show proper respect to.. "
Sam launched a mana sphere.
The wizard yelped and dove behind a rock.
BOOM.
Stone exploded everywhere.
"You keep talking," Sam said, grinning, "and I keep throwing bombs."
The wizard peeked out from behind the rubble.
"That is extremely rude wizard etiquette."
They suddenly thrust their staff forward.
A glowing green skull spirit burst from the staff and screamed toward Sam.
Sam blinked.
"Oh hey spooky ghost!"
The Demon Eye Sword instantly reacted.
The blade flashed red.
Sam swung it once.
The skull spirit vanished with a loud pop.
The wizard gasped.
"…You have a spirit-killing blade."
Sam pointed the sword casually.
"Dungeon loot."
The wizard's voice suddenly sounded nervous.
"That… complicates things."
Sam shrugged.
"Yeah."
He summoned five mana spheres this time.
They floated around his head like angry fireflies.
The wizard panicked slightly.
"That is far too many bombs!"
Sam snapped his fingers.
The spheres shot forward.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
The wizard desperately threw up a magical barrier.
Green energy cracked and splintered as the explosions battered the shield.
Sam ran forward through the smoke.
Lightning wrapped around his fist.
The wizard barely blocked with their staff.
CRACK.
The impact sent them sliding across the stone floor.
The wizard groaned.
"Barbaric lightning man…"
Sam walked forward.
"You cult guys always this dramatic?"
The wizard pushed themselves up slowly.
"…Usually yes."
Then suddenly,
The dungeon trembled.
Both of them froze.
A deep sound echoed through the tunnels.
A massive roar.
Stone dust fell from the ceiling.
Sam slowly looked down the dark corridor behind the wizard.
"…Uh."
The wizard also turned around.
"…Oh."
The roar came again.
Louder this time.
The ground shook violently.
Something enormous was moving through the deeper ruins.
Sam lowered his sword slightly.
"…You wake something up?"
The wizard pointed back at him.
"You were the one throwing bombs!"
Another rumble shook the entire dungeon.
Then
CRASH.
The far wall of the corridor exploded inward.
Stone shattered everywhere.
A gigantic creature forced its way into the chamber.
It was enormous.
At least six meters tall.
A grotesque stone and flesh monster, like the dungeon itself had grown muscles and teeth.
Four glowing eyes burned in its skull-like face.
Its arms were massive slabs of living rock.
And chains hung from its body as if something had once tried to imprison it.
Sam stared.
"…Okay that's new."
The wizard whispered in horror.
"…That is a Dungeon Warden."
The monster roared again.
The sound shook the entire ruin.
Sam looked at the wizard.
"So."
The wizard looked at Sam.
"…Temporary truce?"
The monster smashed its fist into the floor.
The shockwave knocked both of them off their feet.
Sam rolled back up, lightning already sparking around him.
He grinned.
"Yeah."
"Let's kill the big guy first."
The wizard pointed their staff dramatically.
"Very well, lightning barbarian!"
Green magical fire exploded from the staff.
Sam launched a barrage of mana spheres.
The Dungeon Warden roared as both attacks slammed into its chest.
The battle had just escalated as the Dungeon Warden roared.
The sound shook the entire cavern like thunder trapped underground. Chunks of stone rained from the ceiling as the massive creature stepped forward, chains clanking along its body.
Its four glowing eyes locked onto Sam and the cloaked wizard.
Sam slowly backed up a step.
"…That thing is huge."
The wizard nodded stiffly.
"Yes. It is also extremely angry."
The Warden swung one arm.
The stone fist smashed into the ground.
BOOOOM.
The shockwave blasted both of them backward.
Sam rolled across the stone floor and sprang up again, lightning already flickering across his hands.
"Alright," he said, cracking his neck. "Teamwork time."
The wizard raised their staff dramatically.
"I refuse to die in a sewer dungeon alongside a lightning barbarian!"
Sam blinked.
"…That sounds like a yes."
The Warden charged.
Each step cracked the ancient floor.
Sam launched three mana spheres immediately.
"Catch!"
The spheres shot forward.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
Blue explosions slammed into the Warden's chest.
The monster barely flinched.
It kept coming.
The wizard thrust their staff forward.
"SKULL OF MALCONTENT!"
A glowing green ghost skull burst forward and slammed into the Warden's face.
The monster staggered slightly.
Sam grinned.
"Oh that actually worked!"
The wizard shouted back.
"Of course it worked! It is a classic wizard spell!"
The Warden roared again and swung its arm.
Sam jumped aside.
The fist smashed into the wall instead.
CRASH.
The entire corridor partially collapsed.
Dust filled the air.
Sam slid behind a pillar.
"Okay new plan!"
The wizard ducked another attack.
"Yes please!"
Sam pointed down the corridor.
"We run."
The wizard paused.
"…That is not a heroic strategy."
Sam created six mana spheres.
They floated around his head like glowing planets.
He smiled.
"It's called strategic cowardice."
The Warden smashed another pillar.
Stone exploded everywhere.
The wizard yelled.
"Fine! Strategic cowardice!"
Sam snapped his fingers.
All six mana spheres shot toward the Warden.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
A massive cloud of dust and debris filled the corridor.
Sam grabbed the wizard's cloak.
"RUN!"
They bolted down the maze-like tunnels.
Behind them
The Warden burst through the dust cloud like a living avalanche.
The monster roared again.
The entire dungeon trembled as it chased them.
Sam sprinted through twisting corridors.
Left turn.
Right turn.
Another staircase.
The wizard struggled to keep up.
"You run disturbingly fast!"
Sam yelled back.
"Lightning legs!"
The Warden smashed through walls behind them.
The dungeon was literally collapsing as it followed their trail.
Stone pillars cracked.
Floors shattered.
Water poured from broken channels.
They reached a huge chamber with multiple tunnels.
Sam skidded to a stop.
"Split paths!"
The wizard pointed dramatically to the left.
"That way leads deeper into the ruins!"
Sam pointed right.
"That way looks less explode-y!"
Behind them
The Warden burst through the corridor wall.
ROOOOAAAR.
Sam grabbed the wizard again.
"We go right!"
They sprinted down the new tunnel.
The corridor narrowed sharply.
The Warden smashed into the entrance but got partially stuck between the stone walls.
The monster roared in fury.
It tried forcing its way forward,
But the tunnel was too small.
Sam and the wizard collapsed against the far wall, breathing hard.
The monster roared behind them but couldn't follow.
Finally…
Silence returned.
Sam wiped sweat from his forehead.
"…Okay."
The wizard leaned on their staff.
"…Strategic cowardice was wise."
Sam laughed.
"Told you."
The wizard slowly turned toward him.
"You are surprisingly effective for someone who throws bombs at everything."
Sam crossed his arms proudly.
"It's called creativity."
The wizard adjusted their cloak.
"…Lightning barbarian."
Sam pointed at them.
"Cult wizard."
They stared at each other.
Then the wizard sighed.
"For the moment… truce remains acceptable."
Sam nodded.
"Good."
He looked deeper into the dungeon corridor ahead.
The tunnel stretched further down into ancient darkness.
More ruins.
More secrets.
More monsters.
Sam smiled.
"Well."
He cracked his knuckles.
"Let's see what else this dungeon's hiding."
And far above the dungeon…
The magical world of Ooo continued slowly awakening.
