Chapter 17 - Chapter 17:The sewer that shouldnt exist

Morning sunlight stretched across the broken valley as Sam ran through the tall grass.

The world was quiet again.

Too quiet.

Ruined buildings leaned at strange angles along the outskirts of what used to be a small town, and the wind carried the faint smell of stagnant water from the underground sewer lines running beneath the valley.

Sam moved quickly across the cracked road.

His footsteps were light despite his size, his body now far stronger than it had been when this whole journey started. Every stride covered nearly eight meters, and he barely felt tired even after running for several minutes.

He stopped when he reached an abandoned drainage canal.

The ground here was wet.

Dark slime covered the broken concrete walls.

Sam crouched down, studying the ground.

"…Oozers."

Fresh ones.

The slime trails were thick and recent.

He cracked his neck slightly and rolled his shoulders.

"Well… let's get today's workout started."

• 2 Stat Points

• EXP based on enemy strength

Progress: 0 / 10

---

Sam stepped down into the canal.

The moment his boots splashed into the shallow water—

Something moved.

The slime along the walls bulged.

Then three Oozer mutants crawled out of the drainage pipe ahead.

They were larger than the ones he fought days ago.

Their bodies were swollen masses of black-green sludge with distorted human limbs pushing through the gelatinous mass.

One of them screeched.

Sam sighed.

"Yep. Definitely oozers."

The first one lunged.

Sam stepped forward.

CRACK.

His fist smashed straight through its skull.

The creature collapsed into sludge instantly.

---

EXP GAINED

+160 EXP

Daily Task Progress: 1 / 10

---

Two more attacked at once.

Sam bent his knees slightly.

Electric sparks flickered along his fingers.

"Let's try something."

Lightning gathered around his hand.

He swung his arm outward.

CRACK!

A thin bolt of lightning shot across the canal, exploding through both monsters at once.

The oozers convulsed violently before collapsing into smoking sludge.

---

EXP GAINED

+320 EXP

Daily Task Progress: 3 / 10

---

Sam scratched his chin thoughtfully.

"Storm magic still feels kinda cool."

He kept moving deeper into the drainage system.

The sewer tunnels beneath the valley were old, wide concrete corridors where stagnant water flowed slowly through cracked channels.

More oozers lurked in the darkness.

But to Sam now…

They weren't much of a threat.

He moved like a predator.

Punches enhanced with mana shattered mutated skulls.

Lightning bolts blasted through clusters of slime creatures.

His sword occasionally flashed when a larger oozer appeared.

Within thirty minutes—

---

"Nice."

But then—

The system window flickered.

A different notification appeared.

---

Sam slowly looked down the sewer tunnel.

A faint blue glow flickered somewhere deeper underground.

The air had changed.

The temperature felt colder.

The smell of magic was strong.

Sam smiled.

"Well… that's new."

He began walking deeper into the sewer.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

The tunnel widened as he moved forward.

Eventually the sewer opened into a massive underground chamber where several drainage pipes converged.

And in the center of the room,

Space itself was tearing open.

A swirling blue magical portal floated above the water.

Ancient runes spun slowly around it.

The stone walls nearby had grown strange glowing moss.

The air hummed with power.

Sam stared at it.

"…That definitely wasn't here yesterday."

The portal pulsed softly.

Something moved inside the swirling magic.

Something big.

Sam rested his hand on the Demon Eye Sword.

His grin slowly returned.

"Well."

He rolled his shoulders.

"Guess today just got interesting."

And somewhere deep inside that portal…

Something ancient was waiting.

Sam entered the portal and ended up in a underground chamber

The underground chamber was quiet.

Too quiet.

Cold water dripped from cracked concrete pipes high above as the glowing blue portal slowly rotated in the center of the sewer chamber. Strange runes circled it like tiny moons orbiting a star.

Sam stood a few meters away, studying it carefully.

The air around the portal felt… heavier.

Magical.

The faint electric sensation on his skin told him the rift wasn't natural. Something beyond this world had punched a hole through reality itself.

He crouched down near the water's edge and watched the glowing vortex.

"…First dungeon," he muttered.

The portal pulsed again.

Inside the swirling light, shadowy shapes shifted for just a moment before vanishing back into the magical fog.

Sam slowly drew the Demon Eye Sword.

The blade hummed faintly as if reacting to the portal.

"Guess we're doing this."

He stepped forward.

The moment his foot crossed the glowing threshold

The world bent.

Reality twisted like water swirling down a drain.

Light stretched into strange ribbons around him.

And then—

Everything snapped back into place.

Sam looked around slowly.

"…Whoa."

The sewer was gone.

Instead, he stood inside a massive underground cavern filled with ancient ruins.

Stone pillars rose from the ground like broken teeth.

Bioluminescent mushrooms grew along the walls, glowing softly with blue and purple light.

A shallow river flowed through the center of the cavern.

Ancient stairs carved into the rock led downward into darkness.

Sam's footsteps echoed softly as he moved forward.

Everything felt old.

Older than human civilization.

The air smelled of moss, wet stone… and magic.

He placed a hand against one of the pillars.

Strange symbols had been carved into it.

"…This place is ancient."

Somewhere deeper in the cavern—

Something growled.

Sam smiled slightly.

"Nice."

He walked deeper into the dungeon.

---

Meanwhile on The Surface

The valley had grown quiet again.

Inside the abandoned grocery store, Elena finished packing the last few supplies into a small backpack.

The children were helping gather blankets and food cans.

Daniel looked toward the door.

"Do you think Sam found more monsters?"

Elena smiled softly.

"Probably."

Lily asked quietly,

"When will he come back?"

Elena glanced toward the hills outside.

"He said before nightfall."

She hoped that was true.

But something in the air felt… wrong.

The wind had stopped again.

Then—

A distant howl echoed through the valley.

Elena froze.

Daniel looked up.

"What was that?"

Another howl answered.

Closer this time.

Elena's heart sank.

Slowly she walked toward the broken doorway of the store and looked outside.

Movement.

Large shapes moved through the tall grass.

Then she saw them clearly.

Wolves.

But not normal wolves.

These creatures were nearly the size of horses.

Their fur shimmered faintly with magical energy, and glowing blue eyes scanned the ruins.

One of them lifted its head.

It sniffed the air.

Then it looked directly toward the store.

Elena's stomach dropped.

"…They smell us."

The children rushed to the door.

Lily gasped.

"There's so many…"

At least six magical wolves slowly surrounded the building.

Daniel whispered nervously,

"Where's Sam…"

Elena forced herself to stay calm.

"Sam's not here right now."

She grabbed the children's hands.

"We have to move."

The wolves began circling closer.

One growled.

Its teeth were far too large.

Elena quickly grabbed the backpacks.

"We run for the trees."

Daniel swallowed.

"Right now?"

"Yes."

The wolves were moving faster now.

Their glowing eyes locked onto the building.

Elena took a deep breath.

Then she pushed the kids toward the back door of the store.

"Stay close to me."

They burst out into the open field.

The wolves reacted instantly.

A loud chorus of howls exploded across the valley.

The hunt had begun.

Elena ran as fast as she could toward the distant tree line.

Daniel and Lily sprinted beside her.

Behind them—

The magical wolves gave chase.

The valley echoed with the sound of pounding paws.

Branches snapped.

Grass tore beneath running feet.

Elena pushed herself harder than she ever had before.

Finally—

They reached the forest.

The trees were thick.

Dense.

The wolves slowed slightly as the humans disappeared between the trunks.

Elena didn't stop running.

They moved deeper into the woods until the howls finally faded into the distance.

Eventually Elena collapsed against a tree, breathing hard.

Daniel sat beside her.

Lily hugged her tightly.

They were safe.

For now.

But the valley was far behind them.

And the forest stretched endlessly in every direction.

Sam would return to the store later that night…

And find it empty.

---

Deep Within the Dungeon

Sam stepped carefully down the ancient stone stairs.

Water dripped slowly along the walls.

The deeper he went, the stronger the magical energy became.

Then he reached a massive chamber.

In the center stood a stone altar covered in glowing runes.

And guarding it—

Three creatures slowly crawled from the darkness.

Stone-skinned.

Four-armed.

With glowing green eyes.

Sam cracked his knuckles.

"…Dungeon monsters."

Lightning flickered along his fingers.

His grin returned.

"Let's see what kind of EXP you guys give."

Far above the dungeon…

The world continued changing.

And Sam had no idea that the people he had just begun to care about…

Were already gone.
