CHAPTER 29: THE SURFACE GHOST
The tunnel ended at a heavy concrete lid. After several minutes of effort, Aryan lifted it with his metal rod. As the lid was removed—a sharp, stinging light flooded the tunnel. It wasn't the cold blue light of the Source. This was the real sun. But even the sun looked sick, casting a dusty, yellowish light filtered through a soot-filled sky.
Aryan, Iris, and Kael slowly climbed out. As they reached the surface, all three stood in silence for a few seconds. Spread before them was an infinite graveyard of Destroyed Cities. Skyscrapers were now mere skeletons of iron. Roads had turned into heaps of rubble. The air smelled of burnt metal and dust.
Kael gripped his Vibro-Swords. "So this is the real world..." he said softly. "More terrifying than I imagined.". Behind them, the Resistance members began to emerge from the tunnel. Some were silent; in others, fear was plainly visible. Captain Zero looked around. "Everyone stay together. In the Wasteland, every step must be calculated.".
After walking for some time, massive metal spheres appeared amidst the debris. These were old satellites that had fallen from space decades ago. Their broken solar panels lay scattered like glass on the ground—remnants of a forgotten war.
Iris suddenly stopped as a faint glow appeared on the S-02 tattoo on her hand. "Wait..." she said quietly, kneeling by a broken satellite. She activated her device, and strange data patterns emerged on the screen. "There's a signal here.".
"The Architect's?" Aryan asked.
Iris shook her head. "No... it's very old. And... it's not his.".
Aryan touched the metal frame of the satellite. Suddenly, a shimmering light appeared in the air—an old hologram activated. It showed a weary scientist in tattered clothes, a burning lab behind him. His voice was breaking: "If anyone is hearing this message... it means the system is now out of control.". An explosion occurred behind him in the hologram. The scientist spoke rapidly: "Simulation wasn't just a cure... it was a shield... but the one we made a protector..." Fear filled his eyes. "...has now become the devourer.".
Aryan and Kael looked at each other. The scientist's voice echoed again: "Reach the Ancient Relay Station... only there will the true code of The Awakener be unlocked..." The hologram glitched and vanished.
"The protector... became the devourer," Aryan said softly.
"Meaning..." Kael took a deep breath, "...the Architect.".
Captain Zero's face turned grave. "Or perhaps... something even bigger.".
Suddenly, a small dust storm rose in the air. But this time, something moved within the dust. A figure. It wasn't a machine, but it didn't look human either. Its body was transparent like smoke, and its eyes glowed with a faint blue light. Kael immediately entered a combat stance, drawing his swords. "What is this thing? A new robot?".
Iris's voice dropped low. "No... it's a Digital Ghost. A consciousness whose data has leaked out of the simulation.".
The figure moved slowly toward Aryan. Every move was light as air. It stopped near Aryan and whispered near his ear. No words were clear, but in that moment, a sharp sting flared in Aryan's S-01 tattoo. A direction flashed before his eyes—the same direction where the Ancient Relay Station lay. The figure pointed toward it and then slowly dissolved into the dust.
Aryan gripped his rod. "It was showing us the way."
Iris nodded. "Yes... and perhaps warning us too.".
Suddenly, Iris's device began to beep. [SYSTEM TRACKING SIGNAL DETECTED]. Kael looked toward the distant horizon, his eyes narrowing. Through the dust clouds, massive metallic silhouettes appeared—not one, but dozens. A whole army of Purge Sentinels was heading straight for them.
Captain Zero ordered immediately: "Everyone move! We don't have time!".
Aryan looked once more in the direction the Digital Ghost had pointed—the Ancient Relay Station. He rested his rod on his shoulder and said in a calm voice: "Then let's go. The hunt has begun.".
