Karl's teasing was the one thing Di Wu couldn't tolerate.
It was the first time Karl had mocked her, and she felt like she was about to explode.
"Why did I have to go blind back then?!"
Karl gently smoothed her furrowed brows."I just remembered some things from the past."
His words lingered in the room.
The topic had shifted so abruptly that it made no sense at all.
Di Wan froze for a moment, then widened her eyes and looked at Karl in a strangely cute way. She just stared at him without saying anything.
"Hah!"
Karl seemed amused.
"So what are you going to do after hearing my story?"
Di Wan finally spoke.
"Then tell me your story."
She had always wanted to know more about Karl, but he had never mentioned anything about his past. Long ago he had said he couldn't remember it.
Now that he had suddenly recalled something, she naturally wanted to know more.
Recently Karl's personality had begun to change as well, which probably had something to do with recovering his memories.
Karl quietly looked at Di Wu.
For the first time, many emotions appeared in his eyes—things he had never shown before, perhaps things he had never even been able to express.
"I… actually…"
He paused, then sighed.
"Forget it."
He turned over and lay down with his back facing her.
Di Wu immediately felt uncomfortable.
Why bring it up if you weren't going to say it?
It was like making someone hungry and then refusing to serve the food.
"You—!"
She raised her hand and slapped Karl's back.
"Why are you suddenly like this? I'm waiting for your story. You bring it up and then refuse to say anything? What am I supposed to do? Just sleep without hearing it? Hurry up, I want to hear the story!"
Karl remained silent with his back toward her.
"Hey!"
"Say it already. I swear… if I had a knife right now I'd stab you a few times."
Her waist still hurt terribly, yet curiosity was gnawing at her mind.
If Karl had never mentioned anything in the first place, it would've been fine. But now it was different.
It was like discovering a huge secret and suddenly losing the final clue just as you were about to uncover the truth. The frustration was unbearable.
"If you don't tell me, I'll never let you touch me again."
Angry, Di Wu blurted out the harshest threat she could think of.
Karl turned his head and looked at her seriously.
"Do you really want to know?"
Di Wu snorted.
"Hmph. Just as expected—men really do think with their lower halves. I say you can't touch me and suddenly you become obedient."
Karl scoffed.
"Then I won't tell you."
"No! You can't back out now!"
She quickly grabbed his arm.
"Are you going to tell me or not?"
Di Wu stared at him with wide eyes.
"I said I won't argue with you!"
Karl was speechless.
The emotions he had earlier were gone. Now even speaking felt awkward, like forced small talk without any real feeling.
"I… I don't know how to say it anymore," he muttered. "You just ruined the moment."
Di Wu frowned.
"What kind of memory did you recover? Something embarrassing? Or do you need some kind of dramatic atmosphere to tell it? I used to be an actress, remember? I can create the mood instantly. Trust me!"
Seeing her enthusiastic attitude, Karl closed his eyes.
He really didn't want to say it.
Even if he tried, the words wouldn't come out easily. Besides, Di Wan probably wouldn't take it well.
After calming himself, Karl spoke slowly.
"Actually… it's nothing major. But I might not be the person you think I am."
"What?"
Di Wan stared at him, annoyed.
"You dragged it out this long just to say that? You really don't know how to talk."
Karl looked at her seriously.
"In fact… you're my girlfriend for the second time."
Silence filled the room.
Di Wan frowned, thinking carefully about his words.
"That sounds ridiculous. My first love was you. How could my second boyfriend also be you?"
Karl used his bio-force field to help her turn over so she wouldn't have to lie on her stomach anymore.
Di Wan endured the pain and adjusted to the new position.
Karl asked quietly,
"Do you know how someone might return to the past?"
Di Wan thought for a moment, then looked at him in shock.
"What do you mean… You're not telling me you came from the future, are you?"
Karl nodded.
Di Wu looked stunned.
"But time has different nodes. Even if you're from the future, it doesn't mean it's our future. Maybe you met me in another parallel timeline."
She continued seriously.
"In time magic, there are many branching nodes. The future can split into countless possibilities. How do you know the version of me you met belongs to this timeline?"
Karl didn't answer immediately.
He simply looked at her with a gentle smile, though there was a hint of sadness in his eyes.
After a long time, he finally spoke.
"Do you know why my current strength is only a fraction of what it used to be?"
Di Wan shook her head.
Karl continued.
"I sealed every possible timeline involving us. No matter what choices you make in the future, there will only ever be one version of you and me—no new timelines will appear."
"To guarantee that uniqueness, I exhausted almost all my power. Even now, I can barely remember many things."
Di Wu frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Karl explained quietly.
"When someone's power reaches a certain level, all timelines eventually merge into the strongest one. The others disappear."
He paused.
"But… in my original timeline, you died."
"I couldn't accept that. So—"
Di Wan suddenly interrupted him.
"Alright. I get it. You can stop talking now."
Karl looked at her, surprised.
"What are you staring at?" she muttered. "Go to sleep. I'm tired…"
If she could move right now, she would've already turned away and ignored him completely.
Karl smiled softly.
He understood why she had stopped him.
She didn't want him to dwell on the past. She just wanted him to cherish the present.
Still, Karl couldn't resist teasing this stubborn girl.
He opened his arms and pulled her into a hug.
"Ah—!"
Di Wu gasped in pain.
"What are you doing?! That hurts! Don't touch me!"
Karl quickly let go, suddenly remembering her back injury.
Smack!
She slapped his chest and glared at him.
"Now I'm seriously questioning whether I should've forgiven you earlier."
"…Maybe."
Her eyes widened.
"What? You mean that seriously?"
"After you got angry—"
"Shut up. I get it."
"…."
"Sigh… Poor me. Looks like I'll be angry at you again in the future."
Karl blinked in confusion.
"What do you mean by that?"
"What?"
If not for her back injury, Di Wan would've already jumped up and started yelling at him.
"I think I understand now… I used to be so slow."
"You were extremely nearsighted before," Karl replied.
"Hah."
Di Wan laughed quietly and simply looked at him.
Karl tried to hug her again.
"Don't move! Don't touch me!"
Karl raised an eyebrow.
"Hey, you're really delicate."
Di Wan rolled her eyes at him.
"Do you know how many people used to chase me? Fans almost dragged me home before. And look at you!"
"You were born lucky and don't even realize it. People always say you only learn to cherish things after losing them. But I don't see you cherishing me at all."
"Cherishing someone isn't always obvious," Karl said calmly.
Di Wan pouted.
"Did you say that to me before?"
Then she frowned again.
"Why does everything about this story feel so complicated?"
Karl spread his hands.
"If I hadn't personally gone back, I wouldn't have been able to help."
Ignoring him, Di Wan forced herself to sit up despite the pain in her back.
Karl frowned immediately.
"What are you doing? You can barely move!"
Supporting her waist with one hand and the bed with the other, she glared at him.
"If you know I can't move, why are you just watching? Come help me!"
Karl quickly rushed over to support her.
"You're the one who said I can't touch you, and now you want help. You're really hard to serve."
"How do you expect me to sleep when I'm covered in sweat? Should I go to bed without taking a shower?"
Endure it…
You must endure it…
Don't lose your temper…
Di Wan silently repeated these words to herself.
But then—
"I remember…"
Smack!
A heavy slap landed on Karl's chest, interrupting him.
"I can't take this anymore!"
