Chapter 21 - Eyes in the City

The courtyard beneath the banyan tree slowly faded behind them as Arivaan and Devika stepped back into the winding streets of Ujjaini.

Afternoon sunlight reflected off the tiled rooftops while the city continued its restless rhythm. The markets remained busy, but a subtle change had begun spreading through the streets.

More guards.

More patrols.

More watchful eyes.

Arivaan noticed it immediately.

Two Rakshak soldiers stood near the intersection ahead, speaking quietly with a shopkeeper. Further down the road, another pair moved slowly through the crowd, their eyes scanning travelers carefully.

Devika noticed as well.

"The search is expanding," she said quietly.

Arivaan nodded.

"Looks like news about the fortress has spread."

Devika's gaze moved across the street.

"Those aren't ordinary city guards."

"No," Arivaan replied calmly. "They're Rakshak investigators."

Devika frowned.

"That means the Rakshak Sabha is taking this seriously."

Arivaan chuckled softly.

"They destroyed a villain organization overnight."

"Of course they're serious."

Devika stopped walking suddenly.

"You're underestimating them."

Arivaan glanced back at her.

"How?"

"The Rakshak Sabha doesn't just investigate crimes."

Devika's voice lowered.

"They analyze patterns."

"They track movements."

"And when something unusual happens…"

"…they send specialists."

Arivaan tilted his head slightly.

"Specialists?"

Devika nodded.

"Hunters."

Arivaan smiled.

"That sounds exciting."

Devika stared at him in disbelief.

"You really are insane."

Arivaan continued walking.

"Maybe."

"But the sooner they start looking for me…"

"…the sooner I learn how they operate."

Devika sighed.

"You're treating this like a strategy game."

Arivaan stopped near a small tea stall and leaned casually against the wooden counter.

A few travelers sat nearby drinking tea and discussing news from the surrounding regions.

Arivaan listened quietly.

One man spoke loudly.

"Did you hear about the battle in the northern mountains?"

Another traveler nodded.

"Some villain fortress was destroyed."

"Rakshak warriors burned the entire place down."

Arivaan took a cup of tea from the stall owner and sat down at a nearby table.

Devika remained standing beside him.

The conversation between the travelers continued.

"They say only one Rakshak was involved."

"Impossible."

"That's what the rumors say."

Arivaan smiled slightly.

Devika folded her arms.

"You're enjoying this."

Arivaan sipped his tea calmly.

"Information spreads quickly in cities."

Devika glanced at the floating lanterns hanging above the street.

"And rumors are rarely accurate."

Arivaan nodded.

"That's true."

"But rumors also create confusion."

He finished the tea and placed the cup on the table.

Devika lowered her voice.

"You shouldn't stay here long."

"Why?"

"Because if the Rakshak Sabha hears these rumors…"

"…they'll realize something is missing."

Arivaan raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

Devika looked directly at him.

"They'll realize that I never returned."

Arivaan leaned back in his chair.

"That's a good point."

Devika continued.

"When a Rakshak warrior disappears during a mission…"

"…the investigation becomes far more aggressive."

Arivaan smiled.

"Even better."

Devika stared at him.

"You want them to search harder?"

"Of course."

"Why?"

Arivaan leaned forward slightly.

"Because if they search harder…"

"…they reveal more of their system."

Devika shook her head slowly.

"You're planning something."

"Always."

Arivaan stood up from the table and began walking again.

The streets gradually grew narrower as they moved away from the market district.

Tall stone buildings cast long shadows across the road.

Arivaan stopped at a quiet intersection.

He glanced around carefully.

No patrols nearby.

No suspicious travelers.

Perfect.

He turned toward Devika.

"Tell me something."

"What?"

"How many elite Rakshaks are stationed in Ujjaini?"

Devika hesitated.

"You're asking about my colleagues."

"Yes."

"I won't betray them."

Arivaan smiled calmly.

"You don't need to."

Devika frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Arivaan focused on the floating panel again.

Target: Devika AgnivarnaAssimilation: 62%

The connection had grown stronger again.

Which meant the influence over her thoughts might already be increasing.

Arivaan activated a subtle command.

"Answer the question."

Devika's eyes widened slightly.

Her body stiffened.

For a moment she tried to resist.

But the command pressed against her mind.

"…There are four elite Rakshaks stationed in Ujjaini," she said slowly.

Arivaan nodded.

"Good."

Devika clenched her fists.

"You forced that answer."

"Just helping you remember."

Devika glared at him.

"You're abusing that ability."

Arivaan shrugged.

"Of course."

Devika's voice turned cold.

"You realize this power will eventually destroy you."

Arivaan laughed quietly.

"Maybe."

He looked toward the distant skyline where the towers of the Rakshak Sabha rose above the city.

"But if I'm going to fall someday…"

"…I might as well enjoy the climb first."

Devika watched him silently.

For the first time since their strange partnership began, she understood something clearly.

Arivaan wasn't just reacting to events anymore.

He was actively building something.

A strategy.

A path.

And if he succeeded…

The Rakshak Sabha might soon face a threat they had never encountered before.

A villain who didn't rely on brute strength.

A villain who controlled the strongest warriors instead.

And somewhere deep within Arivaan's mind, the strange power continued growing stronger.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Evolving.
