Chapter 20 – The Hunter in the Dark

The red system warning continued to flash in Ronan's vision.

---

Warning

Unknown Entity Detected

Threat Level: ???

---

The message pulsed like a heartbeat.

Slow.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Ronan's hand remained frozen in the air, only inches away from the floating Shadow Core.

Something inside the dungeon had changed.

The air itself felt different.

Colder.

Heavier.

The ruined factory, which had just moments ago echoed with the sounds of battle, had fallen into an unnatural silence.

Even the distant dripping water had stopped.

Ronan slowly lowered his hand.

Instinct.

Every instinct in his body was screaming the same thing.

Something dangerous is here.

The massive corpse of the Alpha Shadow Fang Panther lay behind him like a fallen king. Blood slowly spread across the cracked floor beneath the creature.

But whatever was approaching…

It had made the system react with uncertainty.

And that meant trouble.

Ronan finally grabbed the Shadow Core.

The moment his fingers touched the crystal—

A wave of cold energy surged through his hand.

The black crystal dissolved into particles of shadow and disappeared into his system storage.

---

At the same moment, another message appeared.

---

Level Up

Level 7 → Level 8

Stat Points Available: 5

---

Ronan exhaled slowly.

The level up energy helped stabilize his body slightly. The pain in his ribs lessened a bit, and his muscles regained some strength.

But the warning window was still blinking.

Whatever was coming…

It was still coming.

Then—

He heard it.

Clink.

A faint metallic sound echoed from deeper within the factory.

Not footsteps.

Something else.

Something dragging across the floor.

Ronan's eyes narrowed.

He turned toward the dark corridor leading deeper into the facility.

The shadows there seemed thicker than before.

Darker.

Then another sound followed.

Clink… scrape…

The noise grew closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Ronan picked up his dagger again.

His body was exhausted, but retreat wasn't an option anymore.

If he turned his back now…

Whatever was approaching might attack before he even reached the exit.

Better to face it here.

The darkness shifted.

And then—

A figure emerged.

At first Ronan thought it was human.

Tall.

Thin.

Standing upright.

But as the creature stepped into the dim factory light…

Ronan realized how wrong he was.

Its body was long and skeletal, covered in pale grey skin stretched tightly over bone-like muscles.

Long black chains hung from its arms like weapons.

Its fingers ended in curved claws.

But the most disturbing feature was its face.

Or rather…

The lack of one.

Where eyes and a mouth should have been, there was only a smooth, pale surface.

Like a blank mask.

The chains hanging from its arms scraped across the ground again.

Clink.

The system window appeared instantly.

---

New Enemy Detected

Species: Chain Warden

Classification: Dungeon Sentinel

Threat Level: High

---

Ronan's grip tightened around his dagger.

A sentinel…?

That meant this creature wasn't just another monster.

It was a guardian.

Something that protected the dungeon itself.

The Chain Warden stopped about fifteen meters away from Ronan.

Its head slowly tilted.

As if observing him.

Studying him.

Then the chains lifted slightly from the ground.

Ronan felt the killing intent instantly.

The creature attacked without warning.

The chains shot forward like living snakes.

CRACK!

Ronan barely rolled aside in time.

The chains smashed into the concrete floor, leaving deep cracks in the ground.

"Fast!"

He pushed himself up immediately.

But the chains were already coming again.

They lashed through the air from two directions at once.

Ronan jumped backward—

But one chain clipped his leg.

WHAM!

The force sent him crashing into a metal crate.

Pain shot through his thigh.

Ronan gritted his teeth.

"This thing is strong…"

The Chain Warden moved forward silently.

The chains coiled around its arms again like obedient serpents.

Then they attacked once more.

This time faster.

Ronan ducked under the first strike.

He dashed forward toward the creature.

Closing distance was his only chance.

The chains were too dangerous at range.

The Chain Warden seemed to notice his intention.

One chain shot downward.

The other swept horizontally.

A perfect trap.

Ronan slid across the ground at the last second, barely slipping between the two attacks.

Now he was close.

Very close.

He lunged forward and stabbed.

The dagger struck the creature's chest.

But instead of flesh—

CLANG.

The blade hit something hard.

Metal.

Ronan's eyes widened.

"Armor?"

The Chain Warden's torso was reinforced with dark metallic plates beneath its skin.

The creature tilted its head again.

Then its chains wrapped around Ronan's arm.

Too fast.

Before he could react—

The chain tightened.

CRACK!

Pain exploded through his arm as the metal links crushed around it.

The Chain Warden lifted Ronan off the ground like he weighed nothing.

Ronan's dagger nearly slipped from his hand.

The creature raised its other chain.

Preparing the final blow.

Ronan's vision blurred.

But then—

The system interface flashed again.

Predator Instinct Reactivating

Combat Condition Met

---

Ronan's senses sharpened instantly.

Time slowed.

He could feel the tension in the chain.

The slight gap between two metal links.

Without hesitation—

He drove his dagger into that gap.

CLINK!

The blade wedged perfectly between the chain links.

Then Ronan twisted with all his strength.

SNAP!

One section of the chain broke apart.

The sudden loss of tension caused Ronan to drop back onto the ground.

He rolled away immediately.

The Chain Warden paused.

For the first time—

It stopped moving.

It looked down at the broken chain in its hand.

Then slowly raised its head toward Ronan again.

The air inside the factory grew colder.

Ronan stood up slowly.

His breathing was heavy.

His arm throbbed painfully.

But now he understood something important.

"This thing…"

"Isn't invincible."

The Chain Warden lifted its remaining chain again.

The broken links dragged across the floor like shattered bones.

The battle wasn't over.

Not even close.

But Ronan's eyes had changed.

Earlier he had fought to survive.

Now…

He was analyzing.

Learning.

Adapting.

Just like a true predator.

Ronan raised his dagger again.

Across the dark factory floor—

The Chain Warden prepared its next attack.

And deep within Ronan's system…

Another hidden function was slowly beginning to awaken.
