Chapter 39 - The last enemy

Dawn had barely broken when the call came.

One of the guards rushed into the strategy room, breathing hard. "Sir… we've intercepted a transmission. The rival syndicate leader wants to meet."

The Don's eyes darkened instantly. "Where?"

"The old harbor warehouse."

Silence fell over the room. I could feel the tension like a wire stretched too tight.

"It's a trap," I said quietly.

"Of course it is," he replied calmly.

But then his gaze shifted to me, sharp and protective. "Which is exactly why you're staying here."

"No," I said immediately.

His brows furrowed. "This isn't a debate."

"It is," I insisted, stepping closer. "They want me. If this ends tonight, I need to be there."

For a long moment he stared at me, as if weighing my words against every instinct he had to keep me safe.

Finally, he exhaled slowly.

"You stay beside me," he said firmly. "You do exactly as I say."

I nodded.

Hours later we arrived at the harbor.

The warehouse stood abandoned, the ocean wind howling through broken windows. The place smelled of salt, rust, and danger.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

"I was wondering when you'd arrive."

A tall figure stepped from the shadows.

My heart dropped.

I knew him.

"Uncle…?" I whispered.

The Don's body went rigid beside me.

The man smiled coldly. "It took you long enough to recognize me."

The truth slammed into me all at once.

My uncle had orchestrated everything.

The auction.

The enemies.

The war.

"You…" My voice shook. "You sold me."

His smile widened. "You were an investment. And unfortunately, he stole what belonged to me."

The Don stepped forward slowly, his presence turning deadly.

"You made one mistake," he said coldly.

"And what's that?" my uncle sneered.

"You touched what's mine."

Gunfire exploded across the warehouse.

Guards rushed forward, bullets striking crates and metal walls. Chaos erupted instantly.

I ducked as shots rang out around us.

The Don moved like a shadow beside me, precise and lethal.

Within seconds several attackers were down.

My uncle tried to escape through the back exit.

But the Don was faster.

He caught him before he reached the door.

The room fell silent.

My uncle stared at him, fear finally creeping into his eyes.

"You've lost," the Don said quietly.

Then he pulled the trigger.

The echo of the gunshot rang through the empty warehouse.

The war was over.

When the silence returned, the Don turned to me.

His expression softened instantly as he stepped closer.

"It's finished," he said.

I looked around the ruined warehouse, the ocean wind rushing through the broken walls.

All the danger.

All the fear.

All the chaos.

Finally gone.

He pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly.

"No one will ever take you from me again," he murmured against my hair.

For the first time since the auction…

I believed him.
