Night had once again fallen over Mystic Falls.
The quiet streets were lit only by scattered street lamps and the pale glow of the moon. Most of the town had already gone to sleep.
But not everyone.
Standing on the rooftop of a building near the town square, Katherine Pierce watched the town below with a thoughtful smile.
Five hundred years.
That was how long she had survived.
And she had survived because she understood one simple rule:
Always know who might become a threat.
But Alexander Nightshade…
He didn't feel like a threat.
He felt like a mystery.
And Katherine Pierce loved mysteries.
Earlier that day she had watched him at school, interacting with Elena Gilbert, Bonnie Bennett, and Caroline Forbes.
The girls clearly liked him.
Especially Elena.
Katherine smirked.
"Of course you do," she whispered softly.
Alexander was calm, confident, mysterious, and incredibly attractive.
It would be surprising if girls didn't like him.
But that wasn't what interested Katherine.
What interested her was something much deeper.
The way he carried himself.
The way he looked at vampires without fear.
And most importantly…
The way he had spoken Niklaus Mikaelson's name so casually.
Niklaus Mikaelson
Only a handful of people in the world even knew that name.
Yet Alexander had said it like he was talking about an old acquaintance.
That bothered Katherine.
And fascinated her.
"So who exactly are you…" she murmured.
Suddenly, a calm voice answered from behind her.
"You seem very interested in that question."
Katherine didn't jump.
She never jumped.
Instead she slowly turned around.
Standing casually near the rooftop entrance…
Was Alexander Nightshade.
His golden eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight.
Katherine crossed her arms.
"Well, this is embarrassing," she said playfully."I was just thinking about you."
Alexander walked closer.
"I noticed."
Katherine raised an eyebrow.
"You noticed?"
Alexander nodded.
"You've been following me since yesterday."
For a brief moment, Katherine was actually surprised.
Very few people could detect her presence when she didn't want to be seen.
Yet Alexander had noticed easily.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Katherine smiled slowly.
"You're full of surprises."
Alexander shrugged.
"I try."
She stepped closer to him, her eyes examining his face carefully.
"Tell me something honestly," Katherine said.
Alexander tilted his head slightly.
"That depends on the question."
Katherine's voice dropped slightly, almost seductive.
"What are you?"
Alexander chuckled.
"You've asked that already."
"And you didn't answer."
Alexander looked at the distant lights of Mystic Falls.
Then back at her.
"What would you do if I told you?"
Katherine smirked.
"Depends on the answer."
Alexander leaned slightly closer to her.
For the first time, Katherine felt something unusual.
A strange pressure.
Not fear.
But something powerful.
Something ancient.
Alexander spoke quietly.
"I'm someone you probably shouldn't try to manipulate."
Katherine blinked once.
Then she laughed.
"Oh please," she said confidently.
"I manipulate everyone."
Alexander smiled slightly.
"Not me."
The confidence in his voice was absolute.
And that made Katherine even more curious.
She studied his face again.
"You know," she said thoughtfully, "I've met kings, warriors, vampires, witches…"
She stepped even closer.
"But you…"
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"You feel older than all of them."
Alexander didn't respond.
But his silence confirmed something.
Something Katherine couldn't fully understand yet.
After a moment, Katherine suddenly smiled again.
"Well," she said lightly, "since you clearly enjoy being mysterious…"
She leaned close to his ear.
"I guess I'll just have to figure you out slowly."
Alexander chuckled.
"That sounds like a dangerous plan."
Katherine pulled back.
"Dangerous things are the most fun."
For a moment they simply looked at each other.
Two predators.
Both dangerous.
Both hiding secrets.
Finally Katherine stepped back toward the rooftop edge.
"I'll see you around, Alexander."
She gave him one last playful smile.
"And next time…"
Her eyes sparkled mischievously.
"Maybe I'll get a real answer."
With that, she jumped down from the rooftop and disappeared into the night.
Alexander remained standing there quietly.
His golden eyes followed the direction she left.
"A five-hundred-year-old vampire…"
He murmured.
"Still curious like a child."
Alexander smiled slightly.
Katherine Pierce believed she was the hunter.
But she didn't realize something important.
Compared to Alexander Nightshade…
Even ancient vampires were just players in a much larger game.
And the story of Mystic Falls had only just begun to change.
