Evening settled over Mystic Falls, bringing with it the usual quiet calm that hid the town's supernatural secrets.
At Mystic Falls High School, most students had already gone home.
But one classroom still had its lights on.
Inside, Elena Gilbert sat with a few books open on the desk, pretending to study.
Pretending.
Because her attention kept drifting to the person sitting near the window.
Alexander Nightshade.
He looked relaxed, leaning slightly back in his chair as he flipped through a history book.
Elena had tried to focus on her homework for the past ten minutes.
But every time she glanced up…
She found herself watching him again.
"Why is he so calm all the time?" she wondered.
Most new students tried hard to fit in.
Alexander didn't seem to care.
He simply existed as if the world naturally adjusted around him.
Finally Elena spoke.
"You're not actually reading that, are you?"
Alexander looked up.
His golden eyes met hers.
"Why do you think that?"
Elena pointed at the book.
"You've been on the same page for five minutes."
Alexander smiled slightly.
"Maybe I just like that page."
Elena laughed.
"You're weird."
"Is that a bad thing?"
She hesitated.
"…No."
Before Elena could say anything else, another voice spoke from the classroom doorway.
"Oh good."
The voice was smooth.
Sarcastic.
Dangerously amused.
"I was hoping I'd find you two alone."
Both Elena and Alexander looked toward the door.
Leaning casually against the frame was Damon Salvatore.
His blue eyes were focused directly on Alexander.
Elena frowned.
"Damon?"
Damon pushed himself away from the doorway and slowly walked inside.
"I came to talk to our mysterious new friend."
Alexander watched him calmly.
He stopped a few steps away.
Then he looked Alexander up and down carefully.
Unlike humans…
Damon wasn't just looking.
He was listening.
To Alexander's heartbeat.
Except…
There wasn't one.
Damon's smirk faded slightly.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
"Elena," Damon said casually.
"Would you mind giving us a moment?"
Elena crossed her arms.
"Why?"
Damon sighed dramatically.
"Because grown men sometimes need to have private conversations."
Elena looked between the two men.
She clearly didn't like the tension in the room.
But eventually she stood.
"Fine."
She looked at Alexander.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
Alexander nodded.
"Goodnight, Elena."
She hesitated for a moment…
Then left the classroom.
The door closed behind her.
Now only two people remained.
Damon and Alexander.
Silence filled the room for a few seconds.
Then Damon spoke.
"You're not human."
Alexander didn't react.
"That was fast."
Damon walked slowly around the classroom.
"I've met witches, werewolves, vampires…"
He stopped in front of Alexander again.
"But you don't smell like any of them."
Alexander leaned back in his chair.
"And that bothers you?"
Damon grinned.
"It intrigues me."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"Who are you?"
Alexander looked at him calmly.
"Alexander Nightshade."
Damon rolled his eyes.
"That's not what I meant."
"I know."
Damon studied him carefully.
For the first time in a long time…
Damon Salvatore felt uncertain.
And he hated uncertainty.
"Let me guess," Damon said.
"You're some ancient supernatural creature hiding in Mystic Falls for mysterious reasons."
Alexander smiled faintly.
"Something like that."
Damon leaned closer.
His voice lowered.
"Here's the problem."
Alexander waited.
Damon continued.
"This town already has enough supernatural drama."
His eyes hardened slightly.
"So if you're planning to cause trouble…"
For a brief moment, Damon's vampire face appeared.
Veins under his eyes.
Sharp fangs.
"…I'll have to stop you."
Alexander looked completely unimpressed.
"Are you threatening me?"
Damon smiled again.
"Maybe."
Alexander stood up slowly.
Now the two men stood face to face.
Damon expected fear.
Or at least tension.
Instead…
Alexander looked relaxed.
Almost amused.
"You're protective of this town," Alexander said calmly.
Damon shrugged.
"Someone has to be."
Alexander nodded slightly.
"That's admirable."
Damon blinked.
That wasn't the reaction he expected.
Alexander continued.
"But you don't need to worry."
"Why?"
Alexander smiled.
"Because if I wanted to destroy Mystic Falls…"
He looked directly into Damon's eyes.
"You wouldn't be able to stop me."
For a brief moment…
The air in the room felt heavy.
Damon's instincts screamed danger.
This man wasn't bluffing.
He was stating a fact.
And somehow…
Damon believed him.
After a few seconds, Damon chuckled.
"Well…"
He stepped back.
"That's either the most confident lie I've ever heard…"
"…or the most terrifying truth."
Alexander didn't respond.
Damon turned toward the classroom door.
But before leaving, he looked back.
"You know something funny?"
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
Damon smirked.
"Elena likes you."
Alexander said nothing.
Damon added casually:
"And that makes you my problem."
With that, Damon left the room.
The door closed quietly.
Alexander remained standing there for a moment.
Then he sighed softly.
"Vampires…"
He muttered.
"So dramatic."
Outside the school…
Damon walked through the empty parking lot.
But his usual confident smile was gone.
Instead, his expression looked thoughtful.
Because one thing was clear.
Alexander Nightshade was hiding something huge.
And Damon Salvatore intended to find out exactly what it was.
No matter what it took.
