Night returned to Mystic Falls, wrapping the quiet streets in shadows and moonlight.
Most people were asleep.
But the supernatural residents of the town rarely followed human schedules.
Inside a small rented house near the edge of town, Alexander Nightshade sat calmly on a chair near the window.
The room was quiet.
A book rested in his hand.
Yet his golden eyes were focused on the night sky outside.
He wasn't reading.
He was waiting.
After a few seconds…
A faint sound echoed across the roof.
Light footsteps.
Graceful.
Fast.
Alexander smiled slightly.
Right on time.
A moment later, the window opened.
And someone stepped inside as if entering her own home.
Katherine Pierce.
She landed silently on the floor and straightened her jacket.
"You should really lock your windows," she said casually.
Alexander turned a page in his book.
"That wouldn't stop you."
Katherine smirked.
"Fair point."
She walked around the room slowly, examining everything.
It was simple.
Too simple.
Almost suspiciously normal.
"You live like a human," she commented.
Alexander finally closed the book.
"I enjoy peace."
Katherine sat casually on the edge of his table.
"You're a very strange supernatural creature."
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
"You still haven't figured out what I am?"
Katherine crossed her legs, looking amused.
"Oh I've thought of several possibilities."
She counted on her fingers dramatically.
"Ancient vampire… powerful witch… secret hybrid…"
She leaned forward slightly.
"But none of them feel right."
Alexander chuckled.
"You're persistent."
"That's why I'm still alive."
For a moment, Katherine studied him carefully.
Her vampire instincts were sharp.
Yet Alexander felt… impossible to read.
No heartbeat.
No scent.
No magical aura.
It was like standing near something that shouldn't exist.
"Let me ask you something," she said.
Alexander nodded slightly.
"Go ahead."
Katherine's expression turned more serious.
"You knew about Niklaus Mikaelson."
Alexander didn't respond.
"You knew I've been running from him for five hundred years," she continued.
Her eyes narrowed.
"So how?"
Alexander leaned back slightly.
"I know many things."
Katherine rolled her eyes.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one you're getting tonight."
She sighed dramatically.
"You're frustrating."
Alexander smiled.
"You came here voluntarily."
Katherine paused.
Then she laughed softly.
"True."
For a few seconds, the room was quiet again.
Then Katherine asked something unexpected.
"Do you like Elena?"
Alexander blinked once.
"That's a sudden question."
Katherine shrugged.
"She's my doppelgänger."
Elena Gilbert
"I'm naturally curious."
Alexander considered the question.
"She's kind."
Katherine smirked.
"That sounds like a polite way of avoiding the question."
Alexander looked at her calmly.
"You enjoy creating drama."
"Of course I do."
Katherine hopped off the table and walked closer to him.
"You should see her face today."
Alexander sighed.
"You went to the school just to cause trouble."
Katherine smiled innocently.
"Maybe."
She stopped right in front of him.
Very close.
"You didn't seem bothered."
Alexander met her gaze.
"I'm not easily bothered."
Katherine's smile slowly changed.
Less playful.
More curious.
"Alexander," she said quietly.
"You're either incredibly powerful…"
"…or incredibly stupid."
Alexander chuckled.
"Which one do you think?"
Katherine leaned closer, almost whispering.
"I think you're hiding something ancient."
For a brief moment…
The air in the room felt heavy.
Even Katherine could feel it.
Something deep inside Alexander shifted slightly.
Not threatening.
But vast.
Ancient.
Older than anything she had ever encountered.
Her eyes widened just slightly.
Alexander stood up calmly.
The pressure disappeared instantly.
Katherine blinked.
"What was that?"
Alexander walked toward the window.
"Nothing you need to worry about."
Katherine stared at him.
For the first time in centuries…
She felt genuine uncertainty.
And strangely…
Excitement.
She smiled slowly.
"Well," she said.
"This just got a lot more interesting."
Alexander looked back at her.
"You should leave before sunrise."
Katherine shrugged.
"Fine."
She moved toward the window again.
But before leaving, she looked back.
Her eyes gleamed mischievously.
"You know something?"
Alexander waited.
Katherine grinned.
"I think I like you more every time we talk."
Then she disappeared into the night.
Alexander remained standing by the window.
Watching the dark sky over Mystic Falls.
"A five-hundred-year-old vampire…"
He murmured quietly.
"Still playing games."
But somewhere else in town…
Someone else was also thinking about him.
Elena Gilbert lay awake in her bed.
Staring at the ceiling.
For some reason…
She couldn't stop thinking about Alexander.
And that confused her more than anything.
Because deep down…
She had a feeling.
Alexander Nightshade was about to change everything in Mystic Falls.
