Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 : The Love They Needed

Jay's POV

A few weeks passed after I moved into the Watson mansion.

Life slowly settled into a comfortable routine.

Mornings were usually chaotic because Keiren and Keigan argued about the smallest things. Sometimes it was about who got the last pancake, sometimes about whose turn it was to choose the movie.

But somehow, those little arguments always ended in laughter.

Afternoons were quieter. Keifer usually stayed in his office working while I helped the boys with homework or played games with them in the living room.

Without even realizing it… I had become part of their everyday life.

But one evening, something unexpected happened.

The house was unusually quiet.

I was sitting in the living room helping Keigan with his homework when suddenly we heard a loud sound upstairs.

Bang.

Keigan looked up immediately.

"That was Keiren's door."

A few minutes later, Keifer came downstairs looking confused.

"Where's Keiren?" he asked.

Keigan looked worried.

"He locked himself in his room."

Keifer frowned.

"He what?"

We all went upstairs together.

Keifer knocked on the door firmly.

"Keiren. Open the door."

No response.

He knocked again.

"Keiren."

Still nothing.

Keigan stood beside me quietly, his hands clenched nervously.

Then he whispered softly,

"He misses mom again."

My heart tightened.

Their mother had passed away years ago.

Sometimes grief returns suddenly… without warning.

I gently placed a hand on Keigan's shoulder.

"I'll handle it."

Keifer looked at me, slightly surprised, but he stepped aside.

I slowly walked toward the door and knocked softly.

"Keiren?"

Silence.

I knocked again.

"Hey… it's me."

Still no response.

So instead of knocking again, I quietly sat down on the floor outside the door.

The hallway was silent.

After a moment I spoke softly.

"You know… when people we love go away… it hurts a lot."

No sound came from the other side.

But I knew he was listening.

"It feels unfair," I continued gently. "Sometimes you feel lonely… or angry."

My voice softened even more.

"But just because someone isn't here anymore… it doesn't mean they stopped loving you."

The hallway stayed quiet.

A few minutes passed.

Then suddenly—

Click.

The door slowly opened.

Keiren stood there with teary eyes.

The moment he saw me sitting there, his face crumpled.

He stepped forward and hugged me tightly.

I wrapped my arms around him.

"It's okay," I whispered softly.

Keigan quickly joined the hug too.

And for the first time since I met them… both boys cried.

I just held them quietly.

Sometimes people don't need answers.

Sometimes they just need someone to stay.

Keifer's POV

I stood a few steps away in the hallway, watching everything happen.

At first, I was ready to break the door open.

Keiren had locked himself inside before… and every time it happened, I never knew what to do.

I hated seeing him like that.

Hearing Jay say "I'll handle it" surprised me.

Part of me wanted to stop her.

This was something I usually dealt with.

But something about the calm way she spoke made me step back.

So I watched.

Jay didn't panic.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't try to force the door open.

Instead, she simply sat outside the door and talked to him gently.

I listened as she spoke about grief… about love… about how people who leave never really stop loving us.

Her voice was soft.

Patient.

Understanding.

And slowly… something incredible happened.

The door opened.

When Keiren ran into her arms crying, my chest tightened.

For years I had tried to comfort them when they missed mom.

But it was never quite enough.

Seeing Jay hug both of them… seeing the boys cry freely without holding anything back…

I realized something I hadn't understood before.

They didn't just need someone to take care of them.

They needed someone who could feel their pain with them.

And somehow…

Jay understood them in a way I never could.

Standing there in the hallway, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time.

Relief.

Jay's pov

After that day, something changed between us.

Keiren and Keigan began following me everywhere.

If I went to the kitchen—they followed.

If I went to the garden—they followed.

If I sat down to read—they sat beside me.

Keifer often laughed when he saw them.

"You two have completely abandoned me."

Keigan shrugged.

"Ate Jay is nicer."

Keifer shook his head dramatically.

"Unbelievable."

But I could see the small smile on his face.

I helped them with homework, played games with them, and listened to all their random stories.

Slowly…

The boys started smiling more.

The house felt louder.

Warmer.

More alive.

Shopping Day

One weekend, Keifer decided to take all of us shopping.

The mall was crowded and bright.

Keigan immediately ran toward the toy store.

"Brother! Look!"

Keifer sighed.

"This was a mistake."

I laughed and followed them.

After buying a few things, we were walking through the mall when suddenly Keiren tugged my hand.

"Ate Jay?"

"Yes?"

He looked nervous.

Then he said very quietly—

"Mama?"

I froze.

Keifer stopped walking too.

Keiren looked embarrassed.

"I didn't mean—"

Before he could finish, I hugged him tightly.

"You take care of us like mom did," he said softly.

Keigan nodded.

"You always listen to us."

My eyes softened.

I hugged both boys.

"I'll always take care of you," I said gently.

Keifer's POV

Watching that moment felt strange… and overwhelming at the same time.

For years after our mother died, the house had felt empty.

Keiren and Keigan had grown quieter.

Even though I tried my best to take care of them, I knew there was something I could never replace.

They needed warmth.

They needed comfort.

They needed someone who could give them the kind of love only a mother could.

And standing there in the mall, watching Jay hug them… I finally understood something.

She had already given them that.

The boys looked happy in a way I hadn't seen in years.

And for the first time since our mother passed away…

The Watson family didn't feel broken anymore.

It felt whole.

And in that moment I realized something else too.

Bringing Jay into my life…

Was the best decision I had ever made. ❤️
