Chapter 40 - The Security Footage

Mira stared at the staircase door.

Security cameras.

The idea kept echoing in her mind.

If the building had cameras… then maybe there was proof.

Proof that this was all just a strange coincidence.

Or proof that something much stranger had happened.

"You really think the cameras recorded something?" she asked quietly.

He shrugged slightly.

"If we were here before, there's a chance."

"And if we weren't?"

"Then we'll finally stop overthinking."

Mira almost laughed.

Stopping overthinking had never been her strong point.

Still, the idea of seeing the footage made her nervous.

What if they really had been here before?

What if he was right?

"Let's try," she finally said.

They walked back toward the staircase.

The metal door creaked slightly as they pushed it open.

The hallway on the top floor was quiet.

Most of the residents were probably inside their apartments, watching TV or having dinner.

Living normal lives.

Unaware that two strangers were trying to solve a mystery about lost memories.

"Security room should be downstairs," he said.

"How do you know?"

"Most buildings keep it near the entrance."

They took the elevator down to the ground floor.

Mira's heart was beating faster with every passing second.

She couldn't explain why.

But something about this felt important.

The elevator doors opened.

The lobby was almost empty.

Only the security guard sat at his desk near the entrance, scrolling through his phone.

Mira whispered, "What do we say to him?"

He thought for a moment.

Then he walked toward the desk.

"Excuse me," he said politely.

The guard looked up.

"Yes?"

"We wanted to ask something," he continued.

"About the rooftop."

The guard raised an eyebrow.

"Rooftop?"

"Yes," he said calmly.

"We visited it tonight and noticed the security cameras."

"And?"

He hesitated slightly.

Then said,

"We think we might have been here before."

The guard looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Mira quickly jumped in.

"We're not sure," she said nervously.

"But we wanted to check the footage from a few weeks ago."

The guard frowned.

"Why?"

For a moment, neither of them had an answer.

The truth sounded too strange.

Finally Mira said,

"We're trying to confirm something."

The guard looked at them suspiciously.

"Security footage is private."

"We can't just show it to anyone."

Mira felt disappointment rise in her chest.

Of course it wouldn't be that easy.

Then he asked calmly,

"What if we just check one specific date?"

The guard crossed his arms.

"Which date?"

Mira looked at him.

They didn't actually know.

"Two months ago," he said slowly.

"Maybe around late evening."

The guard stared at them for a moment.

Then sighed.

"You people watch too many mystery shows."

But surprisingly…

He stood up.

"Fine. One minute."

Mira's heart jumped.

"Really?"

"Only because I'm curious now," the guard said.

"If I find nothing, you both leave."

"Deal," Mira said quickly.

The guard led them to a small room behind the desk.

Inside were several monitors showing camera views from around the building.

Parking lot.

Lobby.

Elevator.

Hallways.

He sat in front of the system and opened the recordings.

"Two months ago, you said?"

"Yes."

The footage loaded.

A date appeared on the screen.

The guard fast-forwarded through several hours.

People entering the building.

Residents leaving for work.

Nothing unusual.

Then he switched to the top floor hallway camera.

"This one shows the staircase to the terrace," he said.

Mira leaned closer to the screen.

Her heart started pounding.

The footage continued.

Empty hallway.

Silent staircase.

Then suddenly—

A person appeared on the screen.

Mira's breath stopped.

It was him.

Walking down the hallway toward the staircase.

Exactly like he had tonight.

"You see?" he said quietly.

"I told you I've been here before."

But Mira wasn't looking at him.

Her eyes were locked on the screen.

Because the footage continued.

The staircase door opened again.

And someone else appeared.

Mira.

She was standing right there on the screen.

Two months ago.

Walking onto the rooftop.

Mira felt her knees weaken.

"That's… me."

The guard leaned closer.

"Well, looks like you were telling the truth."

But the strangest part wasn't that they were both there.

It was what happened next.

The two people on the screen…

Looked like they were arguing.

Mira watched the footage in shock.

Her past self was talking quickly.

Moving her hands.

Clearly upset.

Then suddenly—

She turned around.

And walked away.

But before leaving the staircase…

She stopped.

Turned back.

And said something.

Something the camera couldn't hear.

Mira's heart pounded.

"What did I say?"

The footage ended.

Silence filled the room.

The guard leaned back in his chair.

"Well… that's interesting."

But Mira wasn't listening anymore.

Because she suddenly realized something terrifying.

She looked at him slowly.

"If we argued that night…"

Her voice trembled slightly.

"Why can't either of us remember it?"

And for the first time since this mystery began…

Even he didn't have an answer.
