Chapter 39 - The Memory They Both Lost

The night air on the rooftop suddenly felt colder.

Mira stared at him, trying to understand what he had just said.

"I think we've been here before."

"In real life."

Her mind immediately rejected the idea.

"That's impossible," she said quickly.

He didn't answer right away.

Instead, he looked around the rooftop again, as if searching for something.

The city lights stretched endlessly below them.

Cars moved like tiny glowing dots on the roads.

Everything looked peaceful.

Normal.

But the feeling inside Mira's chest was anything but normal.

"You don't remember?" he asked quietly.

Mira frowned.

"Remember what?"

He hesitated.

Then he walked slowly toward one of the small tables near the railing.

The same kind of table they always sat at in the dream.

He placed his hand on the surface of the table.

"This one."

Mira followed him.

"What about it?"

He ran his fingers slowly across the wooden surface.

Then he pointed to something near the edge.

A small scratch.

Thin but clearly visible.

"I remember this," he said.

Mira leaned closer.

"It's just a scratch."

"No," he said calmly.

"It's more than that."

Her curiosity grew.

"What do you mean?"

He looked at her again.

"I remember someone making this scratch."

Mira blinked.

"You remember someone scratching a table?"

"Yes."

"That's oddly specific."

He gave a small smile.

"It happened during a conversation."

"What conversation?"

He paused for a moment.

Like he was trying to pull something from deep inside his memory.

"You were sitting here," he said slowly.

Mira's heart skipped.

"Me?"

"Yes."

"That's not possible."

He continued as if he hadn't heard her.

"You were holding a key."

"A key?"

"You were nervous."

Mira felt a strange uneasiness.

Something about his words felt familiar.

Too familiar.

"You kept scratching the table with the key while talking," he continued.

"That's how this mark appeared."

Mira suddenly stepped back.

"Stop."

He looked confused.

"What?"

Her heart was beating faster now.

Because an image had suddenly appeared in her mind.

Just for a second.

But it felt real.

A key in her hand.

The sound of metal scratching wood.

And the feeling of nervousness.

Mira shook her head quickly.

"No… that's not possible."

"What isn't?"

"I've never been here before."

But her voice didn't sound confident anymore.

He studied her expression carefully.

"You saw something, didn't you?"

"No."

"Mira."

"I said no."

But the moment she looked away…

Another flash appeared in her mind.

A laugh.

A conversation.

Someone standing near the railing.

And the feeling of being here before.

Mira grabbed the railing for support.

Her head suddenly felt dizzy.

"What's wrong?" he asked, stepping closer.

"I… I think…"

She tried to find the words.

But the memory fragments were too confusing.

"I saw something," she admitted.

His eyes sharpened slightly.

"What did you see?"

"Just pieces," she said.

"Like flashes."

"Of what?"

She looked around the rooftop slowly.

Trying to connect the images in her mind.

"This place," she whispered.

"I've seen it."

He didn't seem surprised.

"How?"

"I don't know."

She pointed toward the staircase door.

"I remember standing there."

Then she pointed toward the table.

"And sitting here."

Her breathing became slightly uneven.

"But that doesn't make sense."

"Why?"

"Because if I had been here before…"

She looked directly at him.

"I would remember meeting you."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then he said something quietly.

"Unless…"

Mira felt her stomach tighten.

"Unless what?"

He took a slow breath.

"Unless something happened that made us forget."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Mira immediately shook her head.

"That sounds like a movie."

"Maybe."

"People don't just lose memories like that."

He looked thoughtful.

"Actually… they do."

She frowned.

"When?"

"After accidents."

"After trauma."

"Or when the brain tries to protect itself."

Mira crossed her arms.

"So you're saying something bad happened here?"

"I'm saying it's possible."

Her mind raced with questions.

"What kind of event could make two people forget the same place?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the far corner of the rooftop.

Near the staircase door.

"There's one way to find out," he said.

Mira followed his gaze.

"What do you mean?"

He pointed toward the wall near the door.

"There are security cameras in the building."

Mira blinked.

"And?"

He looked back at her.

His expression serious again.

"If we've really been here before…"

He paused for a moment.

"Then the cameras might have recorded it."

Mira's heart started racing again.

Because if he was right…

Then somewhere inside this building…

There might be footage of them standing on this rooftop.

Before they even knew each other.

And that possibility was both exciting…

And terrifying.
