CHAPTER ONE
THE UNEXPECTED MEETING.
The rain had been falling for hours. Not the gentle kind that whispered Against the rooftops and faded Way quietly, but the heavy, stubborn kind that turned the city into a gray blur of water and reflections. Street light shimmered across the soaked pavement, and cars move slowly through the streets, Their headlight cutting through the darkness like pale knives. Lena Hart Hurried along the sidewalk, holding her coat tightly around her body as a cold wind pushed against her. Her shoes splashed through the shallow puddles. "This is exactly how horror movie start,"She muttered under her breath. How long brown hair was already damp, And a few strands clung to her face. She tried to brush them away, as she looked around desperately For somewhere to escape the storm. She had just finished a long interview for a small newspaper she worked for, and the weather changed without warning. Lena sighed and I adjusted the strap of her bag. Inside that bag., Was her most important possession , Her notebook, every story idea, every interview details, every random thought lived inside those pages. It was messy, unorganized, but to Lena, It was treasure. A sudden gust of Wind pushed another wave of rain against her face. "Okay , That's enough" She groaned . Just then, she noticed something across the street. A small café Glowed warmly show the rain, it's windows shining with soft golden light. To Lena , It looks like heaven. Without hesitation, she cross the street quickly and push the cafe door open. A soft bell chimed above her head. Instant Warmth Wrapped around her like a blanket. The café cozy and quiet, filled with the comforting smell Of coffee and fresh pastries. Soft music played in the background, barely Louder than the rain tapping against the windows. Lena exhale in relief. "Oh thank goodness," She whispered. She stepped inside, brushed the water from her coat. Only a few people were inside. A couple sat near the window, talking quietly, and a man type on a laptop near the wall.. And then there was him, he sat alone in the far corner. Lena noticed him immediately, Does she couldn't explain why. Maybe it was the way he sat perfectly still, Like he belong to a different world than the one around him. Or maybe it was his eyes. Even from across the room, she could tell they were focus on something outside the rain- covered window. He looked deep in thought , Seriously mysterious. Lena quickly looked away, Shaking our heads slightly."Stop staring at strangers," She told herself quietly . She walked to the counter,"Hi," She said to the barista With a friendly smile. "Can I get cappuccino, please?" " of course " While waiting, Lena glanced around again. Her eyes drifted back to the man in the corner. He didn't move, not even slightly. His dark coat hung neatly over the back of his chair, and a cup of black coffee sat untouched in front of him. He looked calm, too calm. Almost like the storm outside didn't exist to him. " Here you go ." Lena turned quickly as the barista handed her the cappuccino. " Thank you." She grabbed the cup and turned towards the room. But the floor near the entrance was still wet From people coming in from the rain. Her food slid slightly ." OH." Her balance shifted the cup tilted, Coffee splashed across the nearby table, unfortunately. That table belongs to the mysterious man. Lena froze. " Oh my gosh." The man slowly looked up. Their eyes met for a moments the entire café seem to go quiet.."I am so sorry." Lena blurted out quickly. She rushed forward, grabbing napkins from another table,"I didn't mean to do that, I promise!" She begun, wiping the spill coffee nervously." I swear I am not usually this clumsy. The rain is clearly trying to destroy my reputation tonight." The man watched her silently for a moment then he finally spoke " It's just coffee." His voice was calm and deep. Lena paused and looked up at him. " well yes…. It was still your coffee." She continued wiping the table embarrassed. She finally step back. " There , mostly fixed." The man glance at the clean surface, Then he looked back at her. His expression, soft and just slightly. "I have survived worst. " Lena laughed nervously. Well that's reassuring, she glanced toward the counter. " I'll get you another one. " that's not necessary." " Nope she said firmly . It absolutely is ." Before he could protest again, Lena Hurried back to the counter . Two minutes later, she returned with two fresh cups of coffeeShe placed one in front of him. The man looked at the cup and then at her." Thank you." Lena hesitated before speaking again . "Mind if I sit for a minute? I feel like I owe you at least five minutes of conversation after committing coffee related crimes." For the first time, the corner of his mouth shifted slightly" Go ahead." She sat down across him. For a moment, the boat listen to the rain tapping against the windows. "I am Lena," she said extending her hand . He looked at her hand for a moment before shaking it . "Adrian " His handshake was firm but brief. "Nice to meet you, Adrian. " Likewise" Lena took a sip of her coffee. " So," She said, glancing Towards the rain outside, " do you always sit in café staring dramatically into storms, or did I interrupt an important moment ?" Adrian looked at the window again. "Something like that." Lena tilted her head. " You are very mysterious." " I have heard that before." " Well ," She said with a small smile I am a journalist. Curiosities is basically my job. Adrian glanced at her again. " A journalist." " Yes." What kind of stories ? "Human stories mostly. Love, relationship, people overcoming challenges." Adrian studied her for a moment. "Love stories." " Yes" she said proudly . And you believed in them? " of course I do." Adrian looked back towards the window , " Love stories never ends the way people expect . " Lena studied his face for a moment. You sound like someone who learned that the hard way.. Adrian didn't respond. Silence filled the space between them. Lena suddenly felt like she had asked him something too personal. " Sorry " she said softly. " it's fine. Decide quietly for a moment. Strangely, it wasn't a uncomfortable. Finally Lena finally stood up, " Well I should probably head home before this storm decides to drown the city." She grabbed her bag " It's was nice meeting you, Adrian." He nodded slightly, you too Lena. She smiled and walked towards the door. The bell chimed again as she stepped outside. Adrian watched her through the window. But now his calm expression had changed. Now he looked concerned. Very concerned. Because Lena Hart had no idea what kind of world she had just stepped into. Across the street under a dim streetlight, a black car sat quietly. Inside the car, a man watched Lena walking away in the rain. His fingers tapped slowly on the steering wheel. He had been watching the café the entire time . A slow smile spread across his face. " "interesting," he murmured. The car engine started quietly. And somewhere deep in the storm. A dangerous story had just begun.
