Chapter 30 - Between control and chaos

The corridor felt like it was breaking apart—not just physically, but emotionally. The tension had reached a point where even silence felt loud. Aarav stood in the center, his body still, his eyes dark, as if something inside him had taken complete control. The creatures around him didn't attack. They waited. As if they already knew what was coming next.

Meera stepped forward slowly, her heartbeat racing but her expression steady. Fear was there—but she didn't let it control her. Not now. Not when Aarav was standing right in front of her, yet feeling so far away.

"Aarav," she called, her voice firm. "Look at me."

For a second, nothing happened.

Then—his gaze shifted. Slowly. Mechanically. It locked onto her, but there was no recognition in his eyes. Just that same cold emptiness.

Rayan swallowed hard from behind. "Yeah… I don't like this," he muttered, gripping his device tighter. "We're running out of time."

Meera didn't move back. She took another step closer. "This isn't you," she said, her voice softer now but filled with determination. "You don't hurt your friends. You don't lose control like this."

Aarav's fingers twitched slightly. A small reaction—but enough.

Inside his mind, something shifted.

Darkness. Endless and heavy. It surrounded him from all sides, like a cage without walls. Aarav stood there alone… or at least, that's what he thought.

Then he saw it.

A figure.

It looked like him—but darker, sharper, more dangerous. Its eyes glowed faintly, carrying the same emptiness that now reflected outside.

"You're weak," the figure said calmly. "That's why you lose."

Aarav clenched his fists. "I'm not you."

"No," it replied with a slight smirk. "You're what's holding me back."

Outside, Aarav's body remained still—but the energy around him started to rise again. The air vibrated, cracks on the walls spreading further.

Rayan quickly activated his device, his hands moving faster than ever. "Meera, I'm trying something," he said. "This might snap him out—but I can't hold it for long."

"Do it," Meera replied instantly. "I'll handle the rest."

Back inside the darkness, Aarav stepped forward, facing the figure directly. "I don't need your power," he said.

The figure laughed quietly. "You already use it," it said. "Every time you fight. Every time you survive. That strength… it's mine."

"That's not true," Aarav snapped.

"Then prove it."

The figure rushed forward.

The impact was immediate. Aarav staggered back, the force overwhelming. This wasn't a normal fight. Every hit felt heavier, as if it was attacking his will itself.

Outside, Aarav's body trembled slightly.

"Now!" Rayan shouted, activating the device fully. A pulse of energy spread through the corridor, disrupting the dark aura around Aarav for a brief moment.

Aarav flinched.

His eyes flickered.

"Aarav!" Meera shouted. "Fight it! You're stronger than this!"

Inside his mind, Aarav dropped to one knee. The figure stood in front of him, completely unfazed.

"You see?" it said. "You can't win."

Aarav's breathing grew heavier. For a moment… it felt like it was over.

Then—something changed.

Meera's voice echoed again.

Not faint. Not distant. Clear.

"You're stronger than this…"

Aarav slowly lifted his head. His expression changed—not into anger, not into fear—but into determination.

"I'm not alone," he said quietly.

The figure's smile faded slightly.

Aarav stood up. His grip tightened. "This power… doesn't control me," he said. "I decide what I become."

Outside, the energy around him shifted again—but this time, it wasn't chaotic. It stabilized. Just slightly—but enough.

Meera saw it immediately. "It's working…" she whispered.

But the moment didn't last.

The boss creature stepped forward again, its presence heavier than ever. Its voice echoed through the corridor, deeper and more powerful than before.

"This struggle is meaningless," it said. "You cannot separate from what you are."

Rayan's device started to flicker. "I'm losing it!" he shouted. "I can't hold the disruption!"

Inside his mind, the figure stepped back—but not defeated. Just waiting.

"You may resist now," it said. "But you will break eventually."

Aarav clenched his fists, breathing hard. He hadn't lost—but he hadn't won either.

Outside, his eyes returned to normal… for a moment.

"Aarav…" Meera said softly.

Then suddenly—

The mark on his wrist flared violently.

A massive surge of energy exploded outward, stronger than anything before. The corridor shook, the walls cracked further, and even the boss creature paused for the first time.

Aarav screamed—this time not in anger, but in pain.

And then… silence.

When the dust settled, Aarav stood still again.

His head slowly lifted.

And his eyes…

turned dark once more.
