Chapter 29 - Out of control

The silence didn't last long. It broke the moment Aarav moved.

Slowly, almost unnaturally, he pushed himself up from the ground. His movements weren't rushed, weren't panicked—they were calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that didn't belong in a battlefield. Dust fell from his clothes as he straightened, his head slightly lowered, his face hidden in shadows.

For a second, no one spoke.

Then Aarav lifted his head.

His eyes weren't the same anymore. The hesitation that once lived there had vanished completely. What remained was something darker… something colder. It wasn't just anger. It wasn't fear. It felt empty—and at the same time, overwhelming.

Rayan took an unconscious step back. "Okay… yeah… that's not normal," he said, his voice barely steady. "Tell me that's still him."

Meera didn't answer immediately. Her eyes were fixed on Aarav, observing every detail. "He's still there," she said finally. "But he's not in control."

Aarav didn't react to their voices. It was as if he wasn't even hearing them anymore. His gaze shifted slowly toward the boss creature. For a moment, the two just stood there, facing each other. The air between them felt heavier, charged with something invisible yet powerful.

Then it happened.

A sudden surge of energy burst from Aarav.

It wasn't controlled. It wasn't clean. It exploded outward like a shockwave, pushing the surrounding creatures back instantly. The air trembled, the walls cracked further, and even the boss creature took a small step back—not out of fear, but acknowledgment.

Rayan's eyes widened. "Did you just see that?!"

Meera's expression darkened. "This isn't just power anymore," she said. "This is something else."

Aarav stepped forward.

The ground beneath his feet seemed to react, darkening slightly with every step. His movements were slow, but each one carried weight. Intent. Without saying a word, he charged.

The boss creature moved to counter, but this time—it wasn't the same. Aarav's speed had increased. His attack landed first, forcing the creature back. The impact echoed through the corridor, sending a ripple through the air.

For the first time, the balance shifted.

"He's… overpowering it?" Rayan said, disbelief clear in his voice.

"Not overpowering," Meera corrected. "He's losing himself."

Aarav didn't stop. He attacked again, faster, more aggressive. There was no hesitation in his movements now, no calculation—just raw force. Every strike felt heavier than the last, driven by something far beyond his control.

The boss creature blocked, but not as easily as before. It adjusted, observing him more carefully now.

Aarav's breathing remained steady. Too steady.

Inside him, the voice returned—clearer than ever.

"This is your true strength…"

Aarav didn't resist this time.

Another surge of energy burst from him, stronger than before. The smaller creatures around them were thrown back again, unable to even come close.

Rayan quickly stepped beside Meera, lowering his voice. "We need to stop him," he said. "If this keeps going—"

"I know," Meera interrupted. Her eyes never left Aarav. "But if we do it wrong… we might lose him completely."

Rayan hesitated for a second, then quickly adjusted his device. "I might be able to disrupt the energy around him," he said. "But I'll need a few seconds."

"Then take them," Meera replied. "I'll keep his focus."

Before Rayan could respond, Aarav moved again—but this time, not toward the boss.

He turned.

Toward them.

For a second, everything froze.

"Aarav…?" Rayan said slowly.

Aarav's gaze locked onto them. There was no recognition in his eyes. No emotion. Just that same cold darkness.

"This is bad," Rayan whispered.

Meera stepped forward.

"Aarav," she called out, her voice steady but firm. "Look at me."

No response.

"You're stronger than this," she continued. "This isn't who you are."

For a brief moment… Aarav stopped.

His fingers twitched slightly.

"Aarav," Meera said again, softer this time. "Come back."

That single moment of hesitation… was enough.

The boss creature moved.

It raised its arm, and instantly, the smaller creatures rushed forward again, aiming directly at Aarav.

Rayan reacted immediately. "I've got it!" he shouted, activating his device. A faint pulse spread through the corridor, interfering with the energy for just a second.

Aarav flinched.

The darkness in his eyes flickered.

Just for a moment.

Meera saw it. "Now!" she shouted. "Aarav, fight it!"

For the first time, Aarav's expression changed. A small crack appeared in that cold, empty look. His breathing became uneven.

But the voice inside him didn't stop.

"You belong to this power…"

Aarav clenched his head slightly, struggling.

The boss creature stepped forward again, its presence stronger than ever.

And then… it spoke.

Not in his mind this time.

Out loud.

"You are not meant to resist," it said, its voice deep and distorted, echoing through the corridor.

Rayan froze. "Okay… yeah… I definitely heard that."

The creature's gaze fixed on Aarav.

"He belongs to us."
