Chapter 23 — Eyes in the Dark

Von-Ra rarely allowed anyone into his private laboratory.

But Kara had a talent for appearing exactly where she wasn't supposed to be suddenly appeared

"Von-Ra?"

Her small voice echoed from the doorway.

Von-Ra turned sharply.

"What are you doing here?"

Kara stepped inside cautiously, her bright eyes wandering across the holographic projections filling the room.

Planetary models.

Energy fracture simulations.

And something far more alarming.

The slowly destabilizing core of Krypton.

"What is that?" Kara asked.

Von-Ra hesitated.

He studied her face.

Too young.

Too innocent.

But Kara was also brilliant. Avoiding the truth entirely would only create more questions.

"It's… a problem I'm trying to solve."

Kara stepped closer, staring at the projection.

"The planet?"

Von-Ra gave a faint smile.

"Yes."

Kara folded her arms proudly.

"Then you'll fix it."

Von-Ra blinked.

"You're very confident."

"You always solve the problems."

Her answer was so simple it almost made him laugh.

But it also strengthened his resolve.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"I will."

Hours later, Von-Ra returned to his research.

His newest simulation completed.

The results made his blood run cold.

The collapse timeline had changed.

What had once been projected as several decades might actually occur far sooner.

Perhaps twenty years.

Maybe less.

Von-Ra leaned forward slowly.

"That's impossible…"

He reran the simulation.

Again.

Again.

The results did not change.

Something inside Krypton's core had begun accelerating the collapse.

Which meant one terrifying truth.

Krypton may not have decades left.

Inside the council complex, the political machinery of Krypton was already shifting.

Councilor Val-Tor of House Val stood before several council members.

House of Val had always specialized in governance, diplomacy, and long-term strategic control of Krypton's political system.

Where House of El led science.

Where House of Zod commanded the military.

Where House of Ze controlled planetary resources.

House of Val controlled power itself.

Val-Tor spoke calmly.

"We have detected unusual research patterns from House of El."

Several councilors turned toward him.

"What kind of research?"

"Planetary genetic databases."

"Biological stabilization models."

"Energy system redesigns."

A murmur spread through the chamber.

One councilor frowned.

"You suspect something?"

Val-Tor folded his hands.

"I suspect curiosity."

Another councilor smirked.

"And curiosity from House of El often becomes… inconvenient."

Val-Tor nodded.

"Precisely."

He activated a projection.

A series of access logs appeared.

Research Access — Von-Ra El

Several council members recognized the name immediately.

"The prodigy."

"The one the academy praised."

Val-Tor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Yes."

"And prodigies often grow ambitious."

One councilor asked quietly,

"What do you suggest?"

Val-Tor answered calmly.

"Observation."

Elsewhere, General Dru-Zod reviewed a series of tactical deployments.

Koryn stood nearby.

"Father… are we preparing for war?"

Dru-Zod did not look away from the projection.

"No."

"Then why move the fleet?"

The general finally turned toward him.

"If Krypton begins to destabilize, chaos will follow."

Koryn understood immediately.

"You're preparing for civil unrest."

Dru-Zod nodded.

"The council will try to control the narrative."

"And people will panic when the truth appears."

Koryn's jaw tightened.

"You believe Von-Ra is right."

"I believe he is intelligent enough to take seriously."

Back in his laboratory, Von-Ra suddenly paused.

Something felt wrong.

It was not a sound.

Not a visible anomaly.

It was something deeper.

A faint sensation at the back of his mind.

A subtle warning.

His Viltrumite bloodline reacted first.

Predators sensed when they were being hunted.

Von-Ra slowly straightened.

"…Strange."

He began reviewing his own research logs.

Every action.

Every access record.

Every system interaction from the past several days.

His eyes moved rapidly across the data.

Then he froze.

The realization hit him instantly.

Of course.

Every system access created a record.

And the council controlled the central archives.

Von-Ra leaned back slowly.

"…I've been careless."

Not unintelligent.

Not reckless.

Simply inexperienced.

A genius he might be.

But political warfare was something different.

And the council had been playing that game for centuries.

If they chose to investigate deeply enough…

They would eventually uncover everything.

Von-Ra closed his eyes briefly.

Then he smiled faintly.

"Good."

Because now he understood the battlefield.

He began immediately.

Erasing certain logs.

Masking others.

Redirecting system queries.

Creating false research trails.

Von-Ra worked carefully.

Not to hide everything.

But to bury the truth beneath layers of harmless curiosity.

Energy research.

Agricultural biology.

Atmospheric simulations.

Perfectly normal scientific exploration.

Anyone monitoring him would see only a brilliant but overly curious young scientist.

Von-Ra finished the final adjustment and leaned back.

His golden eyes reflected the projection of Krypton slowly breaking apart.

"Lesson learned."

Saving Krypton would not only require science.

It would require strategy.

Deception.

And patience.

Because if the council discovered what he truly knew…

They might destroy him long before Krypton ever collapsed.

Von-Ra stared at the planetary model.

"For now," he whispered.

"We play their game."
