Chapter 39 — The Final Surrender
The sky above Krypton was breaking apart.
Cracks spread across the planet like veins of fire. Entire continents trembled as the core beneath them roared in instability. Massive fragments of land floated into the air before collapsing back down into oceans of molten rock.
But above the dying world…
Hope was escaping.
Dozens of pods and ships streaked through the atmosphere, leaving blazing trails behind them as they forced their way past Krypton's collapsing gravity.
Among them were the vessels launched by the House of El, House of Zod, and House of Ze.
Inside those pods were the last surviving Kryptonian civilians.
Children.
Scientists.
Workers.
Families who had been lucky enough to reach the launch sites before everything fell apart.
The Council's defensive cannons fired relentlessly, attempting to shoot the escaping ships from the sky.
Energy beams cut through the clouds.
Several pods were destroyed.
But many more slipped past the blockade.
And finally…
The last escape ship broke through Krypton's atmosphere.
Silence fell across the battlefield.
The warriors of the House of Zod, who had been holding the Council's forces back, slowly lowered their weapons.
General Dru-Zod looked up at the burning sky.
"They made it."
Faora stood beside him, blood staining her armor from the brutal fighting.
"Yes, General."
Zod exhaled slowly.
"Then our duty is finished."
He turned toward the surrounding soldiers.
"Stand down."
His warriors hesitated.
But Zod raised his hand firmly.
"That is an order."
One by one, the soldiers of the House of Zod lowered their weapons.
Across the battlefield, Jor-El, Zor-El, Alura, and Lara also stepped forward.
None of them resisted.
None of them attempted to escape.
They surrendered.
The Council soldiers surrounded them cautiously, confused by the sudden surrender.
The Head Councilor stepped forward slowly, his face twisted with suspicion.
"You stop fighting… now?"
He looked up toward the sky where the last Kryptonian ships had disappeared.
"You allowed them to escape."
Zod crossed his arms calmly.
"Yes."
The Councilor narrowed his eyes.
"You could have continued resisting."
Zod said nothing.
Instead, his mind drifted back to a conversation from three years earlier.
A conversation with someone who had already foreseen this moment.
Flashback — Three Years Earlier
Inside the great chamber of the House of El, several of Krypton's most influential figures had gathered.
Present were:
General Dru-Zod, Jor-El, Zor-El, Alura, Lara, and several allied elders.
Standing before them was Von-Ra El, preparing for his departure from Krypton.
His expression was calm, but his eyes carried a heavy seriousness.
"General Zod… Aunt… Uncle… Father… Mother… Elders."
Everyone turned their attention toward him.
Von-Ra activated a holographic projection of the galaxy.
"When the time comes…"
His voice grew quieter.
"And you truly cannot repair Krypton's planetary core…"
Silence filled the chamber.
Von-Ra continued.
"Save as many Kryptonians as possible."
He pointed toward several distant star systems on the projection.
"Send them to our old outposts across the galaxy."
Zod raised an eyebrow.
"The ancient colonies?"
"Yes."
Von-Ra nodded.
"They were originally built to sustain Kryptonian populations. There is still a chance some remain functional."
Jor-El studied the star map carefully.
Then he asked the obvious question.
"Why not send them to Earth… the same world you are going to?"
Several elders nodded in agreement.
Von-Ra shook his head slowly.
"Because Earth is not a free world."
The room became silent.
"Earth has been guarded since ancient times."
Zor-El frowned.
"Guarded… by whom?"
Von-Ra zoomed in on the blue planet.
"The Asgardian pantheon."
"The Olympus Pantheon"
"The Jade Emperor and many more"
Murmurs spread through the chamber.
"And beyond them…"
He expanded the projection further.
"The blue-skinned beings who lead the Green Lantern Corps."
Jor-El immediately understood.
"The Guardians of the Universe."
Von-Ra nodded.
"Yes."
He folded his arms.
"If a large Kryptonian population suddenly arrives on Earth…"
"There is a very high chance we will attract the attention of multiple cosmic powers."
Alura spoke quietly.
"You believe they would attack us?"
Von-Ra answered calmly.
"They might."
He then looked directly at everyone in the room.
"There is another reason."
Everyone waited for him to continue.
Von-Ra spoke slowly.
"All the gods believe that Earth is the center of the universe."
"Faith from countless civilizations is concentrated there."
He paused.
"And faith is what makes gods stronger."
Several elders frowned.
Von-Ra continued.
"If a race of super-powered Kryptonians suddenly appears on Earth…"
He looked around the room.
"The people of that world might begin to worship us."
Silence filled the chamber.
"And if that happens…"
"We will become a thorn in the eyes of every pantheon that protects that planet."
Zor-El sighed.
"So Earth is a political battlefield."
"Yes."
Von-Ra nodded.
"That is why only a few Kryptonians should go there."
Zor-El crossed his arms.
"Very well."
"We will follow your plan."
Then he asked another question.
"But what happens to us afterward?"
Von-Ra's expression grew serious.
"You must surrender to the Council."
Everyone in the room looked shocked.
"Surrender?" Zod repeated.
"Yes."
Von-Ra continued calmly.
"They will never tolerate what you have done."
"They will imprison you in the Phantom Zone."
Lara frowned.
"That is a prison beyond space and time."
Von-Ra nodded.
"Yes."
"But do not worry."
Everyone waited.
"The Phantom Zone will not hold forever."
He looked toward the hologram of Krypton.
"When Krypton explodes…"
"The shockwave will destabilize the Phantom Zone's dimensional core."
Zod's eyes widened slightly.
"You believe the prisoners will escape."
"Yes."
Von-Ra nodded.
"When that happens…"
He pointed toward Earth.
"Come find me."
Silence filled the chamber.
Finally, Zor-El nodded slowly.
"Very well."
"We will do as you planned."
Present — The Fall of Krypton
The flashback faded.
Back on the battlefield…
The Head Councilor raised his weapon toward the remaining leaders.
"Surrender now… or die."
Zod looked toward Jor-El, Zor-El, Alura, and Lara.
They all nodded slightly.
The plan had already been decided years ago.
Zod turned back to the Council soldiers.
"We surrender."
Energy restraints were immediately placed around them.
The Councilor smirked.
"You finally understand your place."
But Zod simply looked up toward the sky.
