Chapter 27 - The Adaptive Challenger

Volume 2 — Chapter 2: The Adaptive Challenger

The battlefield stretched endlessly beneath the dark sky.

Mountains had been shattered. The land was carved with massive craters as if titans had once battled here. Broken stone and dust floated in the air, still unsettled from the tremendous forces that had previously erupted across the terrain.

At the center of this devastated landscape stood the entity that had caused it all.

The Creator Descendant.

Its form constantly shifted between light and shadow, fragments of energy flowing across its body like liquid reality. It looked humanoid, but its existence felt fundamentally different from any living creature.

Ancient.

Purposeful.

Created for a single role.

To challenge.

Across from it stood Icarus Grimm.

His black wings of reality stretched wide behind him, fragments of space shimmering across their surface like broken mirrors reflecting an endless void. The wings moved subtly, almost breathing, as if they possessed their own awareness.

Seraphine stood several steps behind him, watching the entity with clear interest.

"So that's the thing Nexus detected," she murmured.

Her eyes glowed faintly with void energy as she analyzed the creature.

"It doesn't feel alive in the normal sense."

"It is not," Icarus replied calmly.

The Creator Descendant suddenly stepped forward.

The moment it moved, the ground cracked beneath its feet.

Nexus spoke inside Icarus' mind.

[Adaptive analysis progressing.]

[Target power level adjustment in progress.]

The entity's body suddenly shifted.

Its structure became denser.

More stable.

More dangerous.

Seraphine raised an eyebrow.

"Oh… it's already adjusting."

The entity's head tilted slightly toward Icarus, almost as if it were studying him.

Then—

It disappeared.

The ground beneath Icarus exploded as the entity reappeared directly in front of him.

A fist made of condensed energy shot toward his chest.

Before the attack could connect—

One of Icarus' wings reacted.

The wing moved instantly, faster than thought.

A blade-like shard of warped reality extended outward, intercepting the attack.

BOOM.

The collision sent a shockwave across the battlefield.

Dust erupted into the sky.

Seraphine slid backward several meters from the pressure alone, though she remained perfectly balanced.

"Fast," she muttered.

The Creator Descendant retreated instantly, landing several meters away.

Its body shifted again.

Analyzing.

Learning.

Icarus stepped forward calmly, completely unfazed by the attack.

"You will need to do better."

Void energy surged from his body.

The air around him distorted.

The temperature dropped sharply as the space itself seemed to react to his presence.

The Creator Descendant moved again.

This time it attacked with overwhelming speed.

Dozens of strikes were unleashed in less than a second.

Each punch carried enough force to destroy stone mountains.

But every strike was intercepted.

Icarus barely moved.

His wings moved for him.

Fragments of space unfolded like living shields, blocking each attack automatically.

CLANG.

CRACK.

BOOM.

The battlefield trembled as the rapid collisions echoed like thunder.

Seraphine watched the exchange carefully.

Her lips curled into a small smile.

"You're not even trying yet."

The Creator Descendant suddenly jumped backward, increasing the distance between them.

Its body pulsed with energy.

Then—

It changed.

Its arms extended and reshaped into massive blades of light.

Without hesitation, it launched forward again.

This time the attack came from above.

The blade swung downward like a falling star.

Icarus raised one hand.

Void energy gathered instantly.

A sphere of darkness formed in his palm.

The blade collided with the sphere.

The impact created a deafening explosion.

The ground beneath them shattered, forming a crater nearly fifty meters wide.

When the dust cleared—

Icarus was still standing exactly where he had been.

Completely unmoved.

Seraphine slowly walked forward, stepping onto the edge of the crater.

"Wow."

She looked down at the cracked battlefield.

"That thing hits pretty hard."

The Creator Descendant retreated again, but this time it did not attack immediately.

Instead—

Its body began glowing brighter.

Nexus spoke again.

[Adaptive threshold increasing.]

[Opponent power scaling continuing.]

Seraphine frowned slightly.

"So it's getting stronger every time it fights."

"Yes."

"That's annoying."

The entity suddenly raised both arms.

A massive wave of energy erupted outward.

The surrounding ground lifted into the air as gravity distorted violently.

Thousands of rocks began floating.

Then they shot toward Icarus like a storm of bullets.

Seraphine stepped aside calmly.

"You've got this."

Icarus simply spread his wings slightly.

The moment the rocks entered his range—

The wings reacted.

Reality itself twisted.

Every projectile disintegrated before touching him, crushed by invisible distortions in space.

The Creator Descendant attacked again.

But this time—

Icarus moved first.

He vanished.

Appearing instantly behind the entity.

Before it could react—

His hand struck its back.

The impact didn't create a simple shockwave.

The air collapsed.

Void energy erupted outward like a collapsing star.

The ground beneath them shattered violently.

The Creator Descendant was launched across the battlefield, crashing through several massive stone formations before finally stopping nearly a kilometer away.

Seraphine whistled softly.

"Okay, that one looked like it hurt."

But the entity stood again.

Its body shifted once more.

Now its structure had become far more stable than before.

It had adapted.

Seraphine crossed her arms.

"This thing really doesn't give up."

Icarus began walking toward it slowly.

Each step caused faint cracks to appear across the ground.

The entity rushed forward again.

This time the battle truly began.

They collided in the center of the battlefield.

Punches and strikes erupted like storms.

Each clash shattered the ground beneath them.

Mountains in the distance trembled from the shockwaves.

Seraphine watched from the side, carefully observing the fight.

"Still holding back," she murmured.

She could feel it clearly.

Icarus wasn't fighting seriously yet.

The Creator Descendant attacked again with a spinning strike.

Icarus caught the attack mid-motion.

His grip crushed the entity's arm instantly.

Then he threw it into the ground with overwhelming force.

The crater that formed this time was enormous.

The battlefield shook violently.

Dust clouds rose hundreds of meters into the sky.

Seraphine laughed quietly.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

Icarus didn't answer.

But his eyes remained cold.

Focused.

The Creator Descendant slowly rose from the crater again.

Still adapting.

Still evolving.

Seraphine tilted her head slightly.

"This might take a while."

Icarus finally spoke again.

"Yes."

His wings spread wider.

Void energy surged around him like a growing storm.

The battle had only just begun.

And neither side intended to stop anytime soon.
