Chapter 31: Kumbhakarna Awakens
The War of Lanka raged for many days.
The fields outside the golden city were covered with broken chariots, shattered weapons, fallen trees, and the bodies of countless Vanaras and Rakshasas.
Although Ravana's army fought with great courage, Rama's forces continued to advance.
Many of Lanka's greatest commanders had fallen.
Prahasta, Akampana, and several powerful Rakshasa generals were defeated.
The confidence of Lanka slowly began to fade.
Inside the royal palace, Ravana sat upon his golden throne.
His face reflected both anger and चिंता.
The ministers stood in silence.
For the first time, the mighty king realized that this war would not end easily.
At that moment, one minister spoke.
"My Lord, there is still one warrior whose strength equals that of an entire army."
"Awaken Kumbhakarna."
The entire court became silent.
Kumbhakarna was Ravana's younger brother.
He was a giant among Rakshasas, blessed with immense strength.
According to a boon that had later turned into a curse through divine intervention, Kumbhakarna slept for long periods and awoke only for a short time.
Fortunately for Lanka, the time had come when he could be awakened.
Ravana immediately ordered thousands of Rakshasas to wake him.
Deep within a massive mountain-like chamber, Kumbhakarna slept.
His gigantic body covered the floor like a mountain.
Each breath sounded like thunder.
The Rakshasas began their efforts.
They blew mighty conches.
They beat enormous drums.
They struck cymbals.
They shouted his name.
They brought elephants to push against him.
They rolled huge logs across his body.
Still, Kumbhakarna continued sleeping.
Hours passed.
Finally, after countless efforts, the giant slowly opened his eyes.
His yawn shook the palace.
The earth trembled beneath his movement.
The Rakshasas rejoiced.
Kumbhakarna rose from his bed.
As always after his long sleep, he was overcome with hunger.
Mountains of food were brought before him.
Thousands of fruits.
Countless animals.
Large vessels of cooked rice.
Sweet drinks.
After satisfying his hunger, he entered Ravana's royal court.
Seeing his elder brother, Kumbhakarna bowed respectfully.
"My brother," he asked,
"Why have I been awakened before my time?"
Ravana explained everything.
He spoke of Surpanakha's humiliation.
He described the abduction of Sita.
He told of Hanuman burning Lanka.
He recounted the arrival of Rama's army and the terrible war now threatening the kingdom.
Kumbhakarna listened quietly.
When Ravana finished, the giant remained silent for several moments.
Then he spoke honestly.
"My brother..."
"You have acted against Dharma."
"You should never have abducted another man's wife."
"Many wise men, including Vibhishana, advised you to return Sita."
"You refused."
"Now this great war is the result of your own actions."
The court fell silent.
No one had dared speak so openly before Ravana.
The king's face darkened with anger.
"So even you criticize me?"
Kumbhakarna lowered his head.
"I speak only the truth."
"But you are my elder brother."
"My duty is to stand beside my family."
"Even though I know this war was born from Adharma, I cannot abandon you in your hour of need."
Ravana's anger softened.
He embraced his brother.
For a brief moment, the love between the two brothers overcame the pride that had long divided their family.
Kumbhakarna then prepared for battle.
He wore enormous armor.
He lifted his mighty spear.
His footsteps shook the earth.
When the Vanara army saw the gigantic warrior emerging from Lanka's gates, many were filled with fear.
He stood like a moving mountain.
His roar echoed across the battlefield.
Trees bent under the force of his voice.
The oceans themselves seemed to tremble.
Sugriva rallied the Vanaras.
"Do not fear!"
"We fight for Dharma."
Hanuman stood fearlessly before the giant.
Lakshmana prepared his bow.
Rama calmly watched Kumbhakarna approach.
He understood that this was no ordinary Rakshasa.
Kumbhakarna was brave.
He was loyal.
He possessed great wisdom.
But his loyalty had bound him to an unrighteous cause.
Rama silently prayed for the warrior standing before him.
For he knew that even the noblest warrior cannot escape the consequences of fighting on the side of Adharma.
The battlefield fell silent.
The giant raised his spear.
The Vanaras prepared for the fiercest battle they had yet faced.
The clash between Rama's army and Kumbhakarna was about to begin.
It would become one of the most unforgettable battles in the entire Ramayana.
