Lila's POV
The classroom feels strangely quiet.
Not silent exactly, but the kind of quiet that sits beneath the scratching of pens and the occasional cough. Lila tries to focus on the words written across the whiteboard, but it's nearly impossible.
She can feel him beside her.
Ethan Carter.
The most talked-about guy in the entire school.
And she is sitting right next to him.
Her hands grip her notebook as if it might float away. She keeps her eyes locked on the page in front of her, pretending to read something she has already read three times.
Why is my heart beating like this?
She steals the tiniest glance sideways.
Ethan leans back slightly in his chair, one hand lazily twirling a pen between his fingers. His expression is calm, almost bored, but there's something confident about the way he sits. Like he belongs anywhere he goes.
Lila quickly looks back at her notebook.
Don't stare. Don't stare.
But Cassandra was right earlier.
He really is… unfairly good looking.
Before her thoughts can spiral further, Ethan speaks.
His voice is low and relaxed.
"So… you're Lila, right?"
Her brain freezes.
He knows her name?
Lila turns slightly, surprised.
"Y-yeah."
She mentally scolds herself for stuttering.
Smooth, Lila. Very smooth.
Ethan smiles faintly.
"I'm Ethan."
As if she didn't already know.
"I know," she blurts.
The moment the words leave her mouth, her face turns red.
Fantastic.
Ethan chuckles quietly.
Not the loud teasing laugh she expected. Just a small amused sound.
"Well… that makes introductions easier."
Lila finally relaxes a little.
For a moment, they sit in comfortable silence while the teacher writes something on the board.
Then Ethan leans slightly closer.
"So how come I've never seen you around before?"
Lila blinks.
"I've been here since freshman year."
"Really?"
His eyebrow lifts.
"Guess I wasn't paying attention."
Something about that answer makes her smile.
But before she can respond, the classroom door swings open.
And suddenly the atmosphere changes.
It's subtle.
But noticeable.
Heads turn.
Whispers start moving through the room like a ripple across water.
Lila glances toward the door.
Three girls walk in.
At the center of them is someone impossible to ignore.
Tall. Elegant. Perfect posture.
Her blonde hair falls smoothly down her back, shining under the classroom lights like it belongs in a shampoo commercial. Her uniform is perfectly fitted, and she walks with the confidence of someone who knows the entire world is watching her.
Behind her are two girls who look equally polished, though it's obvious they orbit around her like satellites.
Lila leans slightly toward Cassandra across the room and whispers,
"Who is that?"
Cassandra's eyes widen dramatically.
"You're kidding."
Lila shakes her head.
Cassandra whispers back like she's explaining a dangerous creature.
"That… is Victoria Hale."
The name spreads through Lila's mind like ink in water.
Victoria Hale.
Cassandra continues.
"Queen of the school. Captain of the cheer squad. Rich. Pretty. And terrifying."
"Terrifying?"
"Just wait."
Lila glances back at the girl.
Victoria walks down the aisle slowly, her eyes scanning the room with calm authority.
Then something changes.
Her gaze lands on Ethan.
And she smiles.
Not a shy smile.
Not a friendly one.
A claiming smile.
She walks straight toward his desk.
Lila suddenly feels very aware of the fact that she is sitting beside him.
Victoria stops directly in front of them.
Her eyes flick to Lila for exactly half a second.
Cold.
Assessing.
Then she turns her attention back to Ethan.
"Ethan."
Her voice is smooth and confident.
Ethan sighs quietly.
"Morning, Victoria."
The tone of his voice is polite.
But tired.
Like this conversation has happened a thousand times before.
Victoria leans slightly against his desk.
"You disappeared after practice yesterday."
"Had stuff to do."
"You could've texted."
Ethan shrugs.
Lila pretends to look at her notebook again, though she can feel Victoria's presence like a spotlight.
One of Victoria's friends whispers loudly enough for nearby students to hear.
"That's the new girl sitting with Ethan?"
The other girl giggles.
Victoria's eyes slide toward Lila again.
Slow.
Sharp.
Like a blade measuring distance.
"Well," Victoria says calmly, "isn't that interesting."
Ethan's POV
Ethan knew this would happen eventually.
Victoria Hale never liked surprises.
And seeing another girl sitting beside him clearly counts as one.
He taps his pen lightly against the desk.
"Victoria," he says quietly, "class is starting."
She doesn't move.
Her arms cross elegantly.
"You didn't answer my message last night."
"Because I didn't want to argue."
"We weren't arguing."
"We always end up arguing."
That earns a small laugh from a few nearby students.
Victoria doesn't laugh.
Her expression tightens slightly.
Her friends step closer.
Madison and Claire.
The school unofficially calls them The Roses.
Beautiful.
Sharp.
And covered in thorns.
Madison tilts her head toward Lila.
"So… what's your name?"
Lila looks up slowly.
"…Lila."
Claire smiles sweetly.
"Cute."
But the sweetness feels fake.
Victoria finally straightens up.
She studies Lila again.
From her shoes.
To her hair.
To the way she sits nervously beside Ethan.
Then Victoria smiles.
"Oh," she says softly.
"I remember hearing about you."
Lila blinks.
"You… do?"
Victoria nods slowly.
"The quiet girl."
Ethan frowns slightly.
Victoria continues casually.
"The one who never talks to anyone."
Her eyes flick briefly toward Ethan.
"I didn't realize you two were… friends."
"We're not," Ethan says immediately.
Lila's heart drops slightly at how quickly he says it.
Then Ethan adds,
"She just needed a seat."
Victoria watches his face carefully.
Like she's searching for something hidden there.
Then she laughs softly.
"Well."
Her voice carries through the classroom.
"That's good."
She leans slightly toward Lila.
Because the last girl who tried getting close to Ethan…
didn't have a great time here.
The meaning behind the words lands heavily in the air.
Ethan's expression darkens.
"Victoria."
But she straightens up again before he can say anything else.
The teacher clears his throat.
"Ladies, if you're finished socializing, we have a class to start."
Victoria gives Ethan one last look.
Then she walks back to her seat near the window with Madison and Claire following.
The whispers start immediately.
"Did you see that?"
"She talked to her."
"That girl's doomed."
Marcus leans over from the row behind Ethan.
"Bro."
Ethan doesn't look back.
"Don't."
Marcus continues anyway.
"You know everyone still thinks you and Victoria are secretly dating."
Ethan finally turns.
"We're not."
"Yeah but the rumor never died."
Marcus glances toward Lila.
"Now she's involved."
Ethan exhales slowly.
Great.
Just great.
Lila's POV
The class continues.
But Lila barely hears anything.
Her mind keeps replaying Victoria's words.
The last girl who tried getting close to Ethan… didn't have a great time here.
She risks a glance behind her.
Victoria is laughing with her friends.
But every once in a while…
Her eyes drift forward.
Straight toward Lila.
Lila quickly looks away.
She whispers to Cassandra after class ends.
"Is she always like that?"
Cassandra laughs nervously.
"That was her being polite."
"Polite?"
"Victoria's had a crush on Ethan since forever."
"I thought you said they dated."
Cassandra shrugs.
"Depends who you ask."
"Some people say they were together."
"Some say they almost were."
"But Victoria acts like Ethan belongs to her."
Lila glances across the room.
Victoria is already walking toward Ethan again.
Cassandra lowers her voice.
"And she hates competition."
Lila swallows.
"But I'm not competing."
Cassandra gives her a look.
"You're sitting next to Ethan Carter."
She gestures around the classroom.
"That alone puts you on Victoria Hale's radar."
Across the room, Victoria links her arm casually through Ethan's.
Like it's the most natural thing in the world.
Lila quickly looks down.
Something strange twists in her chest.
She doesn't know why.
After all…
She barely knows him.
But the image still lingers in her mind.
Ethan notices Lila looking.
For a moment, their eyes meet.
Victoria notices too.
And her smile slowly fades.
Across the room…
A silent war has just begun.
