Chapter 4 - When Court Meets Coffee ...

The final bell rang through the halls like freedom itself.

Lockers slammed. Conversations burst open. Chairs scraped against the floor. Students poured out of classrooms like a colorful flood escaping a dam.

Lila packed her books quietly.

While everyone else rushed around talking about parties, practice, gossip, and homework they probably wouldn't do anyway, she slipped her notebook into her bag with careful movements.

She liked quiet exits.

Less attention.

Less chaos.

Her best friend Cassandra leaned against the desk beside her, spinning a pen between her fingers.

"Girl," Cassandra whispered dramatically, eyes sparkling with gossip energy. "You survived another day in the jungle."

Lila smiled faintly.

"I'm pretty sure it's just a high school."

"Same thing," Cassandra said immediately. "Both have predators."

Lila laughed softly.

Just as she stood up to leave, someone blocked her path.

A tall guy.

Broad shoulders.

Messy dark hair.

A confident smile that said he practiced smiling in mirrors.

Cassandra's eyebrows shot up so fast they could've flown off her face.

"Oh?" she murmured under her breath.

The guy rubbed the back of his neck, looking slightly nervous but determined.

"Hey… uh… you're Lila, right?"

Lila blinked.

She had seen him around school before but they had never spoken.

"Yes?"

"I'm Jason," he said quickly. "You're new here, yeah? I just thought… maybe I could show you around sometime. Or we could hang out or something."

Cassandra's eyes were basically fireworks.

Lila, however, felt panic tap dance in her chest.

Attention like this always made her uncomfortable.

She gave him a polite but distant smile.

"That's kind of you, but I think I'm okay."

Jason chuckled awkwardly.

"Come on. It doesn't have to be a big thing. Just friends."

Lila shook her head gently.

"I appreciate it, really. But I have somewhere to be after school."

It wasn't a lie.

Her shift started soon.

Jason looked disappointed but nodded.

"Alright. Maybe another time."

She gave a small nod and slipped past him, walking quickly toward the hallway exit.

Cassandra leaned closer to Jason as Lila left.

"Dude," she whispered, "that was brave."

Meanwhile, across the hallway...

Ethan had seen everything.

And he did not like it.

Not one bit.

He leaned against his locker, arms folded, jaw tight.

His teammates were talking around him, but their voices faded into background noise.

Jason asking Lila out replayed in his head like an annoying song stuck on repeat.

Why was that guy talking to her?

Why did it bother him so much?

He didn't even know her.

Right?

His eyes followed Lila as she walked away.

Something sharp twisted in his chest.

Jealousy.

And he hated it.

Beside him stood the undisputed queen of the school.

Victoria Hale.

Tall.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect hair.

Perfect posture.

Perfect everything.

Or at least that was the image she carefully built.

Victoria crossed her arms, her manicured nails tapping lightly against her sleeve.

She had also seen the interaction between Jason and Lila.

But more importantly…

She had seen Ethan staring.

Her lips curled into a slow, calculating smile.

Beside her stood her two loyal shadows.

Madison and Claire.

Madison leaned closer, rolling her eyes.

"Oh please," she scoffed. "She's just the quiet new girl."

Claire flipped her glossy hair.

"Probably one of those girls who thinks being mysterious makes her interesting."

Victoria didn't laugh.

Her eyes stayed locked on Ethan.

Still watching Lila walk away.

Still distracted.

Her smile faded just a little.

Rumors had floated around school for months.

That Victoria Hale and Ethan Carter used to date.

The truth?

They never officially did.

But Victoria had never bothered correcting anyone.

The rumor was useful.

It kept girls away.

And Victoria liked control.

A lot.

Her eyes slowly followed Lila's retreating figure down the hallway.

Something cold flickered in them.

Then Victoria spoke calmly.

"Keep an eye on her."

Madison smirked.

"Oh, we will."

Claire giggled.

"This might actually make school interesting."

Victoria's lips curved again.

But this time…

The smile had teeth.

Lila walked quickly down the sidewalk outside the school.

The afternoon sun painted everything gold.

Students laughed around her, cars honked, music blasted from someone's phone speaker.

But her thoughts were somewhere else.

She checked the time.

Her shift started in twenty minutes.

Plenty of time.

She adjusted the strap of her bag and headed toward the bus stop.

Her life after school looked very different from most students'.

No parties.

No hanging out.

No gossip circles.

Just responsibility.

Her father had left three years ago.

Left their small family like someone walking out of a movie halfway through.

One day he was there.

The next he had "found someone else."

That sentence still stung.

Now it was just Lila, her younger brother Noah, and their mother.

Her mom worked long hours at a hospital.

So Lila worked part-time to help out.

The bus ride was quiet.

And she liked it that way.

The small coffee shop sat on the corner of a cozy street.

A little bell chimed as Lila stepped inside.

Warm air wrapped around her instantly.

Coffee beans.

Vanilla syrup.

Fresh pastries.

The smell felt like comfort.

Her coworker Maya waved from behind the counter.

"Lila! You're just in time!"

Lila smiled and tied on her apron.

"Busy?"

"Always," Maya said dramatically. "Apparently caffeine is humanity's life force."

Lila laughed softly and got to work.

Taking orders.

Making drinks.

Wiping tables.

The rhythm of the job calmed her.

It was simple.

Predictable.

Unlike school.

Meanwhile...

Across town.

The sound of sneakers squeaking on polished wood echoed through the gym.

Basketballs bounced.

Players shouted.

The energy was electric.

At the center of it all was Ethan.

Fast.

Focused.

Unstoppable.

He dribbled past two defenders like they were standing still.

Jumped.

Shot.

Swish.

The net snapped like applause.

His teammates cheered.

"LET'S GO!"

Practice continued for another hour.

By the end, sweat soaked through everyone's shirts.

But Ethan looked like he could play another game.

The coach walked toward him as the others packed up.

Coach Reynolds was a tall man with a voice like thunder and eyes that saw potential everywhere.

"Ethan."

Ethan grabbed a towel.

"Yeah?"

Coach crossed his arms.

"We need to talk."

Ethan already knew where this was going.

Again.

"Bigger agencies are watching you," the coach said seriously. "College scouts. Professional recruiters. Opportunities most players would kill for."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"I know."

"So why aren't you taking them?"

Ethan tossed the towel over his shoulder.

"I'm just not ready."

Coach sighed.

"You've been saying that for months."

"I mean it."

The coach studied him carefully.

"You have talent people dream about."

Ethan shrugged.

"I just want to play."

"Play?" Coach repeated. "You could be a star."

Ethan picked up his bag.

"Maybe someday."

Then he walked toward the locker room.

His best friend Marcus was waiting outside.

Marcus was the complete opposite of Ethan.

Loud.

Energetic.

And impossible to ignore.

He threw an arm over Ethan's shoulder.

"Let me guess," Marcus said. "Coach tried recruiting speech number 400."

"Something like that."

Marcus laughed.

"Dude, if I had your talent I'd already be signing contracts."

Ethan smirked.

"You also can't dribble without tripping."

"Details," Marcus said proudly.

They stepped outside the gym into the cool evening air.

Marcus stretched.

"I'm starving."

Ethan nodded.

"Same."

Marcus snapped his fingers.

"Coffee shop down the street?"

Ethan shrugged.

"Sure."

They walked with two other teammates, joking and arguing the whole way.

The bell above the coffee shop door chimed as they entered.

Warm light spilled across the floor.

Marcus inhaled dramatically.

"Smells like heaven."

Then Ethan looked up.

And froze.

Behind the counter...

Lila stood holding a tray of coffee cups.

For a second the entire room faded.

Just like earlier in the hallway.

But this time it was worse.

Because now she was wearing a simple apron, her hair tied back slightly, a few loose strands framing her face.

And somehow...

She looked even prettier.

His brain completely forgot how to function.

Marcus noticed instantly.

He followed Ethan's gaze.

Then his eyes widened.

Then a slow, evil grin spread across his face.

"Ohhhhh."

One of the other teammates leaned closer.

"What?"

Marcus whispered loudly,

"Bro. Ethan's brain just left his body."

Ethan elbowed him.

"Shut up."

Too late.

Marcus leaned across the counter dramatically.

"Hi there!"

Lila looked up politely.

"Welcome! What can I—"

She stopped.

Recognition flickered across her face.

"The basketball player," she said quietly before she could stop herself.

Marcus gasped like someone had revealed a national secret.

"YOU KNOW HIM?!"

Ethan turned red immediately.

"Marcus."

Lila looked slightly embarrassed.

"I mean… everyone at school knows him."

Marcus slapped the counter.

"Celebrity confirmed."

Ethan rubbed his face.

"I hate you."

Lila couldn't help smiling a little.

Marcus leaned toward Ethan and whispered loudly enough for the entire planet to hear.

"Dude why are you blushing?"

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm not!"

His ears were absolutely red.

The teammates burst into laughter.

Lila tried very hard not to laugh but failed.

And that somehow made Ethan even more nervous.

Marcus pointed dramatically.

"LOOK! SHE MADE HIM SHY!"

"Order your drink," Ethan muttered.

Marcus grinned.

"Five iced coffees please."

Lila nodded, still smiling.

As she started preparing the drinks, Ethan stood awkwardly by the counter.

His heart was doing weird gymnastics.

Marcus leaned closer again.

"So… you like her?"

Ethan nearly choked.

"I do not."

"Your face says otherwise."

"Stop talking."

Marcus smirked like a man who had just discovered the greatest entertainment of his life.

Across the shop, Lila placed the drinks on the counter.

When Ethan stepped forward to grab his, their fingers brushed slightly.

Both froze for half a second.

Marcus saw that too.

He clapped his hands.

"Oh this is GOLD."

Ethan grabbed the drinks quickly.

"We're leaving."

Marcus laughed all the way to the table.

And Ethan's heart was still beating way too fast.

Meanwhile behind the counter…

Lila quietly wondered why the most confident guy in school suddenly looked so adorably nervous around her.
