Chapter 23: After the Lights Fade
Outside the Venue — Late Night
New York City
(Jay-jay's POV)
The noise followed us out.
Not as loud as before—but still there.
Cameras.
Voices.
Questions thrown into the night like they deserved answers.
"Jay-jay! One more photo!"
"Keifer, look this way!"
"Are you two moving in immediately?"
I kept walking.
Composed. Calm. Controlled.
But the second we reached the car—
The door shut.
And everything went quiet.
Just like that.
I leaned back against the seat, exhaling slowly.
"…that was a lot."
Beside me, Keifer Watson loosened his tie slightly.
"You handled it well."
"I always do."
"I know."
I glanced at him.
"You didn't."
He raised an eyebrow.
"…didn't what?"
"Handle it well."
"I did."
"You practically glared at that man across the table."
"He deserved it."
"That's not professional."
"He wasn't being professional."
I sighed, shaking my head slightly.
"There it is again."
"What?"
"That."
"What?"
"…you getting jealous."
He didn't deny it.
Instead, he leaned back slightly, looking ahead.
"I told you already."
"Yes, you did."
"And?"
"And nothing."
I crossed my arms lightly.
"I just didn't expect it to keep happening."
He turned his head slightly toward me.
"It's not going to stop."
I blinked.
"…what?"
"I don't like people looking at you like that."
"You can't control that."
"I know."
"Then?"
"I can control how I respond."
I studied him for a second.
"You're serious."
"Yes."
Silence.
Then I leaned back again.
"…you're exhausting."
"And you're still sitting here."
"…unfortunately."
That made him almost smile.
The Drive
The city lights moved past us in silence.
Reflections shifting across the glass.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
But it wasn't uncomfortable.
It was… full.
Like everything that happened tonight was still settling between us.
Then—
"You smiled."
I turned slightly.
"…what?"
"On the carpet."
"Oh."
"And inside."
"So?"
"You weren't pretending."
I looked out the window.
"…no."
"Why?"
I hesitated.
Then—
"…because I didn't need to."
That made him quiet.
Completely quiet.
And for some reason—
That felt important.
Mariano Penthouse — Night
The moment we walked in—
Everything felt different again.
No cameras.
No expectations.
No audience.
Just us.
I kicked off my heels immediately.
"I'm never wearing those again."
"You will."
"I won't."
"You will."
"I won't."
"You will."
I grabbed a cushion and threw it at him.
"Stop being right."
He caught it easily.
"I usually am."
"You're annoying."
"I've been told."
I walked past him toward the kitchen.
"I'm getting water."
"You should."
"That wasn't permission."
"I didn't say it was."
I paused.
Then turned slightly.
"…you're still doing that."
"What?"
"Acting like you have a say in everything I do."
He didn't answer immediately.
Then—
"I'm trying not to."
That stopped me.
I turned fully this time.
"You're trying?"
"Yes."
"…that's new."
"I'm learning."
Silence.
Then—
"…good."
I turned back and grabbed a glass of water.
Keifer's POV
She noticed.
Of course she did.
Every little shift.
Every small change.
That's how she is.
Sharp.
Aware.
And tonight—
She didn't push me away.
Not really.
Even when I crossed the line earlier.
Even when I got jealous.
She didn't shut me out.
And that meant something.
Jay-jay's POV
I leaned against the counter, taking a sip of water.
Then—
"I meant what I said earlier."
His voice again.
Closer this time.
I didn't turn immediately.
"…about what?"
"On stage."
I glanced at him.
"…which part?"
"About trust."
I stayed quiet.
He continued.
"I don't expect you to trust me completely yet."
"Good."
"But I'm not going to stop trying."
I exhaled softly.
"You're very persistent."
"Yes."
"…it's annoying."
"I know."
A pause.
Then—
"But it's working."
I looked at him.
"…don't get ahead of yourself."
"I'm not."
"You are."
"I'm not."
"You are."
He stepped closer.
Not too close.
Just enough.
"You didn't pull away tonight."
My breath caught slightly.
"That doesn't mean anything."
"It means something."
"It doesn't."
"It does."
I looked away.
"…you're reading too much into it."
"And you're pretending it doesn't matter."
Silence.
Then—
"…maybe it does."
The words slipped out quietly.
But he heard them.
Of course he did.
The Shift
The space between us felt smaller now.
Not physically.
But something else.
Something harder to define.
"You were jealous," I said softly.
"Yes."
"More than once."
"Yes."
"…why?"
He didn't answer right away.
Then—
"Because I know what it's like to lose you."
That hit.
Again.
Every time.
I looked at him.
"…you didn't lose me."
"I almost did."
Silence.
Then I stepped closer.
This time.
Not him.
Me.
"You're not going to," I said quietly.
He held my gaze.
"You don't know that."
"I do."
"How?"
I tilted my head slightly.
"…because I'm still here."
That was it.
Simple.
Honest.
True.
The Moment
We stood there.
Close.
Too close.
And for once—
Neither of us moved.
No teasing.
No arguments.
No distractions.
Just… this.
Then—
His hand lifted slightly.
Paused.
Like he was giving me time to stop him.
I didn't.
His fingers brushed lightly against mine.
Slow.
Careful.
Like he was testing something fragile.
I didn't pull away.
Instead—
I let my hand stay there.
With his.
And that small moment—
Said more than anything else tonight.
End of Chapter
Not every moment needs words.
Not every feeling needs to be explained.
Sometimes—
It's just a hand reaching out.
And the other choosing not to let go.
And tonight—
For the first time since everything broke—
Jay-jay didn't pull away.
And Keifer didn't push.
They just… stayed.
Together.
In the quiet after the lights faded. ✨
