Chapter 27: The Space Between Us
(Jay-jay's POV)
I didn't go far.
Just the hallway.
Just far enough to breathe.
But not far enough to forget.
Because even when I leaned against the cold wall, closing my eyes for a second—
I could still feel it.
His hand.
At my waist.
The way he didn't rush.
The way he waited.
The way he gave me a choice—
And I didn't stop him.
My heart was still beating too fast.
Not from embarrassment.
Not from the class.
From him.
From everything that had just changed.
"…this is bad," I whispered to myself.
Because it was.
It was supposed to be controlled.
Careful.
Measured.
But it wasn't anymore.
Not with him.
Not ever with him.
Footsteps.
I didn't need to open my eyes.
I already knew.
Of course he followed.
Of course he did.
Keifer Watson never left things unfinished.
Jay-jay: "…I said I needed a moment."
Keifer: "You took one."
I opened my eyes.
He was standing a few steps away.
Not too close this time.
That was new.
Jay-jay: "…you're learning."
Keifer: "I told you I would."
Silence stretched between us.
Not awkward.
Not empty.
Just… full.
Too full.
Jay-jay: "You shouldn't have followed me."
Keifer: "I gave you space."
Jay-jay: "For five seconds."
Keifer: "It felt longer."
I almost smiled.
Almost.
But I stopped myself.
Jay-jay: "…this isn't a joke."
Keifer: "I know."
Jay-jay: "Then stop acting like it is."
Keifer: "I'm not."
He stepped closer.
Slow.
Careful.
Like he was making sure I wouldn't walk away again.
Keifer: "You're overwhelmed."
Jay-jay: "I'm not."
Keifer: "You are."
Jay-jay: "Stop telling me what I feel."
Keifer: "Then tell me."
Silence.
Because—
That was harder.
Way harder.
I looked away.
Jay-jay: "…everything is moving too fast."
Keifer didn't interrupt.
Didn't argue.
Just listened.
Jay-jay: "New York. The engagement. The award show. Coming back here. Them—" I gestured toward the classroom.
"—you."
A pause.
Then quieter—
Jay-jay: "And then that."
His voice softened.
Keifer: "The kiss?"
I swallowed.
Jay-jay: "…yes."
Keifer: "You regret it?"
The question landed heavy.
Too heavy.
I looked at him.
Really looked.
And for the first time—
There was something there I hadn't seen before.
Not confidence.
Not control.
Not teasing.
Something else.
Something… uncertain.
And that changed everything.
Jay-jay: "…no."
His shoulders relaxed slightly.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
Jay-jay: "That's the problem."
Keifer frowned.
Keifer: "Explain."
Jay-jay: "I don't regret it."
Silence.
Jay-jay: "I should."
Keifer: "Why?"
Jay-jay: "Because this is complicated."
Keifer: "It always was."
Jay-jay: "Because you hurt me."
Keifer didn't look away.
Keifer: "I know."
Jay-jay: "Because I'm not ready to just… forget that."
Keifer: "I'm not asking you to."
That stopped me.
Jay-jay: "…you're not?"
Keifer shook his head slowly.
Keifer: "I don't want you to forget."
Jay-jay: "…that's new."
Keifer: "I want you to remember."
Jay-jay: "Why would you want that?"
His voice dropped.
Lower.
Real.
Keifer: "Because if you still choose me after remembering everything…"
A pause.
Keifer: "…then I know it's real."
My breath caught.
That—
That was unfair.
Because it made sense.
Because it felt honest.
Because it made it harder to walk away.
The space between us felt smaller again.
Without either of us moving.
Jay-jay: "…you're not making this easy."
Keifer: "I'm not trying to."
Jay-jay: "You should."
Keifer: "Why?"
Jay-jay: "Because it would be simpler."
Keifer: "I don't want simple."
Jay-jay: "…of course you don't."
Keifer: "I want you."
Silence.
Jay-jay: "…that's not fair."
Keifer: "I never said it was."
I exhaled slowly.
Trying to steady myself.
Jay-jay: "You don't get to just say things like that."
Keifer: "Why not?"
Jay-jay: "Because they matter."
Keifer: "Good."
Jay-jay: "…Keifer."
Keifer: "Jay-jay."
The way he said my name—
Not teasing.
Not dramatic.
Just… soft.
And that—
That was worse than everything else.
He stepped closer.
One step.
Then another.
Slow.
Careful.
Giving me time.
Always giving me time now.
His hand lifted slightly.
Paused.
Like before.
Waiting.
I should've stepped back.
I didn't.
His fingers brushed against my arm first.
Light.
Barely there.
Then slid down—
Until they reached my hand.
He didn't grab it.
Didn't hold it tightly.
Just… touched it.
Like he was asking without words.
I looked down.
Then back at him.
Jay-jay (quiet): "…you're doing that again."
Keifer: "What?"
Jay-jay: "Giving me a choice."
Keifer: "Because it's yours."
Silence.
Then—
I didn't pull away.
His fingers slowly intertwined with mine.
Warm.
Steady.
Certain.
And my heart—
Did that thing again.
That dangerous thing.
Where it forgot everything logical.
Everything careful.
Everything safe.
Keifer stepped closer.
Now there was barely any space left between us.
Keifer (soft): "Still overwhelmed?"
Jay-jay: "…yes."
Keifer: "Do you want me to stop?"
The question hung in the air.
Heavy.
Important.
Final.
I looked at him.
At the way he was waiting.
At the way he wasn't forcing anything.
At the way he was letting me decide.
And that—
That was what broke me.
Jay-jay (whisper): "…no."
That was all it took.
His hand moved—
Gently—
From mine…
To my waist again.
Familiar.
Careful.
Like he remembered exactly how to hold me.
But this time—
I didn't freeze.
I stepped closer.
Closing the distance myself.
And that changed everything.
Keifer's breath caught.
Just for a second.
Keifer: "…you moved first."
Jay-jay: "…don't make it a big deal."
Keifer: "It is a big deal."
Jay-jay: "…it's not."
Keifer: "It is for me."
I looked up at him.
Jay-jay: "…you're dramatic."
Keifer: "Only with you."
His hand tightened slightly at my waist.
Not pulling.
Just holding.
Like he didn't want me to disappear.
Keifer (low): "Say it again."
Jay-jay: "…say what?"
Keifer: "That you don't regret it."
I hesitated.
Then—
Jay-jay: "…I don't regret it."
His eyes softened.
And before I could think—
Before I could overanalyze—
Before I could stop myself—
I leaned in.
This kiss wasn't like the first.
It wasn't hesitant.
It wasn't testing.
It wasn't careful.
It was—
Certain.
Slow.
Deep.
Like we both already knew.
Like we both had already decided.
His hand pulled me closer—
Just slightly.
Enough to feel.
Enough to make it real.
And this time—
There was no noise.
No class.
No chaos.
Just us.
When we pulled apart—
Neither of us moved far.
Still close.
Still breathing the same air.
Still not letting go.
Keifer (soft): "You're making this very hard for me."
Jay-jay (quiet): "…good."
He almost laughed.
Keifer: "Cruel."
Jay-jay: "You deserve it."
Keifer: "Probably."
But he didn't let go.
And neither did I.
From down the hallway—
Faint voices.
Very loud faint voices.
Felix: "WHERE DID THEY GO?!"
Calix: "FIND THEM!"
Mayo: "THEY'RE HAVING A MOMENT!"
Kit: "DON'T INTERRUPT!"
Blaster: "INTERRUPT!"
David: "Do not."
I closed my eyes for a second.
Then looked at him.
Jay-jay: "…we should go back."
Keifer: "We should."
Neither of us moved.
Jay-jay: "…we're not moving."
Keifer: "No."
Jay-jay: "…this is a problem."
Keifer: "Definitely."
A pause.
Then—
Keifer: "Stay for one more second."
I didn't argue.
End of Chapter
Some distances…
Aren't meant to stay.
Some lines…
Aren't meant to hold.
And some moments—
The quiet ones—
The ones no one sees—
Are the ones that change everything.
Because this time—
She didn't pull away.
And he didn't have to ask twice.
And whatever this was between them now—
It wasn't fragile anymore.
It was real.
And it was only getting stronger. ✨
