Chapter 39 - The System Awakens

The corridor was suddenly flooded with red light.

A sharp mechanical voice echoed through the walls.

"Unauthorized access detected."

Emily's heart began to race.

Her breathing became uneven as she looked around.

"They know we're here..." she whispered.

Alexander's expression turned cold and focused.

"They've always known."

Before she could respond -

A loud metallic sound echoed.

One door slammed shut.

Then another.

And another.

Each exit closing one after the other.

Blocking every possible way out.

Emily's chest tightened.

"They're locking us in!"

Alexander grabbed her hand firmly.

"Stay close to me."

His voice was calm, but his grip was tense.

---

The guards quickly moved into position.

"Sir, we're losing access to the main system!"

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"This isn't random."

A pause.

"This place is responding to us."

Suddenly -

The floor beneath them vibrated slightly.

A low hum filled the air.

Emily felt it.

That strange feeling again.

Like someone was watching her.

Not from outside.

But from within the system itself.

---

At the far end of the corridor -

A large screen flickered to life.

Everyone froze.

A figure appeared.

Blurry.

Distorted.

Unclear.

But definitely there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emily's breath caught in her throat.

"Who is that...?"

The figure tilted its head slowly.

Almost like it was studying her.

Recognizing her.

Then -

A voice came through.

Calm.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

"Welcome back, Emily."

Her entire body went cold.

Because those words -

Did not sound like a mistake.

They sounded like the truth.

---

Alexander stepped forward, his gaze sharp.

"Who are you?"

The figure did not answer.

It simply watched.

Then the screen glitched.

For a split second -

The image became clear.

And in that moment -

Emily saw something that made her blood run cold.

Because the face on the screen...

Looked like someone she should have remembered.

But could not.

---

The screen went black.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Emily's hands trembled.

"Alexander..."

Her voice shook.

"I do not think this is just about being watched anymore."

He did not respond immediately.

Because deep down -

He already knew.

This was not surveillance.

---

This was control.

And Emily...

Was at the center of it.
