Chapter 7 - Short Circuited

[Main Phase 2]

"I set down one card and end my turn!"

[Card Set face-down in Yuta's First Spell/Trap Zone]

[End Phase]

[Turn 3]

[Lukas Edison's Turn]

[Draw Phase]

"Draw!"

He draws two cards from his Deck due to the effect of 'Time-Tearing Morganite' he used last turn. It'd be unfair, since one more card means being ahead in momentum. However, I managed to use the same card through 'Mimicat'.

Essentially, he has only achieved speeding up the game rhythm. Is that good? Yes, my Toon Deck needs one extra turn to start attacking. His Deck is so aggressive that I'm naturally at a disadvantage from the start.

It's fine, I'll make it work.

"Yuta! This is how you lose, I activate the face-down Spell Card on my field: 'Short Circuit'! While I control 3 or more Batteryman Monsters, I can activate this card to destroy every card you control!"

Ah shit. I guess I might not be able to make it work. I sigh.

"Chain! I activate my 'Toon Bookmark' in my Graveyard. By banishing that card, I can prevent 'Toon World' from being destroyed!

"What about your other two cards in the field?"

"Gone. Nothing I can do about it."

"Heh, great."

['Short Circuit', Spell Card]

[Activate only if you control 3 or more "Batteryman" monsters. Destroy all cards your opponent controls.]

['Toon Bookmark', Spell Card]

[If a "Toon World(s)" you control would be destroyed by card effect, you can banish this card from your GY instead.]

I fucked up. I had a card in my Deck Extra that could've destroyed all of his monsters. Yet, I decided to go for my Ace. I thought I learned from my previous Duel that I shouldn't just think about what card has a higher ATK. I still have a lot to learn.

Regardless, my lamentations won't change the fact that I see my whole field shatter in front of my very eyes. All but a single card. 'Toon World', which is the only one I could protect from being destroyed. All that power, found in the trash?

I guess even some trash is stronger than the rest. Out of spite, I try to 'remember' how many copies of 'Short Circuit' Lukas has in his Deck.

It costs me a slight headache, but the information quickly resurfaces in my mind. Three copies. I'm such a fool, I should've checked his trap and spell cards first. If I had, I could've played expecting Short Circuit. I would have saved my trap card 'Toon Briefcase' for later and XYZ Summoned 'Wonky Quartet' instead.

Dammit, that's meaningless. I need to focus on the duel for whatever is coming up. I really need to stop zoning out mid-way through. Just like during The Emperor's Duel, I missed out on the start of his next combo. I'll have to listen to the narration from the Duel Disk Narrator.

['Batteryman AAA', Normal Summoned in face-up Attack Position in Lukas' Second Monster Zone]

['Lightray Grepher', Normal Summoned in face-up Attack Position in Lukas' Fifth Monster Zone]

['Batteryman AAA', Light Monster]

[Level 4/Thunder/Effect]

[0 ATK, 0 DEF]

['Lightray Grepher', Light Monster]

[Level 4/Warrior/Effect]

[1700 ATK, 1600 DEF]

Okay, so he only Normal Summoned two monsters. Good, I didn't miss much stuff. He still cannot deal enough damage to take me off. Those monsters are not that strong, I'll certainly be able to turn it around next turn.

"I Overlay 'Batteryman AAA' and 'Lightray Grepher' to XYZ Summon 'Starliege Paladynamo'!"

My bad, shouldn't have expected him not to have XYZ Monsters

['Starliege Paladynamo', XYZ Summoned in Attack Position in the Right Extra Monster Zone]

['Starliege Paladynamo', Light Monster]

[Rank 4/Warrior/XYZ/Effect]

[2000 ATK, 1000 DEF]

"Trash monster, too?"

"Not really."

"You're a fake trash duelist!"

He laughs as I scold him for not only using cards he found in the trash. Like, come on! He has so many op cards... It's unfair.

"I enter the Battle Phase, get ready!"

"Bring it on, it's not enough!"

He laughs, with that almost thunderous laugh. It's intense. He thinks he has won already. Dreaming about that 'Employee of the Month' title, huh? Keep dreaming. I ain't gonna lose two duels back to back!

[Battle Phase]

"I Direct Attack you with 'Batteryman Charger', 'Batteryman AA', and 'Starliege Paladynamo'! Fry Yuta, my Light monsters!"

I raise my arms to shield my face out of instinct; it's probably a reflex from my previous Duel. Since in that one, I actually took physical damage. I decide to pretend that the attacks hitting me actually hurt; that's what everyone does. It is part of the fun of playing Duel Monsters, ain't it?

"Ahhh!"

[Yuta's LP: 7000 --> 4300 --> 3300 --> 1300]

"Yuta! You got this one turn to turn the tables. I end my turn, show me what you've got!"

"Heh... bet!"

[End Phase]

[Turn 4]

[Yoshiro Yuta's Turn]

[Draw Phase]

Whether I win or lose will be decided with this draw phase. Normally, I wouldn't trust getting an opportunity here, but the fact that I can draw 2 cards per turn gives me a little bit of hope. Come on, don't screw me over!

"Draw!"

I grab the two cards mid air, gotta aura farm a little if I'm gonna win this. I check them, 'Comic Hand' and 'Toon Table of Contents'

I see, I could use 'Comic Hand' to take control of one of his monsters. What does 'Starliege Paladynamo' even do? Right, a headache follows my question, accompanied by all of its information, making its way into my mind.

It can transform one monster's Attack into 0 and negate its effects. That could be the key to turning around the Duel. But it won't be enough, I need something else...

I look at my 'Toon Table of Contents', I could've gotten a better card from this draw... Like the 'Solemn Judgment' I added to my deck before the fight. Okay, I guess the best I can do is deal some more damage to my opponent. Got it, I'll do that combo again.

[Main Phase]

"You got a good draw?"

"Not the best one, to be honest."

"Ho-ho, willing to surrender, then?"

I chuckle, surrender? Hell no.

"It's good enough."

"I activate my Spell Card 'Toon Table of Contents', which allows me to Search and Add 'Toon Bookmark' from my Deck to my Hand. Then, I activate 'Toon Bookmark' to Add and Search 'Shadow Toon' to my Hand from my Deck."

['Toon Table of Contents', Spell Card]

[Add 1 "Toon" card from your Deck to your hand.]

['Toon Bookmark', Spell Card]

[Add 1 "Toon World", or 1 card that mentions it, from your Deck to your hand, except "Toon Bookmark".]

"So you want to make sure you have 'Toon Bookmark' in your Graveyard, so you can banish it to protect your 'Toon World' from being destroyed. Sadly, that won't help you."

"How so?"

"Your Deck is obviously incomplete. I'm sure there's a card, or multiple cards, that would make it better. It is... too slow."

I nod. He's right, even though my Toon Monsters can Direct Attack, I need them to survive one whole turn since they cannot attack the turn they're summoned. However, for them to be able to attack, I need them to survive one turn.

The truth is that most of the time, they can't survive that one Turn... Which sucks. What even is the piece that my deck is missing, though?

"Yeah, my Deck is shit. That's why my key to victory is your Deck!"

"Huh!?"

"I activate the Spell Card 'Comic Hand', which allows me to take control of your 'Starliege Paladynamo'!"

"No way!"

"Hah, yes way!"

['Comic Hand', Spell Card]

[If you control "Toon World", equip to an opponent's monster. Take control of it. It is treated as a Toon monster.]

['Starliege Paladynamo', Moved to Yuta's Third Monster Zone]

"I activate 'Shadow Toon', my Spell Card. It allows me to deal 2700 Damage to you, your 'Batteryman Charger''s ATK!"

"Nghh!!"

[Lukas' LP: 6500 --> 3800]

"Now, by detaching 2 cards from 'Starliege Paladynamo', I reduce your 'Batteryman Charger''s Attack to 0 and negate its effects!"

"Come on! Let me breathe!" He laughs

['Starliege Paladynamo', Light Monster]

[Once per turn: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change its ATK to 0, and if you do, it has its effects negated.]

"I start my Battle Phase."

[Battle Phase]

"Now, I attack your 'Batteryman Charger' with 'Starliege Paladynamo'. Let's cut through one more battery!"

His battery immediately shatters into tiny fragments at the tiniest contact from the blade, which cuts through the battery without resistance and slashes right at Lukas' chest. It's a hologram, but Lukas plays along.

"You bastard, ahhh!" He doesn't act that well. I can see him almost burst into laughter.

[Lukas' LP: 3800 --> 1800]

He's probably excited, and so am I. One more turn, it's all I need. Just survive one more turn...

"I end my turn."

[End Phase]

"You're losing your Employee of the Month title, kiddo!"
