Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Chase Through Ironvale

The alley behind the Ironvale Textile Factory was dark and narrow, lit only by a few weak lanterns hanging from the brick walls. Smoke from the nearby chimneys drifted through the night air, making the city feel suffocating.

Isla Whitmore had barely stepped out of the tunnel when the shouting began behind her.

"STOP THEM!" a guard yelled.

Her heart jumped into her throat.

Liam grabbed her arm. "Run!"

They rushed down the alley, their footsteps echoing against the wet stones. Behind them, several guards burst out of the tunnel entrance, their lanterns swinging wildly as they chased them.

"Don't let them escape!" another voice shouted.

Isla's lungs burned as she ran. The long hours in the factory had left her body weak, but fear pushed her forward.

"This way!" Liam said, pulling her toward a narrow side street.

They turned the corner just as one of the guards reached the end of the alley.

"There they are!"

The sound of boots pounding against the ground grew louder.

From the rooftop across the street, Ethan Hale saw everything unfold.

When he saw Isla running from the tunnel, his heart nearly stopped. After all these years of searching, she was finally there—only a few streets away.

But the guards were already chasing her.

Without hesitation, Ethan jumped down from the roof, landing behind a pile of crates in the shadows.

"Hold on, Isla," he whispered. "I'm coming."

He slipped into the street, moving quickly but carefully, keeping to the darker paths between the buildings.

The streets of Ironvale were like a maze. Workers' houses, storage warehouses, and narrow alleys twisted through the industrial district.

But Ethan had spent hours studying the area. He knew some of the shortcuts.

Isla and Liam continued running until they reached a small marketplace. At night, the stalls were empty, their wooden tables covered with cloth.

Liam stopped suddenly.

"We can hide here," he said.

But before they could move, two guards appeared at the end of the street.

"Over there!"

Isla's heart sank.

They were surrounded.

Just as the guards began moving toward them, a sudden noise echoed from the other side of the market.

A wooden cart crashed loudly into a stack of barrels.

The guards turned.

"What was that?" one of them muttered.

From the shadows, Ethan watched the distraction he had just created.

"Now," he whispered.

Isla saw the guards looking away and quickly pulled Liam behind one of the stalls.

The guards walked toward the noise, their lanterns lighting up the broken barrels and spilled crates.

One of them frowned.

"There's no one here…"

Meanwhile, Ethan quietly approached the stall where Isla was hiding.

For a moment, he simply looked at her.

She looked older now. Stronger. But he would recognize her anywhere.

"Isla," he said softly.

She turned.

For a second, she froze.

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Ethan…?"

Liam looked confused. "You know him?"

But before Isla could answer, a whistle cut through the air.

One of the guards had returned.

"THEY'RE HERE!" he shouted.

The entire street erupted into chaos.

Lantern lights swung wildly as more guards rushed into the market.

Ethan grabbed Isla's hand.

"We have to move. Now!"

They ran together through the narrow streets, Liam following close behind.

Behind them, the guards continued shouting.

"Block the north road!"

"Don't let them reach the river!"

The chase through Ironvale had only just begun.

After several minutes of running, Ethan led them into an abandoned warehouse near the edge of the district.

They slipped inside and hid behind stacks of old crates.

Outside, the guards' voices slowly faded.

For the first time that night, everything was quiet.

Isla looked at Ethan, still trying to believe what she was seeing.

"You came," she whispered.

Ethan nodded.

"I promised I would find you."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Years of separation, fear, and hope hung between them.

But the danger was far from over.

Ironvale was still full of guards, and the factory owners would not allow their workers to escape so easily.

Ethan looked toward the dark streets outside the warehouse.

"This city is bigger than I thought," he said. "And more dangerous."

Isla nodded slowly.

"But at least now… we're not alone."

Far away, in the tall office of the textile factory, Victor Grayson stood by a window overlooking the city.

A guard rushed into the room.

"Sir," he said breathlessly. "Two workers escaped through the tunnels."

Grayson's eyes narrowed.

"Send more men," he said coldly. "Search the entire district."

He turned back toward the smoky skyline of Ironvale.

"No one escapes my factory."

The hunt had begun.
