The abandoned warehouse smelled of dust, old wood, and rusted iron. Moonlight slipped through broken windows, drawing pale lines across the floor.
Isla Whitmore sat on a wooden crate, still trying to calm her breathing after the long chase. Her hands trembled slightly.
Across from her, Ethan Hale kept watch near the entrance. Every few seconds he glanced outside to make sure no guards were nearby.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
It had been years since they last saw each other. Years filled with war, loss, and uncertainty.
Finally, Isla broke the silence.
"I thought I would never see you again," she said quietly.
Ethan turned toward her.
"I never stopped searching," he replied.
His voice was calm, but inside his chest his heart was still racing.
He had crossed forests, villages, and dangerous roads to reach Ironvale. And now that he had finally found her, he realized escaping the city might be even harder than finding her.
Liam leaned against a crate nearby, listening curiously.
"So… you two know each other?" the boy asked.
Isla nodded.
"We grew up in the same village," she said softly. "Before the war."
Liam looked between them.
"Well… that explains why he jumped into a city full of guards to save you."
Ethan gave a faint smile, but it quickly faded.
"We can't stay here long," he said. "The guards will search every building in this district."
Almost as if his words summoned the danger, distant whistles echoed through the streets.
Guards.
They were already spreading through the city.
Outside, Ironvale was waking to a different kind of night.
Lanterns moved through the streets as patrols searched every corner. Groups of guards knocked on doors, checked warehouses, and questioned workers.
At the center of the operation stood Captain Roland Vance, the man responsible for security in the industrial district.
He was tall, with sharp gray eyes and a scar running across his jaw.
"Two workers escaped," one of the soldiers reported.
"Children?" Roland asked.
"One boy… one girl."
Roland frowned slightly.
"That doesn't concern me," he said.
But then the guard added something.
"There might be a third person involved… someone from outside the city."
Roland's eyes narrowed.
"An outsider?" he repeated.
That changed everything.
"No outsider walks through Ironvale unnoticed," Roland said coldly. "Find him."
The hunt had become far more serious.
Back in the warehouse, Ethan finished examining the small map he had drawn earlier.
"There's a river on the north side of the city," he explained quietly. "If we reach it, we might find boats or fishermen who can take us away from here."
Liam tilted his head.
"That's half the city away," he said. "And the guards are everywhere tonight."
Isla looked toward the broken window.
The streets outside were dark, but she could see lanterns moving in the distance.
"They're searching," she whispered.
Ethan nodded.
"Which means we move carefully."
He stood up and checked the small knife at his belt.
"We'll leave in a few minutes."
Liam looked nervous.
"What if they catch us?"
Ethan's voice remained steady.
"Then we make sure they regret it."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Heavy boots approaching the warehouse.
All three of them froze.
The footsteps stopped just outside the door.
A lantern glow appeared beneath the cracks in the wood.
A guard's voice spoke outside.
"This place hasn't been checked yet."
Another guard answered.
"Open it."
Inside, Ethan's mind raced.
If the door opened, they would be discovered instantly.
He looked around the warehouse quickly.
Then he spotted a broken ladder leading to a wooden loft above.
"Up there," he whispered.
Isla and Liam climbed the ladder as quietly as possible.
Ethan followed last, pulling the ladder slightly upward so it was harder to see from below.
The door creaked open.
Two guards entered.
Their lantern light swept across the dusty warehouse floor.
One of them kicked a loose crate.
"Looks empty."
The other guard walked further inside, raising his lantern higher.
For a terrifying moment, the light moved dangerously close to the loft above.
Isla held her breath.
If he looked up—
But suddenly, a whistle sounded from the street.
"ROLAND NEEDS EVERYONE AT THE CROSSROAD!" someone shouted.
The guards groaned.
"Forget this place," one of them said.
They quickly left the warehouse.
The door slammed shut again.
For several seconds, Ethan, Isla, and Liam stayed perfectly still.
Finally Liam whispered:
"That was too close."
Ethan slowly lowered the ladder again.
"Which means we don't have much time."
Outside, the city of Ironvale continued to search.
And somewhere in the streets, Captain Roland Vance was already beginning to suspect that something bigger than a simple escape was happening.
