Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Moment We Stopped Pretending

Some feelings can be ignored.

Some can be delayed.

But some… refuse to stay hidden forever.

The next few days felt lighter.

Not because everything was perfect.

But because nothing was being avoided anymore.

Meera noticed it in the way she no longer hesitated before going to the library.

In the way conversations didn't feel forced.

In the way silence no longer meant distance.

It meant comfort.

And that scared her—

Just a little.

Because comfort meant something real.

And real things…

Had the power to change everything.

That afternoon, the library was quieter than usual.

Sunlight filtered through the windows, falling softly across their table.

Meera sat across from Aarav, her notebook open but untouched.

There wasn't much left to do.

And for once—

Neither of them was pretending there was.

"You're not working," Aarav said.

"You're not either."

"That's different."

"It's not."

Aarav smiled slightly.

"Fair."

A small silence settled between them.

But this time—

It felt easy.

Not heavy.

Not uncertain.

Just… there.

Meera tapped her pen lightly against the table.

Then stopped.

Then said—

"This feels strange."

Aarav looked at her.

"What does?"

"This."

She gestured vaguely between them.

"No project. No deadlines. No reason to sit here."

Aarav leaned back slightly.

"And yet… you're still here."

Meera didn't reply immediately.

Because he was right.

She was.

Not because she had to.

But because she wanted to.

And that realization made her pause.

"I guess I am," she said quietly.

Aarav watched her for a moment.

Then asked—

"Why?"

The question wasn't teasing.

It wasn't casual.

It was real.

And it deserved a real answer.

Meera looked down at her hands.

Then back at him.

"I don't know."

Aarav didn't look convinced.

"You do."

Meera exhaled softly.

Maybe she did.

Maybe she had known for a while.

She just hadn't said it.

Hadn't allowed herself to say it.

Because saying it would make it real.

And once it was real—

There was no going back.

"Why do you keep asking questions you already know the answer to?" she said instead.

Aarav held her gaze.

"Because I want to hear you say it."

The words were quiet.

But steady.

And they stayed.

Right there.

Between them.

Meera's heartbeat shifted.

Not fast.

Not nervous.

Just… aware.

"You're making this complicated," she said.

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm just asking you to be honest."

Meera looked away.

Because honesty was exactly what she had been avoiding.

For weeks.

Maybe longer.

"Why does it matter so much?" she asked quietly.

Aarav didn't hesitate this time.

"Because you matter."

The words landed differently.

Not like before.

Not like a confession meant to be avoided.

But like a truth that had been there all along.

Simple.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

Meera looked at him.

And for the first time—

She didn't feel like stepping back.

Didn't feel like denying it.

Didn't feel like pretending.

She just… stayed.

"That's not fair," she said softly.

Aarav frowned slightly.

"What isn't?"

"You saying things like that."

"Why?"

"Because…" she paused. "Because I don't know how to respond."

Aarav's expression softened.

"You don't have to respond perfectly."

"That's not how it works for me."

"I know."

That answer caught her off guard.

Because he did know.

He always did.

And that made it harder to hide.

Harder to avoid.

Harder to pretend.

"Then why are you still asking?" she said.

Aarav leaned forward slightly.

"Because you're still holding back."

Meera's fingers tightened slightly around her pen.

He wasn't wrong.

She was.

Not because she didn't feel anything.

But because she felt too much.

And that was the problem.

"I don't like not being in control," she admitted.

Her voice was quiet.

But honest.

Aarav nodded.

"I know."

"And this—" she gestured between them again, "—this isn't something I can control."

Aarav's gaze didn't waver.

"No, it's not."

Meera looked at him.

"Doesn't that bother you?"

Aarav shook his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because not everything has to be controlled."

Meera let out a small breath.

"You make it sound easy."

"It's not easy," Aarav said. "I just don't think it's something to be afraid of."

Meera was quiet for a moment.

Then she asked—

"What if it changes everything?"

Aarav held her gaze.

"Maybe it's supposed to."

The simplicity of that answer made it harder to argue.

Because deep down—

She knew he was right.

Things had already changed.

She had changed.

And pretending otherwise wasn't working anymore.

Silence settled between them.

But this time—

It wasn't avoidance.

It was decision.

Slow.

Careful.

But real.

Meera looked down.

Then back at him.

And for the first time—

She didn't hold back.

"I don't just see you as a rival anymore."

The words came out softly.

But clearly.

Aarav didn't interrupt.

Didn't react immediately.

He just listened.

And that made it easier.

"You're…" she paused. "You're important to me."

There it was.

Simple.

Honest.

Real.

Aarav's expression changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough to show that it mattered.

"That's all I needed to hear," he said quietly.

Meera let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

She almost smiled.

"You're impossible."

"I've heard that before."

This time—

She actually smiled.

Small.

But real.

And she didn't hide it.

They sat there for a moment.

Not saying anything.

But not needing to either.

Because something had shifted.

Not uncertain.

Not fragile.

But steady.

Clear.

And finally—

Honest.

As they walked out of the library that evening, the air felt different.

Or maybe it was just them.

They walked side by side.

Naturally.

Without thinking about it.

Without questioning it.

And for once—

There was no distance.

Not even a little.

Because somewhere between rivalry and silence…

Between confusion and honesty…

They had stopped pretending.

And that changed everything.
