Chapter 21 - Chapter 20: The Beginning We Chose

Some stories begin with chance.

Some begin with conflict.

And some… begin when two people finally stop holding back.

The next few days felt different.

Not in a loud, obvious way.

Nothing dramatic had changed. The same classes, the same campus, the same routines continued exactly as before.

And yet—

Everything felt… lighter.

Meera noticed it in the way she woke up without immediately thinking about what needed to be done. For the first time in a long while, her thoughts weren't racing ahead of her.

They were calm.

Still.

And that felt unfamiliar.

But not uncomfortable.

When she walked into the library that afternoon, she didn't pause at the entrance like she used to. There was no hesitation, no second-guessing.

Her eyes found Aarav instantly.

And this time—

She didn't question why.

"You're early," he said, glancing up from his book.

"So are you."

"That's normal for me."

"Not for me."

Aarav smiled faintly.

"I noticed."

Meera sat down across from him, placing her bag beside her. There were no books spread out, no urgent notes, no deadlines pushing them forward.

For the first time—

They had nothing they had to do.

And yet—

They were still here.

Together.

"You're smiling again," Aarav said after a moment.

"I'm not."

"You are."

Meera rolled her eyes lightly.

"I'm just… not stressed."

"That's new."

"Don't get used to it."

"I won't," he said, though the smile on his face suggested otherwise.

A quiet silence settled between them.

But it wasn't the kind they used to fill with arguments or distractions.

It was comfortable.

Easy.

The kind that didn't demand anything.

"You know," Aarav said, leaning back slightly, "we almost messed this up."

Meera exhaled slowly.

"I know."

"And yet…"

"We didn't," she finished.

Their eyes met briefly.

And in that moment—

Everything they had been through felt real again.

The misunderstandings.

The silence.

The almost-breaking point.

And the way they had come back from it.

Slowly.

Carefully.

But together.

"I think the hardest part wasn't understanding what I felt," Meera said after a moment.

Aarav tilted his head slightly.

"Then what was?"

She looked at him.

"Admitting it."

Aarav nodded.

"Yeah."

Another silence followed.

But this one felt meaningful.

Like something important had been acknowledged.

"And now?" he asked.

Meera thought for a second.

Then—

"It feels easy."

Aarav smiled.

"That's because it's real."

The simplicity of his answer made her pause.

Because he wasn't wrong.

There was no confusion anymore.

No overthinking.

No fear of what this was.

It just… was.

Later, they walked out of the library together.

Not because they planned to.

But because neither of them left first.

The campus was quieter in the evening, the sunlight fading into softer shades.

"You've changed," Aarav said.

"So have you."

"Better?"

Meera smiled slightly.

"Better."

They walked side by side, their pace naturally matching.

No rush.

No distance.

Just presence.

"You know what's strange?" Meera said.

"What?"

"I used to think everything had to be planned."

Aarav glanced at her.

"And now?"

She looked ahead.

"Now I think the best things happen when they're not."

Aarav nodded.

"Yeah."

They stopped near the gate.

The same place where so many moments had once felt uncertain.

But now—

It felt steady.

Familiar.

Safe.

"I'm glad it was you," Meera said quietly.

Aarav looked at her.

"For what?"

"For everything."

Aarav's expression softened.

"Me too."

They stood there for a moment.

Not saying anything.

Not needing to.

Because everything that mattered—

Had already been said.

And for the first time—

Nothing felt unfinished.

Because this wasn't confusion anymore.

It wasn't hesitation.

It wasn't fear.

It was a beginning.

The one they had finally chosen.
