Chapter 22 - Chapter 21: The Future We Didn’t Plan

Some things are planned.

Some are expected.

But some… become the best parts of our lives simply because we never saw them coming.

A week passed.

Life slowly returned to its usual rhythm.

Classes resumed.

Assignments piled up.

Schedules filled with deadlines again.

But something remained different.

Something steady.

Something real.

Them.

Meera sat in class, her notebook open in front of her, but her attention wasn't fully on the lecture.

Her eyes drifted to the empty seat beside her.

She frowned slightly.

He's late.

That wasn't normal.

A few minutes later, Aarav walked in, slightly out of breath but still composed.

"You're late," Meera said as he sat down.

"I'm on time."

"You're not."

"I'm close enough."

Meera shook her head.

"You're never late."

Aarav glanced at her.

"You noticed."

Meera looked away.

"I just saw."

Aarav smiled slightly.

"Same thing."

After class, they walked out together.

"You have anything after this?" Aarav asked.

"No."

"Good."

"Why?"

Aarav shrugged.

"Let's go somewhere."

Meera raised an eyebrow.

"That's not a plan."

"It works."

She hesitated for a second.

Then nodded.

"Fine."

They walked outside the campus.

Not far.

Just enough to feel like a break from routine.

A small café stood near the corner.

Quiet.

Simple.

Different.

"This is your big plan?" Meera asked.

Aarav nodded.

"Yeah."

Meera looked around.

Then sat down.

"It's not bad."

"I know."

They ordered coffee.

Nothing special.

But the moment felt different.

Because it wasn't about work.

It wasn't about competition.

It was just… time.

"You've never done this before, have you?" Aarav asked.

Meera shook her head.

"Not really."

"Why?"

"I never had time."

Aarav looked at her.

"And now?"

Meera paused.

Then said—

"Now I think I can make time."

Aarav didn't respond immediately.

But the way he looked at her—

It said enough.

"You've changed," he said.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

Meera smiled slightly.

"Maybe I just realized something."

"What?"

"That not everything important is planned."

Aarav nodded.

"Yeah."

Meera leaned back slightly.

"I spent so much time trying to control everything."

"And now?"

She smiled softly.

"Now I think some of the best things happen when you don't."

Aarav smiled too.

"That sounds like progress."

"It is."

Silence followed.

But it wasn't empty.

It was peaceful.

Comfortable.

Real.

"Do you ever think about the future?" Meera asked.

"Sometimes."

"And?"

Aarav looked at her.

"I don't think it needs to be figured out all at once."

Meera nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Then—

after a brief pause—

"I think I want you in it."

The words were quiet.

But certain.

Aarav didn't look surprised.

He just smiled.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Meera rolled her eyes lightly.

"Of course you were."

They stepped out of the café as the sky turned darker.

Lights flickered on.

The world slowed down.

They walked back toward campus.

Side by side.

Naturally.

"You know," Meera said, "this wasn't part of my plan."

Aarav smiled.

"Mine neither."

"And yet…"

"It turned out better," he said.

Meera nodded.

"Yeah."

Because sometimes—

The best parts of life aren't the ones we plan.

They're the ones that happen when we stop trying to control everything.

And for the first time—

Meera wasn't planning what came next.

She was just…

choosing it.

One moment at a time.
